This is pathetic. Everyone here decides to ignore the actual huge gains in progress, and focuses on some arbitrary ranking done by an international group.
What's shocking is that, surprise, the market works and actually builds value without creating an inefficient government program. Right now is probably the most exciting time there is in broadband, with 3g, Clearwire, Comcast, and DSL all competing for the same broadband market. Not to mention when Google decides to get in the game. We're likely to see some of the most amazing broadband infrastructure in the next 5 years, due to the current high demand (untapped market) that you guys are all bemoaning as a sign of our country's failure to take over.
The reason for this? Government has stayed the hell out of our way. Companies tend not to like to compete with the government, so when you guys eventually force Uncle Sam to be our monolithic broadband provider because you want to get a better ranking on the all important international index, then investment and private business dries up, and we end up having to call our congressman when our broadband goes down, and they are the only one provider available.
I dunno, I think in retrospect it was a good decision (for Bungie's benefit) to marry itself to Microsoft and Xbox. Had they released Halo on PC/Mac and not as an Xbox exclusive they probably wouldn't have even 1/4 of the hype they have today. Halo 1-3 are universally recongized as incredible games, really on the level of Half-Life but sometimes it's better to start out as a big fish in a small pond (initial xbox launch). They were able to define the entire xbox platform and benefit from that. If they were just another Half-Life, I doubt they would have got the mass attention and fan devotion they currently respect.
Still, I was pissed at the time Bungie "sold out" and am still bitter about their complete betrayal of PC/Mac gaming. They could have at least given us a port for god sakes within 6 months of console release... like GTA. Hopefully their distance from Microsoft enables them to support their initial user base and bring back some fans who have abandoned them (like me).
Considering the RAGE engine is initially developed for the 360 (Table Tennis), its a fair assumption to make.
Also, Rockstar isnt the only ones having problems. Its widely known that EA sports games on PS3 are currently running at half the frame rate of the 360 version. Also, every Unreal Engine 3 based game on the PS3 this year has had major technical issues (slowdowns, glitches). Its not like its the PS3's fault. 360 was a year ahead of them, and developers are more familiar with it.
Take Two really cant afford this slip. They are in big trouble as it is, and this might sink them (or force them to sell out to another company). They should have gone the traditional route of timed exclusive on a platform (either PS3 or 360). They would have been able to get a nice chunk of change from the console maker plus been able to completely focus on that single platform. And in 6 months they could port it to all the other systems.
I actually played all of the bonus songs when I completely tapped out the original songs. They are cool, but they aren't as valuable to most people. No way they'll be charging 2 dollars each for them, and if they do, no harm done since no one will buy them.
Though it would be sneaky and evil if all their 3 song packs had two independent songs and one career mode track. I'm sure they thought of it.
Sorry, the 17 independent songs don't count. There are only 30 career mode tracks, which are the ones anyone would care about. If you bought all of these, it would be $62.50. Fine, a bit pricey but most people will only buy what they really like. They should bundle all 30 songs for 40-50 bucks, but it's not a big deal. I'll definitely buy maybe three or four packs (20 bucks worth) and be completely happy with it.
I just hope they release the upcoming 80s pack on 360 via downloadable content. The price point is perfect.
Well, the neat thing about real mice is theres one to one relation to in game movement. When you move a mouse in an FPS, the character's perspective moves within the in game world. Have you played Red Steel, Call of Duty, or Far Cry on wii? There's a little reticule that you move around to aim. It's pretty tough to aim, and as much as I dislike traditional game controllers, its far inferior. Unless they figure out a better way to manage the controller within the games, a traditional controller (xbox, playstation) works 10 times better for controlling an FPS than the wiimote.
Unfortunately this is the big lie. I bought a wii and was disappointed that the remote doesn't really do 1 to 1 movement very well. The inevitable light saber will be exactly like Red Steel, a gesture based game where you need to move a the right time in the right patterns to "block" or "attack".
It still might be cool, but don't expect to be waving your lightsaber around onscreen based on the movements of the remote.
Basically what we have is a pointing mouse with gestures. It works great for Zelda, action rpgs, and minigames. FPS's and simulation style games aren't going to the strong suit.
Still the book that started it - Computer Job Survival Guide - is still one of my favorites. Followed Janet's advice since college and only good has come of it. Highly recommended.

