From what I have seen, the majority of female programmers tend to be Indian (as a percentage of population). I would venture to guess that the second largest female group are Chinese. I bet that the majority of smart women end up going into health sciences. If she is smart enough, I would think she would favor to become a doctor, knowing full well that the career outlook is far more lucrative and the positions far more stable. Even amongst programmers and engineers, there is a mid career migration towards the health sciences fields (from nursing to massage therapist or home health aide). I have not heard of anyone making a mid career change to become a programmer.
As Orwell put it best, these systems often enter the system as devices intent for good.
You don't have a "Total Surveillance System" in place, you have a "Terrorist Surveillance System".
Its not the "Department of War" but "Department of Defense"!
Yes there is a need for finding, prosecuting and convicting criminals, but it turns out that these systems get subjugatged for other uses.
Just another example of our rights to search and seizure eroding away.
We use to laugh at the Soviets, but we have entered the same level of a police state.
Fundamentally, the Soviets had reasons for maintaining their level of security. 200M Russians died during WWII. They did not want to be subjugate to serfdom.
The American Revolution was fought over less intrusive a system than the one that we currently have. But then, the American Revolution was fought not so much over the desire for taxation without representation, but rather, as John Hancock said, "[He] did not want to give one red cent to King George of England." Ironic, as Hancock had more wealth then he could ever spend in his lifetime. Hancock employed half the population of Boston and owned one third of the property. American people sacrificed their lives for far less gain.
Isn't that a part of any economic model. There are always start up cost in getting innovation geared up to become economically viable?
One thing I like to point out is Microsoft Windows. Win 1 was a failure. Win 2 was a failure. Win 3 was a failure. Win3.1 was a success!
Because the US oil companies don't want this to become a viable industry. And they don't want it developed here either. Just look at the retoric coming out of the Republican party. The only thing that is supported is oil. Natural gas prices are falling to a historic low adjusted for the economy, yet the only solution by the Republicans is OIL.
Yes, it will cost lots of money to covert existing vehicals to nat gas, but then, having a stratified industry protects the US from downturns. This is good logic if you are a major corporation, but apparently, not for the US, or should I say, the people who run it. I was surprised to see an interview last year on "Mad Money - Jim Cramer" by an executive from the natural gas industry who suggested that oil should be tariffed reflect the military budget used to maintain that industry. What an idea, removing economic distortions from an industry to reflect the true market price of a commodity! This will not change the economics of the situation, but rather just allow people to see what the Hell is going on! I am sure if that were to happen, Solar and Nat Gas would become viable industries!
that not everyone who claims to be your friend is really your friend!
Shit, and it took some Chinese chicks offering blow jobs before he spilled his secrets.
Also, there is a huge tendency in many of these agencies to over classify everything.
Good thing he really didn't know any!!
I heard that the security team at Los Alamos wanted to classify a Soviet scientist's presentation!
I guess someone had to point out that it had already been leaked to the USA.
I have heard that there is a nursing shortage too., but that the problem was that there was a shortage of qualified and experienced nurses. Newly graduated nurses apprently were not qualified to do serious work, and as such there is a glut of entry level nurses.
Maybe this is true, but the economy has been bad for years now, and I am sure that if there were sufficient job demand, enough people would retool.
I hear that one big problem for returning vets is finding job. I think that if you were willing to serve in a battlefield getting shot at by snipers, a 300 foot climb is no big deal for a vet in his 20-30's. If the training program only lasts 4 week, I think this need can be met very easily.
I see too many stories and anecdotal studies without serious proof. Show me 10K craiglistings for such positions?
There should have been a full disclosure of the bank's accounts, portfolios and investments.
What's fair is FAIR.
Don't like it, don't accept TARP!
Shit, next thing I'll be talking about is expecting our elected officials to disclose trips and services received from those organizations!!
Well, the reason why companies wish to protect intellectual property is to keep it to themselves. The fact that others were able to use it means that it has a value.
Companies patent and otherwise protect things on which they can profit.
In the BBC version of "A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," a bunch of philosopher were given the idea that they should patent ways of thinking and ideas.
Many years prior to seeing that segment, I asked "Why can't physisists and mathematicians patent their ideas much like companies patent the business process. My thought were that a society as a whole does not want individuals to attain that sort of monopoly. However, companies want to do that.
Consider the drug research field. Scientists working with public grants find promising drugs to cure or relieve a disease. Shouldn't they get more than just naming rights to the drugs? Pharma wants to take over the process and perform clinical testing. At that point, Pharma has a competitive advantage of scale and money required to perform clinical testing. They don't want to be be spending their cash doing stuff that can be diverted to other segments of society!
US planes like this are very expensive from the US.
Back in the 1950's, Canada tried to develop its own plane called "The Arrow". Apparently, the program was squashed in parliament by the CIA paying off key representatives. This sort of technology costs billions and takes years to develop as well as keeping an industrial infrastructure in place to keep it going.
Isreal developed its "Lion" prototype, but the US offered to give Isreal US's top of the line state of the art planes to keep them from pursuing that line.
Maybe over the course of several decades, other countries would develop sufficiently advanced air breathing technology and then where would the US be.
I just want to know what technologies will be still be around in 10 years if I am still working.
