I beg to differ, kinda. I've been using OpenOffice 3.2 for about a month now and I'm not very impressed (could be because I enjoy using MS Office, but thats a different argument). Building charts in Excel take me about 5-10 mins tops (including the information I need to plug in). It took me 2 hours (and frequent references to the help, which on an aside, why is not available locally!?). I will grant its definitely made some improvements since the last time I tried it. Writer is actually fairly decent, I actually could use that without really needing to go back to MS Word.

While I haven't gotten to try out the other aspects, I will note that I am also conducting a 6 month experiment where I use Linux exclusively for my day-to-day work. So far its interesting, not as bad as I thought it would be (though I don't like having to type my password in for system updates or to use sudo (speaking of which if anyone can tell me what the difference between sudo and su is I'd appreciate it).

Funny you mention that, because I'm writing a paper about bad marketing ideas for class and have specifically touched upon how a name, however cool (to its inventors and perhaps its intended audience) really can torpedo a product out of the market. Now granted, I'm probably correct that the GNU Image Manipulation Program on first glance seems intuitive. However, given our current culture and society it has (unfortunately) one of the most worse acronyms (and I'm being generous there) probably created (i.e. GIMP).

I respect that marketing is considered to be worth the effort by most technical types, and perhaps if logic was the only factor in the world (minus emotion) that would be an adequate (if boring) existence. However, we are not emotionless drones (thankfully), and even better choosing the tool which logically fits AND emotionally satisfies normally wins. The name "gimp" fails at the later. A cool name is not a crutch (regardless of what the creators of the application may think), but a bad name will kill a product (good or bad) almost every time.

First, I'm positively certain, Steve Jobs has more important things to do than to sit around and spot check every single application that gets run in his company's app store. However, assuming for a minute that he does, have you stopped and considered that the application that Vlingo's application or any other developer that gets disapproved may have been disapproved for a reason...perhaps a misalignment of either company's visions?

Don't get me wrong, your perfectly able to choose what you want to use (I'm fairly certain you will), but one does have to consider your comments suspect when you start throwing out terms such as "limited vision" since they are not doing what YOU want them to do. Apple doesn't create apps that I want them to do either, but I would never be so...rude, to say or accuse any particular person (e.g. Gates, Jobs, Torvalds, or even crazy RMS), of having a limited vision.
