The more you know, the dumber you feel. After attending all these talks/conferences, I feel like there's nothing good I can contribute to society anymore. The wheel has been reinvented thousands of times and I'm just another guy reinventing someone else's wheel. I really hope software moves into the commodity market.
I really really hope JBoss does not sell themselves to Oracle. I've hated most of Oracle's java products and really hate to see JBoss turn into another horrible product. I for one, really enjoy developing on JBoss products.
Doesn't Oracle already have an application server they bought long time ago? I thought they had bought the Orion server and turned it into their own. I used OrionServer back when it was actually good. The main software developers hung out in the #Java channel on efnet so it was really easy to stop by there and fire off a question or two. Nowadays, I'd have to pay $50,000 to Oracle just for some support help.
I'd say that a significant number of users use p2p type stuff. Everyone I know at work uses some type of p2p software... eventually it will be impossible to restrict users of p2p unless you cut off all your users.
Because it's not Huntsville, AL... it's nowhere, AL. Our operations are in the middle of nowhere alabama. I visited it and I can say that I would be bored out of my wits if I lived there. You'd have to be a real good southern boy to live there.
Nobody said anything about outsourcing to India... We started outsourcing our operations to Alabama and our IT department has suddenly become 100% more responsive. Their fear of losing next year's budget to another US company next door is pretty devastating. For most non-production stuff, we buy our own machines and operating everything in-house, but for production machines we have started outsourcing to other cheaper alternatives inside the US and I'm quite pleased with the progress so far.
So based on one court battle incident you have decided that EFF legal team is good? Perhaps you haven't met the Sony lawyers yet. I would guess that Sony has more money to hire a better team than the EFF.
unfortunately, your manager would fire you and replace you with someone who will get it done faster. Who has time to rewrite the 500,000 line accounting & billing system when we have customers waiting at the door?
Your refusal to understand the parent's comment is just amazing. Do you know the reason why McDonalds makes the coffee so hot? because it costs money to put a thermometer in the coffee maker. Also, it's faster to just boil the water instead of actually warming the water to the specified coffee temperature. People do not want hotter coffee, plus when it is too hot, it destroys the flavor of coffee which is the reason why coffee must be made at a certain temperature. Have you seen water boil in standard coffee machines? of course not...
Have you ever considered that a slashdot comment might actually have some truth to it?
Wouldn't you say Andre Agassi of tennis to be one of the top players as well? Although he hasn't won a grand slam title in 2yrs, he has been in 2nd/3rd/4th etc place in many matches. The tennis world still agrees that he's one of the top players yet he isn't always in first place. Another good example would be Nicky Hayden of the MotoGP world. He's been in Valentino Rossi's shadow forever and thus he's only been able to reach 2nd place at most races, and yet the motorcycle racing community still agrees that he is one of the top in his class. I think if you're maintaining top positions during any match, that you should be considered one of the top players regardless if you've ever actually won a match before.
What useful utility has top sports athletes contributed to society? We probably pay the top athletes the cost of several super computers and all they do with all this money is throw orange plastic balls pumped with air into little string baskets hoisted on a pole. Sometimes I wonder what is the purpose of paying some man to hit a tiny ball with dimples into a hole far far away on a grassy playing field. And every time someone breaks someone else's record of hitting the tiny white ball, they get large sums of cash. But when these super computer people break records, all they get is a little pat on the back. BlueGene/L should be signing contracts with Nike and Pepsi.
Maybe an awful name is a good way to create a well known company. People probably shudder upon hearing the name "TrollTech". Maybe someone should create a company called "FuckTech". People would freak out upon hearing that name...
I wouldn't say MacOS has never had a presence in the office setting. It might be true to say it never had a presence in the office setting for MacOS X, but I believe Monsanto (back before all the mergers/spinoffs) they used MacOS. I know because my father would bring home his computer (a color Macintosh II!) every now and then just to let me play on it... and I even remember his old computer, the Mac SE (which we still have somewhere). They didn't switch to MS Windows until around MacOS 7/8.
My point is that 80% of the questions aren't being answered by anyone. This is just someone at Blizzard PR sending a nice ass kiss to/.
Then do you suggest, that they should hire a large customer support team in India to answer your questions like Dell does? I call tech support on behalf of my parents (because they own Dell laptops) and 80% of the time the tech support people there have no clue what I'm asking or how they should answer it. If you think that the whole "questions aren't being answered by anyone" is a recent phenomenon, just take a look at the real world customers who buy real products and expect the same level of support as you are wishing.
The only time I have ever received prompt and exceeding comprehensive support is when we purchased corporate licenses for our company. I'll also note that JBoss has great support if you pay them a few grand per month.
As another poster has keenly remarked: this question/response is a one time matter. On the blizzard forums, it is a never ending process. As someone who has worked on distributed client systems, I can say that it is not that easy to create such an immersive world with so many users online at the same time. I'm sure behind the scenes, some developers are still scratching their heads trying to figure out why the server crashed on that particular date. You know, pouring over thousand and thousands of lines in the server logs.
My point here is that you are a mindless complainer.
Oh please, if I had mod points, I would mark you as a troll. Given there are 3.5 million subscribers, I seriously doubt the development team would attempt to do customer service. As a professional developer myself, I really do not want to go through all our customer complaints with our software. It's something to keep in mind when developing, but dealign directly with customers is a whole nother matter. Especially since about 80% of the questions could easily be answered by a non-developer, it doesn't make sense to overwhelm the development process by forcing customer support down all the programmer's throats.
Jesus, if you want to ask these questions, why not use the blizzard forums where they belong? For slashdot, I would have expected questions that are not directly affiliated with the game content itself. For example, a question regarding how the servers handle all the traffic in Ironforge during peak hours would be fair game, but a question about character specifics should be directed to the blizzard forums.

A 600GB raid-0 array!

Hell, anything compiled with the GNU compilers.
This statement is incorrect.

duck tape is a brand of duct tape... so it's sorta like making a xerox copy...

Well it's better than those capitalist pigs!

My math is a bit rusty, but isn't 100000 == 10e5? It should be a 100 kilobot instead....
Don't worry, most of the commenters (like myself) won't bother to read the article anyway before posting! You must be new here.

Please keep your spam on the blizzard forums. Thanks.

yup. you're getting old. there are still fun games in the modern age, you just envy the prehistoric arcades.
good god, then all the slashdot editors must only have a high school ged with their spelling competence!!