I saw an ad for a FORTRAN programmer on Slashdot.org today, I maybe I was too haste in removing FORTRAN and InstallShield from my resume. Either that or a 1000 people applied for that one opening.
I once inherited a motor design which I was modifying. There was a strut going along the entire length. I was thinking of removing it, as I could not find a use for it. However, I wasn't sure if there might not be a manufacturing reason for it, or to provide additional structural support..
So I left it in.
Why, because 10 years ago, I was fired because I removed some venting slots on another generator. I removed them because they only provided minimal ventalation, but really interfered with the magnetic field distribution.
I say that you break it down into components.
Open source as much of the generic stuff and presentation layer. The advantage is that maybe someone might come up with something better than you can.
Close source those components that you feel are propriatary and a competive advantage. Unfortunately, the line might not be well defined as you wish. Also, watch it, as people can reverse engineer many a things, especially if it becomes worth their time and effort.
Unfortunately, there is very little enforcement about the line between terrorists and dissidents. Suppose that the African Civil Rights program were in motion right now, instead of during the 1960's. How many of the activities that happened then would be considered fighting for freedom vs fighting against the US. Or suppose that the South were trying to succeed from the Union. Would that be considered treason, or fighting for one's own liberty?
Fundamentally, a government which has enormous power over the constituents is considered right no matter what the fundamental issues are at hand. People are very persuaded and easily motivated to tow the party line, especially if they have somewhat of a stake in the outcome.
Consider the bail out of the US banks in 2008. Something like 70% of the people did not support the bailout, yet it went through. Suppose that citizens had taken up arms to influence this decision. How many of those people would have been successful in stopping their future tax revenues from ending up in the hands of rich and elite gamblers who decided to speculate in MBSs? With this level of surveillance, it would be easy to round up and send off to detention camps those who publicly opposed OUR government. The rest would fall into line. We laugh at the Soviets, but we have the best form of government that money can buy.
People like to point out that there are people who are gateways. I guess this is someone who knows a lot of people, but maybe not well. I guess someone like a food vendor or clergy falls into this category.
If you know that someone lives in Kirbardi, you want first to get your letter to someone traveling, who is probably going to find someone else traveling to that part of the world. This really means that some tried to superficially fulfil the requirements of the challenge, which might not be a factor if trying to do this in a natural fashion.
Unfortunately, we are in a world flooded by cheap Chinese and Indian goods. Unfortunately, when it comes to cheap and quick, I don't think the Chinese or Indian have anything worse than everyone else. Just look at housing in the US. Most of the buildings are shoddly built. Even upper middle class houses fall into this category. I had so many problems with my previous almost new house. Yes, you could have it built by good old blue boys, but I doubt that construction workers really value quality.
We, unfortunately it is not that simple, Why don't the police start taping all arrests as soon as they get started. With all the investment in recording technology, why not have police cars always record what happens all the time. My suspicion is that the videos might catch the cops doing something illegal. That is not the way it is suppose to be. You take those nice clean footage of arrests and show them on COPS, to show how much we need a strong police force (and yes, we need a police force) with some liberty, and the records with "alternate persuation methods" are not recorded lest someone screams bloody emtrapment.
You can easily spin the situation your way if there is less evidence to to contradict your narration.
I was fortunate enough to have history teachers who were knowledgeable of the situation involving the formuation of the Maranda rights. I remember that the judgement only stood for about 8 months, before it was back to business as usual. If this were not this way, it would be a great story for "Hitchhiker's Guide".
I was in NYC when I wanted to take a picture of the buildings around Wall Street. I was approached by a rent a cop who informed me that that was illegal. Well, this is BS. First, I see thousands of pictures of NYC taken and posted every day by professionals, so if I were in scouting for targets, I think I would have the camera in my backpack. Shit like this goes on all the time. Worse, most lawyers won't even bother to help you on issues like this. I guess it makes them look bad when they try to grease the skids for high paying clients.
Americans think Israel deserves special treatment are the same ones whose grandfathers enslaved Africans and wiped out the native Americans as a start. 50 M Africans died during the slave trade, and that is hardly mentioned during any academic curriculum discussions on a holocaust.
As a side note, Nazi Germany received major investments from American Industrialists like Ford, Getty, and DuPont. Roosevelt was only too happy to see Hitler turn on Russia, read his "Its time to suffocate this Bolshevik baby in his crib", and only when it was realized that Hitler was going to not be content with expanding his empire eastward, did the Westerners decided to make a stand. England disregarded its treaty with Czechoslovakia when Hitler annexed the Sudaten Landen.
Back in 1995, there was a news story on the major networks about the US giving Israel weapons which Israel would turn around and sell to the Chinese who would use them for their Silkworm missiles. Somehow, this investigation died in committee and was never brought up in the Senate for full debate.
Israel was questioned about their involvement, but they just gave a canned response, "Israel does not discuss its military workings on public forums," and that was the end of that story.
Just like the other night, I was watching CNBC's coverage of "The China Question." Regardless of the fact that the majority of the US population does not support giving money or weapons to our great ally Israel, the same story could be narrated as "The Israel Question", but somehow that story never makes it to public television. BTW, I was actually shocked to find that Ronnie Reagan in his diary wrote that Ronnie thought that Shimir was an international thug. The only way that I can explain that is it must be disinformation to show that Ronnie was thinking of the average Joe!!
