Actually, This works out very well.
I have actually bought and paid for each of the OS's released by MS since 3.1

Now thanks to all of this DRM garbage, usage restrictions, and just general suckage I will not feel bad at all when I download the version that has been cracked to not have DRM, not phone home, and that I can gennerally use however the fsck I want...

Thanks MS for helping me justify my piracy!

  4. Tivo Too! on MythTV 0.20 Released · · Score: 0

I have a mythTV box AND a tivo (wife had one with lifetime sub when we got married).
MythTV has come a long way (congrats to the whole team), but as to which is better, you need to evaluate your needs.
When I moved in with my wife first thing I did was upgrade drive and hack the Tivo... as any good slashdotter would. At that time the tivo only really supported video sharing after hacking, and being able to watch on other computers, or send tv shows TO the tivo (either from mythbox or pc) was the most important feature to me (besids season pass)... Back then MythTV ruled hands down... since to get the same functionality you needed to hack Tivo anyway.
Fast forward a few years... I actually UN-hacked the Tivo a while back (left huge drive in though) because the developers actually listened to the community and now provide the ability to share things through the network (both out of and into the tivo), play MP3, picture slideshows... pretty much everything except playing MAME/SNES roms.
If you want the fun of building a Myth box, or want it to be a file server/torrent box, then of course Myth wins hands down.
But... if all you want is for the machine to record all (or just new) episodes of a show, play MP3s, see picture slideshows, watch recorded videos on your pc (or other boxes in the house), or put divx "home movies" INTO the box to watch on your big screen tv... Tivo can provide a pretty simple solution that does the job just as well, or maybe even better...

  6. Not the EVIL it seems on Car Owners to be Notified of Blackboxes in Vehicle · · Score: 0, Interesting

I worked for a lab that did the automated testing of airbag controllers and though you are all jumping to the "Evil" conclusion (and putting on tinfoil hats) this is really not the case. Though I will concede these records stay arround for use if some really serious accident were to occur, and some insurance agency with really deep pockets wanted to get the evidence, it could... but that is not why these are in the airbag controller in the first place (that is where the EDR or event data recorder lived on the vehicles I tested controllers for lived) The reason these are in your vehicle is actually very simple. Think of all the scenarios that occur in a car. Gravel raod, railroad tracks, potholes, ect... you do not want your airbags going off just because you hit a minor bump in the road, or even if you "crash" but at a very low speed (like backing into a pole). The conditions you want to fire the airbags is a very precise set of circumstances. With newer cars that have curtian and many other airbags too, it also wants to take into account "is the car upside down" and such. In order to make the most accurate assessment possible, and thus have the least false positives possible, as much data must be recorded for consideration as possible.... RPM, Orientations, TIRE PRESSURE, ... the list is long. The catch is only 10 seconds or so is usually kept.... just enough for a crash/pre-crash record.... I know this is slashdot, and we (yes me too) usually assume it is the government/big brother watching and trying to control us, but for a change, this is nothing but trying to make cars as safe as can be. It just so happens a side effect of this is allowing insurance agencies to get a better glimpse of what was really going on... but really, is honesty ever really a bad thing? If somebody rear ends you, and said they were going 25mph, and your accelerometer/ their EDR said they were going 50mph wouldn't you want that to be known by the judge? If not... enjoy you will probably be enjoying your airbags a lot more if you live on bumpy roads or near train tracks.

hacking the tivo was once worth it to get a lot of extra functionality out of the box. Blizzard,
I hate to be the one who has to tell you this, but people are still going to whine about the game being improperly balanced or their character class being underpowered. as soon as somebody in WOW loses a dual/pvp combat it must have been because their class is unbalanced.

There are people out there that will complain that their mage can not win a sword fight with a paladin.
That is the nature of a MMO... people will complain.
you can either do what SOE did and continually change the game listening to the complainers, slowly making the people who liked the game as it initially was quit (and you will eventually be left with a GREAT warcraft-starwars galaxies clone),
OR you could take a stand and tell the people if they dont like to get beaten by paladins, make a paladin, and when you dont like getting beaten by rogues, make a rogue. If you still cant deal with it point them at the box and say it is rated for teens and up, and suggest they go play some bob the builder.
