I can't for the life of me understand why anything in the picture you've linked as "fscked up beyond hope" is difficult to navigate.

Sure, now that I know what to expect, it's not a problem. But those roundabouts are the exits from a major highway, traveled by visitors from out of town and out of state. So you can just imagine the confusion when these first timers encounter this when coming off the highway.

  2. Re:Really bad idea. on Roundabout Revolution Sweeping US · · Score: 4, Funny

Here in Michigan, we're starting to replace stop sign/lights intersections with roundabouts, and on the whole, I really like them... when done right.

But as always, leave it to the US govt to take a good idea and f*** it up beyond hope. I couldn't find a picture of the traffic sign approaching these roundabouts but it's even more confusing than the picture.

The first time I went through this roundabout, I couldn't read the sign fast enough to really tell where to go and basically dove into the first roundabout in almost blind panic. Luckily it was late at night and there were no other cars, but I can only imagine the mass confusion at high traffic.

  3. Re:The problem with Google ... they aren't innovat on Google's Six-Front War · · Score: 1

The biggest problem with Google is that they are not innovators ... just copycats.

To that, I and millions of others say... who cares? Why is copying or buying a concept such a bad thing? As long as they offer a service that is superior, why does it matter who came up with the original concept? Where would the GUI desktop be now if Apple hadn't "innovated" it from Xerox?

That's just the nature of competition and the free market. If the original idea isn't sufficient, why should I have to suffer it if there's a better executed "copy" from somewhere else? And if the copy isn't good, wouldn't the market decide its fate?

In an interesting experiment, a couple of Artists hired a polling firm to ask people of various countries what they would like to see MOST and LEAST in a painting. Then they executed the paintings and the results are interesting. For the US, the most wanted painting was a landscape painting, with lakes and forests and deer. You can see the painting here: http://awp.diaart.org/km/usa/most.html. I think it's fair to say it's an entirely innocuous and forgettable painting. But it does illustrate (!) exactly what happens when you try to appeal to the widest audience - mediocrity.

You can see the rest of the paintings for other countries' responses. It's interesting to see that all the paintings are roughly the same, save for Holland. http://awp.diaart.org/km/painting.html

These artists also used the same methods to create a most-wanted song, and the result, again, is about what you'd find on your average pop radio station (at that time). The link to the song is also on their website

Those 2kw spikes could be anything number of things: electric kettle, AC/(electric)heat, electric stove, anything with a large current draw or sometimes even a combination of smaller devices turning on at once. It gets even worse when it's more than one person in a house.

I worked with a company trying to solve exactly this problem - breaking out device usage from the whole house power, and the results were not very encouraging. The only sure thing the software could identify was that... someone was home and maybe the AC/Heater cycling.
