It depends on what you mean by "understand programming." If I were hiring Java developers and someone walked in with a strong C++ resume and no Java experience, I'd hire him (that was my situation when I took my current job - it took me 3 days to learn Java well enough to be productive). But if I were hiring C or C++ programmers and someone walked in with no C or C++ but a strong Java resume, I'd send him on his way. Why? Because they have no experience in managing memory, which is the biggest challenge in the C/C++ world. Similarly, I wouldn't hire a strong C programmer with no object programming experience to do Java or C++, because it takes time to learn to think in an OOD manner.
If you want to know one language that will prepare you for a quick transition to (almost) any other language, I'd recommend C++. Between memory management, OOD, and outright obnoxiousness, it prepares you for just about anything other languages can throw at you.
Between the libertarian right, the religious crazies who will conflate this with the "mark of the beast", and the lefties who don't trust law enforcement, this will never get through Congress. If it ever came to a vote, the uproar in the intertubes and talk radio would be deafening and the tea party loonies would all die of apoplexy.
Here is the cure for your ignorance concerning the alleged theft by Apple of the Xerox GUIs:
As for Nokia, they are, as other posters have noted, trying to hit up Apple with more stringent terms than other companies. Apple wants to be treated fairly.
I wish I had mod points: +1 insightful. You are especially spot-on about these people's lack of faith. I pity the poor creationist whose weak faith can't survive the scientific realities of evolution. Someone with a real, abiding faith in God wouldn't be affected by evolution or other scientific theories - they would just adapt. Christianity survived the discovery that the universe doesn't revolve around the earth, and it can survive evolution.
Sure, you can go through the proofs and run some experiments - if you're a mathematician or a scientist. For the average Joe, these activities are as foreign as eating boiled locusts for dinner. Average Joe will doubt (and already does doubt) because he lacks the training to understand how math and science work. And average Joes outnumber and outvote mathematicians and scientists by a large margin, and end up electing the scientific ignoramuses who dominate one of the US national political parties.
I haven't had any problem because I ride my bike to the Silver Spring Metro. But my wife got stuck on Rockville Pike yesterday afternoon trying to go to a store. She gave up and headed for home, and the whole trip, which should have been 30 minutes, took her 2 hours.
Depends on where you ride. I ride to the Silver Spring Metro most days, and often ride from Silver Spring to Virginia. Maryland drivers suck, as do DC and VA drivers. But as long as you stay away from the homicidal Metrobus and RideOn drivers, it's not too bad.
I don't care about AdBlock, but I stopped using Chrome because I couldn't run Flashblock on it. Without Flashblock, I have to reboot every day because the machine (WinXP) gets so bogged down. With Flashblock I leave it up all week.
Flash is evil, and if I can't block it with Chrome, I won't use Chrome.
Nonsense. If your cat wants to explore and socialize, he can do it on a leash. It just requires you to be willing to explore and socialize with him.
We had two cats until recently (one had to be put down). Both indoors cats. One of them (the one we still have) used to love to go outside on a leash. He didn't complain at all about the harness and leash, and would explore our yard and the neighbors yards with us in tow. The other cat didn't mind the leash but didn't like to go out - the big room was too scary for him, I guess. The one who used to like to go out has lost interest as he has gotten well into old age.
Cats can thrive as indoor pets as long as they have an interesting enough indoor environment and interaction with their servants (you) and preferably another cat. Leashed walks are a bonus. There's no need to let cats roam loose outdoors, and they'll stay healthier and live longer if they don't wander loose.
X-10 works great when it works. But their build quality is just about the worst of any product I have ever seen. It's rare for a timer or module to last more than a few months past warranty expiration. It also doesn't play well with compact fluorescent bulbs. Don't waste your money.
What a crappy, dishonest summary! I despise MS as much as anyone, but this is too much. Yes, it asked them to remove iTunes, etc., but then it reinstalled them! And everything worked.
Sony says no Linux on the Cell.

The Slashdot article and TFA are both shameless rumor-mongering and wild speculation. What a waste of perfectly good bits.
damn, clicked Submit too soon
Should be:
Forth heart if honk then
Forth if honk then
(actual bumper sticker seen in 1985)

What does naming their bank after Japanese comics have to do with it?
Oh, wait. Damn dyslexia.

Your fantasy world sounds like fun. Do you sell tickets online?

I'll have to take your word for it seeing as how it's already Slashdotted.

This is the best description of Steve Jobs and his role that I have ever seen. Kudos to you, sir.
What humorless moderator modded this Offtopic? Some newbie who somehow got mod points and doesn't know the "Stephen King is dead" meme?

This is similar to why corporations don't want Card Check, to intimidate their way into power.
There, fixed it for you.
Bring back vent windows! They were very effective in the days before AC, and I miss them.
I pity you for your lack of musical joy and your l*m*ted vocabulary.
They made music in the '80s? I thought the music died when that plane crash took Buddy Holly, et. al.
