"Thousands of other students will have broken this rule in the past sitting around a library table or a kitchen counter - why did the university let them get away with it?"
Forget study groups. No student should ever ask for help from their teacher. That would be cheating.
Orcs and Elves for the DS is one of the best games I've played recently. I think the iPhone/iPod Touch would be excellent platform for games such as Orcs and Elves and the Doom RPG. One thing though I have to say about gaming with touch screens is that you often obscure your view of the game.
For example Zelda and the Phantom Hourglass on the DS is a great game but controlling your character often covered up the action. Orcs and Elves on the other hand had the controls on the touch screen (though you could use the actual game pad keys which was my preference) and the action on the upper non touch screen. So you never obscured your view.
With the iPhone/Touch you just have a single touch screen so you would really have to do some thinking as to how to avoid constricting your view when your fingers are in the way.
It wouldn't surprise me a bit if Carmack and Fountainhead were working on getting thier games out as soon as they could on the iPhone/Touch.
"Don't get me wrong, the downloadable version is damn fine, but i'd like to have a hard copy with printed artwork and everything."
My understanding is that is what the $10.00 package is. Physical media with the ability to download the digital content while you are waiting for your CDs.
I disagree. The numbers are a good sign. NIN loses nothing on those downloads and potentially gains a great deal. I have downloaded the nine free tracks and listened to them. I plan to buy the $10.00 package. I'm sure many people will do the same thing. Some will stick to the $5.00 digital package, others will go for the more expensive one. Actually, it might be fun to get the more expensive package and play around with re-mixing the songs. Seeing what happens when a bunch of re-mixes hits the net will be interesting.
Let's say you have a 5% chance of having your brain eaten if you try a new fangled rabies treatment. Old fashion technique, you have a 30% chance of dying. Doing nothing, you have a 99% chance of dying. You might give it a shot.
Yes she and everyone else should protect themselves. Saying so isn't cruel, its a damn good suggestion. I'm not saying the strong shouldn't help the week, on the contrary. But everybody has to do something to help themselves otherwise they won't have the strength to hold on when the strong reach out to them.
The lady who took advantage of that little girl doesn't deserved to be pissed on to put out a fire. What she did was absolutely horrid. Hopefully she does something to help make amends.
"He violated a clear written policy. The guy is stupid for thinking work published on an internet blog doesn't count as writing."
Well, I won't bother taking the high road and stick to insulting your intelligence. You're an idiot. That is not a clear written policy. It is intentionally vague.
They are everywhere. And with everything, to each his own. Show me a Rembrandt, play me some Bach, recite Shakespeare. What if they don't speak to me? What if I find no value in them. Perhaps it's not for a lack of looking. Perhaps there isn't any and someone at some point decided to make something up to sound enlightened and the masses just followed along.
That's great that they can't tour but do you believe that if someone is a one hit wonder in their 20s that they can bring in money from the album when they are 90? If you are producing nothing, why should you be compensated for it?
No, you work for money, you don't ride on the laurels of your 15 minutes of fame for your entire life. The duration of copyright should be far shorter.
Yes. And I honestly look forward to the games release. Yeah, my wife was 'thrilled' when I started quoting lines from D3D after watching the teaser and describing some of the events from the game.
But the goal of so many isn't to make money to fund development but rather to hit it big with their one hit wonder and ride on its laurels for the rest of their lives.
But your counter argument isn't taking into account what the parent is suggesting. That the difference is really in the drivers. Sure the Quadro will win with professional apps in terms of speed but why is that? If it's purely because of the drivers present then I'm not to happy paying substantially more money for a few lines of code. I'll take the cheap hack if the consumers cards performance doesn't cut it.
Is it possible that if Nvidia drivers were completely open source that we'd quickly see drivers that put consumer card performance on par with that of the pro cards? Now it's been a while since I tried any of the card hacks. But I did use one that aloud me to make use the specialized drivers for Max. Now this did substantially improve however I had stability issues so the hack wasn't worth the speed increase. This was on NT 4.0 using Max 2.5. Maybe the hacks have improved, I don't know. At this point I just use a consumer card as the performance meets my needs.
