MIT is a school where professors make a lot more money doing industry sponcered research. As an undergraduate, you will likily be ignored because the graduate students will get most of the time and attention by the professors. The graduate students are unpaid slaves conducting research on behalf of the professors who hope to graduate and get out of their predicament ASAP. Most professors at MIT are there because of their great research record and previous accomplishment and not because they can explain themselves well or teach.
OTOH, a school like Dartmouth values undergraduates and rewards professors who teach well.
Instead of spending effort on pushing metric, the US govt should have tried a pull approach. Mandate that all contracts and business with the government be conducted in metric units. All public construction project bids will be submitted in metric, from public restroom to public subsidized football stadiums. If it starts in the construction industry, it will spill over to the rest of the society. Within a decade, all new Home Depot & Lowes hardware store inventory will follow.
I have to agree with this one. There are lots of field in which one needs to have a well rounded understanding of things in order to make progress. There are lots of things you have to learn in a formal setting. Many graduates get deluded into believing that they will get lucky and find a job using our college degree.
Zuckerberg was successful in an endeavor that that not need those skills, was able to lean somethings on the job, and was able to find others who would do that for him when he needed those skills. I have met lots of highly educated people who undervalue their own talents and value. As P.T. Barnum said, "There is a sucker born every minute, and two to take him."
Lots of Americans believe in the capitalist dream of becoming that top 1%. Few of us realize that even people like William Penn ended up penniless.
Yes, I think they have to learn about warez or some other site. Maybe even fund the development and maintenance of servers so that "pirates" can post on.
Unfortunately, a lot of commercial software sucks royally. I have seen better SW on slashdot.org than most places.
Does anyone know what happened in the final outcome of this case. I tried searching on Google, but can't seem to find the right case.
Back in the early 1990's, I read in Newsweek about a case where a (Russian emigrant) summer student worked for Tampa Electric on how to remove calcium buildup from pipes. He never made a lot of progress during his summer work, and the project was halted afterwards. However, the student persisted at the problem and came up with some solutions, which he patented under his name only. Once Tampa Electric found out about his work, they grabbed the patent from him because they funded the initial research. He refused to turn over his lab notes and was being held in jail on contempt of court, when the story made it to the news. Does anyone have any references or additions to this case?
MS provides little to no support for its OS.
On the other hand, I got free tech support for some MS freebie, I think it was IE when it was competing head to head with Netscape.
Well, this is certainly an up in the industry. Just 3 years ago, most pilots were complaining that the economy as well as the reluctance of travelers to deal with the security measures were driving travel to an all time low. I guess if we were serious, we could drop the mandatory retirement age temporarily (and replace it with a more comprehensive physical and mental exam which allows able pilots to continue flying) until more pilots become trained.
Or we could have different categories of pilots, full commercial pilots having the full 1,500 hrs of training, and categories for pilots having less training and experience flying small planes with fewer passengers, and ones having say 300 hrs for flying only cargo and staff.
U of Wisconsin at Plattville is cheaper than U of Wis at Madison.
Students who transfer from Plattville to Madison after their 2nd year find themselves repeating many classes because the caliber of the teaching & competitiveness of the students is vastly different.
You would have been better off going to U of M in the first place.
I think our predictions of the future (regarding the singularity, robots, biogenetics, wealth, energy, and space exploration) will be as off based as these were.
This is interesting in its own right as it shows just how myopic these visions were.
I always laugh when I see our future depicted in movies and TV shows. Looking at Star Trek, we see how much the architecture is so 1960's. The knobs and lights look right out of 1967. Even something like the CRT-TVs in UFO and Space 1999 are dated.
I think there should be far more discussion in the schools of the falacy of religion. It should be done under the guise of critical thinking.
Students should be actively pushed to write papers and have public debates poining out the falacies of religion.
Simple subjects like, "Why Believe in God", and a good discussion of "The Suffering of Little Children" from "Brothers Kramozov" should start things rolling around.
More active discussions should include "The God Dilusion" by Dawkins, and pretty soon, most priests will be pissed off.
The Russians have been doing this sort of thing for years in math.
I would think that these sorts of contests are something that new CS students would notice and prepare for. Now, this presents the opportunity of getting noticed by the West, the chance for getting a schlorship at a school like Berkley, and potentially employment at a rich American company being paid in dollars is icing on the cake.
I head that the Chevy Nova sold poorly in the Latio markets. Nova means "No-Go" in Spanish.
Funnier yet, in 1990, Perdue Chicken had a marketing problem in Japan. Their logo, "We sell fresh chicken" got translated by someone who had been away from the day to day culture of Japan. It came across as "It takes a strong man to make chickens fresh". Moreover, the choice of the words strong and fresh had a sexual connotation. Apparently, this commercial had the Japanse rolling around on the floor laughing in uncontrolled hysteria.
Yes, the Argentinians sold the Falkland Islands from the British. Just like China stole Hong Kong. And slave abolitionists sold slaves from slave owners.
Stick to your tools and tech. I am sure that there are established projects which need some tweaking. Maybe you can convince someone to port those to the cloud.
Your competitive advantage is your established experience and tools. Chose your battles wisely. It will be hard to land a job where they want young whipper snappers, but I bet there are lots of ongoing projects which need you. You have to find and convince people of that. Its not that hard. Managers are RISK ADVERSE like HELL.
"For if the King does it, it is not wrong."
-Richard M. Nixon as depicted in ATT's movie.
It just goes to show how little the world has changed in the last several thousand years.
During the Middle Ages, there were laws for Nobles and laws for Commoners.
Obviously, all this talk and laws of Democracy and Feedom confuses you.
Back during feudalism, you could be excused for certain crimes if you were Noble, now you just have to be able to afford a lawyer who could use his clout and knowledge to get you off due to some technicality. Face it, laws are written for lawyers to make work for lawyers. On top of that, most judges will let certain things slide and other things are disregarded solely based on the presenting lawyers and client.
I wonder how far this goes! Is the notion of the counting numbers innate? I have heard that monkeys cannot count beyond 4. The way that people figured this out is that if five hunters go into a forest as a group, split up and hide. Then one by one, four hunters leave one at a time. The fifth hunter stays in hiding, the monkeys come out of hunting, and the hunter shoots a monkey. This does not happen when there are less than five hunters initially.

I suppose your office mates put tripwires outside of handicap access ramps?
With friends like you, who needs enemies?

Just as when Nixon died, I asked, "From whom are the next generation of politician going to learn?"
How many have a moon stabilized system to keep the planet from tumbling?

More like "engergized"?
What do you think we caffeine drinkers should call ourselves?
