I have known people who owned AK-47s. They were modified to be semi-automatic, not automatic as this was necessary to make them legal. I am not aware of anyone that I know ever killing anyone. These rifles saw use as hunting weapons and target practice. What made them better than more civilian looking rifles? Well.. they look cooler... That and anything made or at least originally designed for military use is also more durable.
Something you need to understand about hunting gun owners... these tools are considered to be family heirlooms. AND they get dragged out into the woods every fall! If you are going to take a prized posession which you associate with your long dead grandfather out into the brush you want it to be durable!
The handles are more convenient too, easier to hold. Gun control proponents point at things like that as being proof that a weapon was made for killing people but why? Do you really think a guy stalking a deer doesn't appreciate a better tool the same as someone pointing one at a human target?
I don't think I know anyone that owns and M-16. I assume pretty much the same stuff applies.
I miss the days where distros didn't really have default desktop managers. They had a dozen or more desktop/window managers to chose from. If you and I both installed Linux, even from the same CD (different times) our computers would still probably come out unique!
Linux users actually liked to look at other Linux users' screenshots because they didn't all look the same. Sure.. you can still chose to install whatever GUI you want but how many Linux users out there now think that Unity or Gnome just IS the Linux desktop. No, I'm not trying to start a flame war about the merits of either Unity or Gnome. It's the homogenizing of the Linux desktop. Something that was once fun and unique has become little boxes all the same.
If the DM is the compositor does that exacerbate the already dismal situation? Does it make DMs and WMs harder to write thus implying there will be fewer to chose from? Does it mean that if I want an advanced feature (such as network transparency) then the list of DMs I can chose from shrinks down to a small few that chose to implement it? Most of the development seems to be behind the big, bloated [IMHO] DMs like Gnome/KDE. Am I going to be forced to use one of those?
What about applications? Does it mean an application will have to be built differently to work in one DM as opposed to another?
To me this feels more like Android than Desktop Linux. Sure, it's a Linux kernel underneath but who cares, all an Android user ever sees is Android. Will all a Gnome user ever see is Gnome, Kde users KDE, etc...?
I think some of the people who are for illegalizing germline editing do acutally think they only mean to prevent it until we know what we are doing better.
Today on the way to work I was listening to the radio. The were talking about how the state of Michigan just removed a bunch of old laws from it's books. For example, there was a law that you could not make fun of someone who challenges you to a duel. In 2015!
Laws are easy to create, very hard to remove. I don't think anything should ever be outlawed that we expect to one day consider a positive thing. Even if we are not ready yet. Go ahead and pass some laws requiring testing and ensuring safety as much as is reasonably possible. That is, IF existing laws don't already cover that. Do not pass laws forbidding techniques outright.
You mention the drug industry.. I can totally see them supporting a fake grass roots effort and helping to give voices (funding) to useful idiots who are anti-technology.
I really get upset when I read people writing about how germline editing is unethical. My wife suffers from terrible symptoms that are at least partially genetic. It had not flared up, we did not know how bad it would get before we had our daughter. It is unlikely we will have a second child. We don't know what she inheritted. It could get bad for her in her teens, her 20s or even her 30s. We will not know until if/when it happens. It is scary.
So many people seem to be saying that even if it is possible to eliminate such suffering we shouldn't do so. We should just keep passing it down to our children because that is 'natural'.
I wish they could all suffer a single day of all the terrible things they would like to condemn our descendants to, just long enough to realize how horribly wrong they are.
Germline editing I think is the BEST way to handle genetic disease. Eliminate it once and for all. Even if the same disease can be treated so as to eliminate the symptom.. what if one day a descendant of the patient is unable to obtain the treatment?
Good. And after they perfect it, if they horde it this way then the rest of us can steal it!
Even if the 1%ers of today managed to get there hands on such technology and hold on to it realy realy tightly so that the rest of us continue to age for the next several generations it would not last forever. Eventually they will lose control, perhaps through a 'whistleblower type' among them growing a conscience and publishing directions on the internet, maybe through an outsider stealing the formula or even just as a result of the class inversion that naturally comes about every few centuries or so in the form of a revolution.
Let the 'gods' have their fire. Then at least we can hope for a 'Prometheus'!
What do you mean it isn't dire? In response to me saying that the supposed freerdp support in Weston doesn't really exist? My very point was that the situation IS dire.
Since I only get to pick one thing just go down through this list in order. The first thing a device doesn't have.. that's my pick for that device.
