So for a 1/10 of the cost of the war we get nationwide fiber optics which would improve infrastructure and create new business opportunities and benefit most citizens. Essentially for what the war is likely to cost we could have solar panels on every home in the US, allowing us to shut down some coal plants rather than build more and have fiber optic cables to most homes providing high speed internet and HiDef video. If we put the better than a trillion dollars the war is running into replacing the oil and improving infrastructure we wouldn't need Iraqi oil. Nothing will get better in this country until people get angry but apparently they aren't all that upset since all the front runners are talking more of the same. Time to swim back to Europe. Might have seemed like a good idea 500 years ago when my ancestors came over but it's looking like a bad idea now.

The most we can hope for is being able to more easily turn off unwanted features or if we are really lucky they'll be turned off by default. I don't see security changing much. A lot of the problems seem pretty entrenched into the OS. I'm guessing they'll spit out a less offensive version then try to address most of it in the following release. Given the development cycle on this dog I wouldn't hold my breath on any major fix any time soon. Most people will grin and bear it. We've all seen slow downs from one release to the next but this seems more bloat related than any of the past issues. Some were trying to support next gen processors or needing more horsepower but this feels like a bloat issue. A faster processor may not be a real fix. They may have cut loose DOS but there's still a lot of old support in Windows which is good and bad. I don't want more bells and whistles personally I want both 32 bit and 64 bit support like Mac has, better memory management, and to handle a realistic amount of ram. More than anything I want stable and I'd like to get back to NT stability where if a software happened to crash you didn't have to reboot and at times hard boot. I had to hard boot NT 351 once the whole time I used it. Rebooting is common on my Win 2000 and XP machines. Stable, faster, 32/64 bit support and maybe support 32 gig of ram or more. Is that too much to ask for?

The point of the title was the spring was silent because it was dead. Ecosystems are extremely complex and if you'd been paying attention you'd notice we're batting zero at engineering ecosystems to our liking. So far most efforts have been a sledgehammer approach to beating nature into submission. The problem is it took nature far longer to establish ecosystems than we've been out of the trees and we aren't as bright as you give us credit for being. Ecosystems are incredibly resilient houses of cards. They can take a lot of abuse but what happens when you start yanking cards out of the house? The ecosystem can actually survive without us but we can't survive without it. Chernobyl had one amazing benefit, it removed humans from an area and inspite of the contamination which was bad enough to kill trees the area started to recover. Put that into perspective. The worst nuclear accident in history harmed wildlife less than humans simply living in an area. Now you say hell kill all the mosquitoes and lets DDT insects into oblivion. 411, bees are insects and our civilization depends on them. Why we'll hand polinate the plants, how about $10 apples and tomatoes? Like your hamburger? Most of the cattle feed requires polination. We tried using poisons like a monkey with a minigun and it caused damage than we'll be dealing with for generations, animals in the arctic still have DDT levels and so do we. Irresponsible use of pesticides will cause far more deaths than all the mosquito born illnesses combined. Dengue is a tropical disease and guess what happens when you live in the tropics? You get tropical diseases. Better to attack the disease directly than to kill off all the carriers. Bats eat mosquitoes as well as other insects but if you poison the mosquitoes you'll likely kill the bats then you'll be bitching about the other insects. Ever hear of Rattlesnake Round Ups? I'm guessing you think it's a cool idea. Every time they have one rat and mice populations explode. Guess what rats and mice carry? Diseases. Mice Carry Hanta Virus which is a lot like Dengue. Wiping out species won't fix anything but it will cause disasters that will cost lives.

The most cutting edge isn't always the most practical. Do we wait for warp technology for space flight or use chemical rockets to get the ball rolling? The Space Ship 2 is the Model T of space flight. That's not an insult it's a major compliment. The Model T was one of the most successful cars in history for good reason. This craft puts space flight not into the hands of the average person but potentially into the hands of large numbers of people. Henry Ford would give it a big thumbs up and we should all view it as the stepping stone it is.

I'm a Mac fan but 8% of the market hasn't hit flocking yet. Granted if they maintained their percentile increases for a few more years they'd pass Microsoft. That can't happen for a lot of reasons but they are likely to settle into a 15% market share eventually which would be impressive. They really aren't competing head to head since computers are like political parties and religions. Some people are independents or agnostics and float between but for the bulk of the people using computers there isn't a choice they'll either buy a PC or for a few a Mac. Linux is mostly on the geek side still. So long as most of the software and in some cases devices are PC only then Mac is going to have a tough time breaking 15% market share. It's like electric cars with a 100 mile range. For 99% of most people's driving it'd be superior to gasoline, cheaper and and more convenient, plug in at home. Still people make their decisions based on the 1% "what if". Mac will do 99% of what I need and is easier, more stable and more secure, but what if...... It's more breaking a cycle to get people to try Mac or Linux. Linux for all of it's benefits still has some rough edges that keep it more in the tinkerer realm but Mac is more turn key than PCs so it'd actually be better for 90% of the users but branding is a powerful thing and Microsoft has the monopoly and if everyone has one it must be better.

Expect an ocean of knock offs trying to mimic the style but mostly succeeding in giving you seasickness. The whole movie rides the edge of annoying but as I say when it's good it's amazing and very effective. Go with some one else and have them save your seat while you go for popcorn and avoid the first part. It's not as bad as the hour from hell at the beginning of King Kong before anything happens but I definitely would have cut back on the endless party scene.

I save them a bundle on distribution just to pay brick and mortar prices? Now the HD has me more interested. I've got a wide screen Mac so if I can watch HD movies on it for $5 I'll do that. I'll happily pay $10 if they start making them available on opening day of the theatrical release then drop them back to $5 after it's theater run. I'll pay for quality but I'm not paying $4 for heavily compressed video that I have 24 hours to watch once I start it.

The trend is to cripple them so videos can't play on computers. I've found Disney started doing this with DVDs and most Blu-Ray disks don't seem to play on computer drives. I live in my home office and the room is full of hardware but I don't have a DVD player in the room so I normally play them in one of my computers, the Mac mostly because it's wide screen and often available. If I can't play videos on my machines I won't buy or rent them period. I had planned to buy a stack of Blu-Ray disks but since it's a crap shoot if they'll play on my drive I'm not buying any. Bricking the disks so they can't be played is costing them sales. It definitely cost them a bundle with me because I've been wanting to get into a HiDef format and I have a brand new Blu-Ray drive and a nice big 24" screen that can play at 1080P res but the catch-22 is the disks won't play. I used to be a fanatic over Laser disk and I still prefer them to DVDs so I was hoping Blu-Ray or HD would be the next format to dive into. I currently have no plans to buy a dedicated player for either format so they definitely shot themselves in the foot with one customer. I don't care if they block copying but to block playing entirely is insane.