I was in Oregon a few years ago. Forgot about the whole gas pump thing and started to pump my gas. The attendant ran up and said something along the lines of "Sir only a trained gas pump attendant can pump gas." I apologized saying that I was from California where we pump our own gas. I guess he thought he should respond and reiterated the whole trained gas pumper thing. I told him how many years I had been driving and pumping my own gas and asked him how long he had been working at the gas station. He mumbled something about a few months or something and was silent after that.
I guess I'm nicer than your #2 but not as nice as #1 after a long days drive.
And yes, sometimes idiots spill gas on themselves. I've seen gas station attendants do the same.
Well, you've probably played them, and no doubt people will have made the same suggestion as I. Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2. Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale 2 are also pretty good. Oh and Planescape Torment. Neverwinter Nights (has the ability to have a DM and play Co-OP, make campaigns ect) was good but not as good as Baldur's Gate 1&2. The Temple of Elemental Evil wasn't bad either.
Neverwinter Nights 2 and more recently The Witcher are both decent games but fall into the category of games where graphics get in the way of the game. I don't mean to say that it's bad to have nice graphics but rather these games brought decently fast systems to their knee's. Computer Games tend to follow a one step forward, two steps back in terms of graphics quality. A game will use all sorts of cool stuff to make it look great, however in order to actually run the game you have to turn all the detail off so it looks graphically worse than the previous generation of games. I suppose that's a different topic though.
"If you watch kids on a computer, most of them are just hitting keys or moving the mouse as fast as they can. It reminds me of rats running in a maze."
You say that I should listen to an expert opinion before making my decision. What if the experts remind me of rats running a maze? One thing I've learned as a parent is there are no experts on the subject. There are zero. There are a lot of people that I look to for advice but I take nothing as an absolute. There are a lot of people that have opinions and I listen to them whether I agree with what they have to say or not, there is another piece of information I can use to be a better parent.
What's arbitrary is observations made by observers who have no idea what the people are studying are doing.
Actually, I had some trouble downloading Undertow. I kept getting an error stating that content was not available or just getting the same error I got when XBL was down. So while you were modded funny, what you suggested did happen.
Your worry is warranted. As Penny-Arcade put it, green is the new purple. Heck, green is almost the new orange. Our guild leader almost replaced Hand of Ragnaros with a green. He held off and replaced it with a blue.
And while I'm running around in epics right now I have no doubt I'll be replacing many of them greens come next expansion. Heck I wore a pair of green pants that was better than everything I came across until I purchased the Merciless Gladiator pants.
Does it kill the endgame scene? Not really. For those that are there, it has become stagnant (though next patch with the new raid will bring some new fun for them). For those that aren't, expansions bring something new that can be attained.
"Thousands of other students will have broken this rule in the past sitting around a library table or a kitchen counter - why did the university let them get away with it?"

"From my experience, the IT folks are usually the anti-social type and really aren't that fun to be around."
You must be new here. You may leave now.

"Only if you choose to see it that way."
These are not the droids you are looking for.
"He is a producer for a media outlet. He decided to not give CNN the first option for publishing what he was writing. That is a huge no no."
Are you serious? Why on earth would you give your employer first option for publishing your personal blog?
"He violated a clear written policy. The guy is stupid for thinking work published on an internet blog doesn't count as writing."
Well, I won't bother taking the high road and stick to insulting your intelligence. You're an idiot. That is not a clear written policy. It is intentionally vague.
Well I guess it's pretty obvious what type of ads they expect to be serving up.
"So where is the Shakespeare or Bach of gaming?"

Something like that. I'm not sure I'd notice the difference if I watched TV (must less had cable/satellite).
Your marketing ploy has succeeded. I now have the overwhelming desire to by a pack of M&Ms and crush the weak.
Yes. And I honestly look forward to the games release. Yeah, my wife was 'thrilled' when I started quoting lines from D3D after watching the teaser and describing some of the events from the game.

Ditch that moldy 'ol eight minute abs routine! Seven minute abs is where its at! With a touch screen!
'Democracy inaction'
Fixed that for you.
