Despite I totally agree, the FCC is still worried about it's apperance to a point. If they kept on overlooking this people will be more vocal accusing the FCC of being "bought" and make people hate them even more (censorship is bad enough)

Announcing an investigation seems to be more of a way to save face, chances are they wont look to hard and "wont find anything unusual" but that is just my skepticism.

  8. I remember on CEO of Red Hat Steps Down · · Score: 5, Insightful

I remember the 1999 article about Szulik rising to CEO level. Since then Red Hat has done alot and have become very successful in their business model.

Not to mention making a rival in Oracle after buying JBoss, so in retaliation we see Unbreakable Linux.
And despite Novell's best efforts and prostituting themselves out to Microsoft we still see Red Hat in the #1 position.

Red Hat will do great without him (a company after all is bigger than one man) but we have seen a company growing so well under his leadership and that speaks volumes

I agree, the US Govt could have done it but they just wouldn't

Microsoft spends so much on lobying to get what they want its not funny. If the US wanted to split Microsoft in half (which there was talk of many moons ago) the would have, problem is Microsoft pay alot to be near exempt from anti-trust laws. The EU despite no doubt having corruption there too (all govt's have it, just a question of how much), are not as well bought as US congress seems to be.

It's not so much that they care that much that their format is an ISO standard or not, its more about the following points

    1) When someone accuses Microsoft of not using open standards they will point to OOXML if it gets passed
    2) They dont want ODF to be more of a "standard" than OOXML, on paper or otherwise as it gives people incentives to switch even if it is a small amount.

They have to be careful not to get to arrogent in the media, saying boldly ISO standards are meaningless, Microsoft standards have more meaning will expose them as bragging about not adopting standards and bragging about being a monopoly that wants to lock you in. That too could turn people away.