1) USB Host 2) Video Out (Probably HDMI) 3) Above should both be usable at the same time 4) Ability to add drivers allowing one to use above USB host with devices the original manufacturer never intended 5) Mouse friendly (but not mouse required) UI 6) Slide-Out Physical QWERTY keyboard
And just imagine if Anonymous actually stopped a major terrorist attack. They would be eliminating a major source of FUD that could have helped convince people to allow intelligence agencies to even further erode our privacy! You know.. to "protect" us.
Ah, so Apple is where Google got that idea for the GMail app then. It makes sense now. Does that button mark the message unread so that I will remember to read it in depth later or archive it so that I will likely never see it again? WTF?
He didn't say that it did excuse anyone who 'just go[es] raping people'. I really doubt that anyone is ever going to seriously come on and argue that rape is ok. If they do then it's probably either a very imature troll or someone with serious mental issues that probably should be locked away for the safety of society.
Fault is not a zero-sum game. There have been many many cases reported publicly of girls chosing to attend frat parties where the frats were already well known for getting girls drunk and doing things to them. Then they chose to consume large amounts of alcohol and even go upstairs. That certainly puts them at fault for their own situation while in no way lessening the fault of the rapist.
The fact that a victim may be at fault for putting themselves in a bad situation does NOT excuse the perpetrator. They still absolutely belong in jail. Also, it is not nice to point out the victim's fault when the victim is already emotionally suffering from what has been done to them.
However... life is not nice. I think that by pretending that a person is not responsible for the situations that they knowingly walk into is very dangerous. It is a disservice to the next girl who might have learned better. If girls think it is ok to walk into such situations then there will always be predators inviting them in.
I will certainly be teaching my daughter that walking into such a situation is both dangerous and stupid. I won't just point to such stories and say see.. there are bad people that would want to rape you (although I will say that). I will also point to the girl and say see.. if you do these things you put yourself in danger, don't be like her. I love her enough not to pretend that the world is nice and just hand her over to the wolves only to complain about them after they have eaten her.
What exactly are we talking about here? Grab and take? Or just repeatedly asking? Begging?
If a friend wants $5 to go buy lunch or a beer or something and I don't want to give it.. if he keeps bugging me, asking me for it, "wears me down until I give in" that isn't theft.
By that same logic I don't think repeatedly asking for sex until she gives in is rape. It is annoying. It is behavior that should probably be responded to by cutting ties, not rewarded by sex. But it's not rape.
How does a woman rape a man? Is she spiking the alcohol with viagra? Alcohol, in quantities that removes one's self control also removes one's erection.
Why the obsession with terrorist communication anyway?
There seems to be some universally accepted idea that communication is this greatly important thing that terrorists must master in order to pull of big attacks. Why?
Why do they need large amounts of secure communication to pull stuff off? Do we really know that they do need and/or use that? If terrorists suddenly had no electronic communication would terrorist attacks somehow stop happening?
Why can't a group of terrorists simply gather in a member's livingroom and have a talk? If they intend to move to various cities, set up identities and all that junk before they strike.. so what? Then they meet ahead of time and agree that they will strike at X time on Y day 2 years from now or something like that. Then... they go their separate ways to build their new identities.
Why would terrorists NEED to communicate to kill a bunch of people?
I think 'intelligence' organizations are obsessed with the idea of terrorist's communications because obsessing about communications are their job. Spying on those communications is the only tool those people have. It's the old adage.. when the only tool you have is a hammer.. everything looks like a nail.
When they complain that they need more hammer.. the public.. scared and not thinking just accepts their word.
They should make that restricted area huge! Cover the whole earth except for a little circle around senator feinstein's house. Make them all fly there!
Real bootloaders are written using toggle switches and pushbuttons, not keyboards!
How can there be a high-quality copy of an Expendables movie?
Better crab people than American politicians.
I will never understand why so many people seem to have email accounts that are full of naked pictures of themselves.
What a doubleplusungood quote.

Nuclear bomb? Now that's just silly isn't it.
I imagine that the situation probably actually extended at least a few people's jobs by 5 years. Hmmm.... accident?

Exactly, all those old PCs and Macs will get thrown to the dogs! So.. which will they prefer?

Wind, coal and hydroelectric (which you didn't mention) are all solar powered.

Awww, poor Enlightenment. Why would anyone want to do that to you?
I'd like to add that all I have ever been able to get Weston+FreeRDP to do is segfault. As far as I can tell remote access in Wayland is only a myth.

nah. RedHat is already doing a fine job of that!
