It turns out there are some very smart people who believe that the earth is flat because it can mathamatically proved,

Yeah, and I had a calculus prof who wrote very believable-looking proofs that black is white and that two plus two actually equals five. He then went on to show how such mathematically lazy proofs are more common than you think. It may not be that no one has been able to find flaws in the proof, but rather, the people capable of finding them simply couldn't be bothered to play into the games of such kooks.

Anyone who would believe such "mathematical proofs" hardly deserves to be called very smart.

Chances are, your three year old laptop is hopelessly antiquated and effectively obsolete by that time (three years ago, the average laptop was a Pentium 166, now effectively obsolete in many cirles). Given the less than upgradeable nature of laptops, it's just another step towards true forced obsolescence.

I'm not saying it's good for us as consumers, but I can see how Toshiba, IBM, et. al. would like it. It would be another way to somewhat subtly force you to buy a new laptop.

I agree, Rama seems far too grand to really translate to the big screen without being cut up so much that aside from the character names and a general plot line, it would no longer tell the actual story. Basically, I could see this turning into another Dune, a good enough movie in it's own right but in the end, it wasn't Dune.

Now the Foundation could work, but it would have to be a mini-series. To do it proper justice it would have to be several parts which would cost a lot.

Truth is, a lot of the classic science fiction is just too intelligent for the big screen.

And this new scheme is hardly likely to stop them for long, someone will eventually hack the reg. key or bypass it altogether and the pirates will be right back at it.

This one is just going to make it difficult for the casual (and hardly harmful) pirate and make it very annoying for the average user who will now have to either ask Bill's permission to upgrade his PC or buy a new copy of Windows.

All during the summer we've been warned that the only thing this movie has in common with the novel is the title and the setting of Mars. The movie was in no way based on Heinlein's Red Planet and if you'd actually read the book, you might know that.

Now granted, you do have a point with Starship Troopers and Puppet Masters. Both movies trivialized great classic Sci-Fi stories and turned intelligent writing into typical Mental Pablum sci-fi, hollywood style. I too hope 'they' never attempt to make a movie based on SISL, there is no way hollywood could possibly do it justice. The censors and religious fundamentalists would have the story cut down to one useable page before the script could even be penned.
