It is a joke. All software patents are joke. The reward should be for the best implementation. So what if you have an idea. If you suck at implementing, the you make no money. If someone else does a great job at implementing it, well the, you can refer back to the old saying: "10% inspiration and 90% perspiration."
The blackbox approach is always best if the system will allow the abstractions to do it; if not, then you gotta get down to the metal. Either way, it is still programming. There are good ones and there are bad ones.
Somewhere in the world there is the worst working programmer and he is probably writing code as we speak.
You should have charged her out the wazooo! You coul have easliy gotten 150 or 200 per hour. What other choice did they have?
Dang you are nice; I suspect you must be young. And I know for sure that the companies out there do not give a damn about you and you shure as hell should not give a damn about them.
...that the patent office is run by a bunch of idiots. Do they not understand that it is the people with all the money who are screwing the pooch? Most of us can not afford to get a patent because it costs too much in legal fees, research, etc...
If I leave confidentaial papers out in public view, it is not illegal for someone to read them. Same with WiFi. If you do not protect it, it is fair game.
It is apersonal thing; I think. I have considerd it once or twice, but in the end, I just read books on what I want to learn and leave it at that. I have nothing, along those lines, to prove to myself. I have a very successful software company and quite fulfilled.
Hoax, Hoax, Hoax... Sure it would be great. Not just for programmers, but for supplying power to third world nations.
Seriously, if some guy came up with this invention, for real, would be be stuffing this thing in a Delorean? hardly... NASA or someone would have offered the guy billions and he would surly be on every talk show in the nation. It does not take much to hire an attorney and get a patent; surly cheaper than a Delorean with only 21,000 original miles.
Or was that 21,000 jigawatts? No.... Marty, don't push that but...
I almost laughed my arse off on this one. This is the quintessential "Snake Oil" hoax. First and foremost, there is absolutly nothing, whatsoever, on any of the pages that discuss any technical aspect of the TEV. Nothing. Not even a hint at anything remotly scientific. Secondly, it is too well written and thought out. And thirdly, as all of us graduates of "The STar Fleet Academy" know; entroy rules.
Percentages mean nothing unless we have the numbers used to calculate the percentages. 31% of 10 is not such a big deal; 31% of 100 million, on the other hand, is significant.
Patriotism, racism... What is the difference. It is just another way to define differences between people so we do not feel bad when the screw and abuse them.
Screw software patents. Software should be like a book; you copywrite a book, you do not patent it.
"I'm a programmer with 3 years of experience in C, C++, and Java. With the current low economic trends in the software sector, the small software company I've been working for since I graduated is going out of business. Since it's so hard to get a job at another software company with so little experience, I'm considering the option of striking out on my own with a friend with similar development experience and creating a small software consulting company. "
Just what we need: a couple of ding-dongs with three years experience charging out landish consulting fees.
There once was a time when being a "consultant" indicated that you are bring many years of experience to the table. Now, it is a title used by every unqualified, out-of-work, Java programmers left over from the.COM fall-out.
Unfortunatly, we like in a new world where there is too much knowledge for the PM to know everything. This is where the term "knowledge worker" comes from; you have knowledge that your boss does not have. This is perfectly OK. Managing is an art that does not require the specifi technical expertise required to get the job done. "If you want the job done right, find the right person to do the job".
I live on a mountain and I have no grid power or telephone, so cable and short-haul wireless is 100% out of the question. Although I would like to have a better solution, Starband works for me and I hope it stays.
I use Starband via the Ethernet port to a gateway running XP Pro. I use ICS and my down speeds are anywhere from 400 kb to 900 kb and I have seen it hum at over a meg. on late nights.
Up speeds and latency suck, but it is better than using the Avian Carrier Protocol.
I hear Tachyon kicks butt, but the price is was too hight (www.tachyon.com).
Direcway (www.direcway.com) sounds nice too and if something happens to Starband, I will switch to Direcway.
If I had a dime for each person I know that has predicted the downfall of software development, I could retire.
Correct! Nothing worse than watching Netscape cry like a baby.

He will go away.

Hey Charlie, It has been a long time since we were mere code monkies for Dun & Bradstreet.
You should reconsider your whole position on patents dude; you are just stifling inovation. The days for the need for patents has long gone.
Jamey
What a concept. Lets just force the hackers to mark their packets as EVIL.
:)
Funny, reminds me of the Arian Carrier RFC
This explains why my Acrobat reader is crawling. I installed the fix and now all is back to normal.
A VPN would prevent this.

Not a snowballs chance in hell that this is real.
I could use a few people like you :)

OK, let also do the same for stupid slashdot posters.

What I have learned:
- ~80% of all new businesses are started by engineering types.
- ~80% of all new businesses fail.
- Technical people, for the most part, are not business people.
- 3 years of experience will not you make a business success. Trust me. It takes a long time and a large effort.
- You must be focused and have an over abundance of energy.
- You must be able to put your ego and ideals aside when required; you will have ample opportunity to show your $hit; patience truly is a virtue.
- You must be able to ride the storm. In most cases, life will be feast or famine.
- Quickly gained success is quickly lost.
- There is no substitute for experience.
- A partnership is like a marriage. You better be ready for this one.
- You must be prepared to fail. And, when you fail, you must get back up and keep going. Otherwise, you are wasting your time; get a job.
- Attitude is everything.

I agree 100%. The argument is typical of the lazy and incompetent.
Try a Dremel. Mine spins at 30K
