  6. Re:Just Bought on Sony Calls Current Blu-ray/HD DVD Format War a 'Stalemate · · Score: 1

You could get VHS products cheaper because manufacturers could make them cheaper without forking out to Sony. This is a classic example of people/companies failing to learn from their mistakes. This is what made Beta a bust despite being the superior format
Problem Sony had was they expected the PS3 was going to be the "must have product" of the decade and crush Microsoft and Nintendo, which would increase demand for Blu-Ray and people would have to go along with it. Today, the PS3 is in distant last place (karma?), Blu-Ray is not taking off as a result and adoption for both HD formats are pretty slow as the average consumer does not see any real benefit that is worth the cost. When prices drop, whoever can drop pricing more efficiently will end up getting the major momentum and will be the format of choice. I for one think both technologies are irrelevant as by the time the strong majority of people give a shit about HD, optical media could be obsolete

Agreed, this is the primary purpose of the GPL and what makes open source so great. This idiot would be better off asking "Does Oracle Unbreakable Linux hurt Red Hat?" As they DO provide commercial support.

By this guy's logic he should ask himself "Does Fedora hurt Red Hat?" "Does Linspire hurt Ubuntu?"

The reason RHEL is in the #1 seat isn't just because they have a great product (which they do) but their support is brilliant as well. Companies that want paid support take that into consideration.

OSX was loosly based on NeXT. It's kernel is Darwin which is based on NetBSD.

Linux is loosly based on Minix only ditching the microkernel design and got support as the GNU kernel (another microkernel) was going nowhere.

Minix and BSD are based on UNIX, anyone can make a UNIX System III derivative for free as the code is public domain. Just most of the code is obsolete so you are better off making a BSD or Linux derivative (or Minix 3 if you want a microkernel)

So if you look at a family tree, Minix and Linux are brothers while OSX and Linux are more like cousins

Windows is the annoying friend that spunges off you for handouts and crashes on your couch