Did you mean Gamespot? They had a similar review to what you said. I watched the X-Play podcast review and they worship the game (as I did).
I read that almost a year ago and its a great post. I agree with most of it yet still use Rails everyday. Notice in it he's giving an opinion about the future of Rails. However right now, its an amazingly productive framework to develop in if you're targeting startup web applications.
To me the development tools for Rails is like a holy grail. Coming from.NET and Windows, switching all mac for Rails has given me a sort of coding nirvana that I didnt think possible. Developing code, writing tests, reusing gems and plugins, and deploying builds (cap deploy) is a near flawless experience. When something better comes along, I wont hesitate to jump on. But for now, Rails is my optimal experience for web development.
Console makers always forget that price is a huge factor for most console gamers. I'm completely stunned that Microsoft hasnt dropped the 360 core down to 200 dollars in order to respark sales. If they don't act fast, they are going to miss a golden opportunity. I know they say they arent competing with Nintendo, but they definately are. Most gamers have a single console and the Wii is an attractive choice right now (even though it should be priced cheaper as well).
I fell for these guys because of the cheap price and over 3 years of doing business they have been the absolute worst registrar I have ever used. Switched to godaddy right after this fiasco (lost about 5 domains... dont care that much they were useless anyways). I know godaddy gets a lot of shit too, but compared to registerfly, they are like registrar angels.
Registerfly's main problem (besides this fiasco) is their horrendously bad website. For years it took 15 seconds per page request to edit changes on a domain.
From your post "CO2 is one of the few molecules which saturates water more easily at a lower tempurature" "Therefore, as temperature rises, the ocean can hold more C02."
You must have meant "as the temperature rises, the ocean holds LESS C02". Otherwise you mistyped somewhere.
Not sure if you're a soda drinker... but usually warm pop goes flat. Colder temperatures will always help hold CO2.
As a long time dreamweaver user (Since 4.0), I tried Expression web designer last week and really like it. The interface is better laid out than Dreamweaver and it has a really great HTML View (where I spend most of my time). The css support is also top notch.
ASP.NET really has nothing to do with this editor. Its focused on HTML and CSS. If you are an ASP.NET developer, it will let you drop in server controls and thats about. You'd be crazy to use this instead of Visual Studio.NET for real coding. This is purely an HTML editor.
All developers (including PHP/JSP) can use this to build their HTML comps before making the site dynamic. Once it stabalizes it will definately give Dreamweaver a run for its money.
I'm a long time resident of Seattle and very few people in my state understand the influence our Indian Casinos have over politics in this state. They make tons and tons of money and arent afraid to spend it politically to get what they want.
This law is a direct result of that. They dont want the online competition to their casinos.
Just a few months ago they were the main sponsors of an initiative to ban smoking in all bars and restaurants. Surprise surprise... casinos are excluded from the law. So the only place WA residents can smoke are in the indian casinos.
It's really ridiculous. I'm all for gambling, but right now we have a gambling industry that exploiting government purely for its own advantages. Now we cant smoke in bars or gamble online mainly because the Indian Casino owners dont want competition. And the liberal politicians of the state follow along like lemmings.
Horray for Nintendo making money! That just makes my heart warm.
But seriously, why do people brag so much about how Nintendo makes money on all their consoles? Microsoft and Sony lose money on their hardware, and who benefits? Us. We get fast, expensive machines for lower price because their willing to take some risks.
If gamespot, 1up, ign, etc acted professionally and used words right from the Nintendo marketing department's damage control warroom, I would be sick to my stomach. Hardcore gamers run those websites and they are going to react naturally juvenile in light of a really really juvenile name.
If they got fired, I'd stop reading those publication and start reading the independent blogs that they would launch the next day.
That's both wrong and insanely stupid. I asked a publicist (buddy of mine).
People get confused. The correct slogan is "Bad publicity is better than no publicity". This sometimes applies to startups. However its also suspect and just something people say when they have egg in their face.
Nintendo is the last company that deliberately tries to make mistakes to get bad publicity. When their President takes a dump, it gets covered by at least 10,000 news articles.
So please, stop with the nonsense spin. Take a look at gamespot's video poll. Every single editor there thought the name was terrible. If nintendo does well with their wii, it despite the name, not because of it.

Wow... I can't believe the outrage. I'm guessing it's mostly stemmed from the disinformation that the original guitar hero game had 47 songs in it.

Global Warming on Mars... hmm.. I wonder if it has to do with the sun...
O 2_Science_rel/index.html

The Sun's temperature is not constant
The ocean holds CO2 (when it rains, it get mixed into the ocean.. think soda)
When the Sun's temperature increases, the ocean releases CO2
Hence people think higher CO2 means higher temperatures, when the reverse is actually true.
