It would be really nice if Facebook would do more to protect and promote civil rights but they're under no obligation to under the law. They're a private, for profit corporation, and as such, they're not required to protect civil rights. The only legal requirements that corporation has are that it not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, and age.

  7. I used to like both Linux and BSD very much. Then systemd hits Linux and now I only use OpenBSD. Besides, Linux has become something of kludge.and it is less secure now than it was.

  8. The problem here is not one of technology, it's a lack of resources, planning, and project management. While I'm very pro open source, the operating system is a minute detail in all of this. Linux won't magically be a saving grace because it too will have problems. I like making open source a choice versus forcing it down everyone's throat like some religious dogma. The laptop program failed due to incredibly poor planning and resource management. As much as I hate saying this, teaching kids Linux won't prepare them for the Windows dominated world. Instead open source should be taught alongside Windows. That will make kids more well rounded.

  9. Dumb idea on No One Is Buying Smartwatches Anymore (gizmodo.com) · · Score: 1

It was, as the subject reads, a dumb idea. I don't even wear a watch. If I need the time, I have my smartphone.

  10. Not built well on Class Action Lawsuit Grows Over iPhone 6 Plus 'Touch Disease' (vice.com) · · Score: 1

These days electronics, along with just about everything else, are not made to last. This is precisely why I buy cheap, easily replaceable Android smartphones. There is no point in spending 800 some dollars on an iPhone 6 Plus when you could just buy a laptop. I'm laughing at the sheep that buy the iPhone because it is perceived as a status symbol.

  11. Let's replace the computers controlling the nuclear launch system with ones from Lenovo! ROFLMAO! After all, just about every major computer component is made in China. Let's make it easy for our new overlords.

This just reinforces the fact that my mistrust is not incorrect. It is not terribly difficult to do and you can find howtos. I even have a backup mail exchange and name servers.

  13. With Bluetooth headsets so cheap now, I no longer see the headphone jack as really necessary. You can get a decent headset for as little as 20 bucks from a store like Big Lots.

  14. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck. Lenovo and Microsoft most definitely colluded.

  15. I'm running Android 6.0.1 and I have specifically disabled location for Google Play Store and Google Play Services has not asked for any location services. I have not been able to find any issues. Of course, the Android version I am using is fairly stock on the ZTE ZMAX Pro.

What are people doing on their phones and tablets that's using several GB per month?

I drive a truck for a living so on my 10 hour breaks, I usually watch a movie or a show or two. It all adds up quickly.

3 months is the standard notice time for a developer (and for most qualified jobs) in France. This is written in your contract when you get a job. This is both ways: when you leave or when you are fired.

So leaving without notice time (or with a shorter time) is something you have to negociate.

Now that is perfectly fine. The standard of professionalism applies equally to bother employer and employee. I have absolutely no problem with that.

  25. Double standard on Ask Slashdot: Is It Ever OK To Quit Without Giving Notice? · · Score: 1

I for one, am sick of the double standard. Employees are expected to be professional and give two week's notice, however employers are not held to the same standard of professionalism. Whenever it is feasible and possible, I'll give two week's notice but I don't have qualms about leaving with less notice. Anyone defending this double standard is either an employer or an employee that has been so utterly brainwashed by corporate America that he or she will literally lick their boots.
