I spent 2 hours trying to get GOW2 playing on my 2 ps2's. Both lasers gave out after 6 months, and I will not buy another one. I hate sony, and i wish they would go the way of sega, giving their good first party software to MS, or some other company.

How does this strategy differ from your strategy with PSP homebrew?

NPR is more balanced than any other Newsmedia in the U.S. You want left leaning, go listen to Democracy now. It's funny, because as the nation swings left and right, NPR is perceived as right or left, respectively. During the clinton impeachment, many were arguing about how npr had swung right. And the underwriting. Get over it. Talking about Merc doesn't make me want pills. At least it's not "go buy a sandwich from mcdonalds!"

My computer does these things just fine already, thanks. Am I missing something here? I don't care about tracking "achievements" over several different games. Why would i? 16. Re:More than Australia on Australia Outlaws Incandescent Light Bulb · · Score: 1

My CF in my house turn on instantly, 95% bright. The cheaper ones (in the less used rooms) were the cheaper kind that are full bright in 30 seconds, and you get used to it. The amount of electricity to get a lightbulb running is something negligable.

The most important thing that I think Austrailia is leaving out is Disposal of CFs. They have Mercury in them, and when they break, they can cause birth defects or cause infants to get sick. If they don't have a way to dispose of these (America doesn't yet either) then our garbage cans will need to get ready to be highly toxic areas (lightbulbs generally break when you throw them away).

I thought "neocons" were barry Goldwater conservatives, people who watched what democrats were supposed to do after segregation ended in the 60's and 70's, and failed. So they feel that through demonstration of a strong army (by using it) and threatening other countries and war and conflict is the oil (forgive the puN) that greases this country and keeps it going. After the cold war ended, the neocons needed a new threat, hence the focus on terrorism and how much it is going to kill us all.

Yeah, But no one seems really surprised or sad about the delay. I think Valve puts out strong enough products that everyone understands the delays. I'd rather have this game at the end of the year instead of a game that is just cashing in and sucks.

This also allows for the hype machine to swirl over a long amount of time, constantly building anticipation. With how formulaic Vavle's delays are, I wonder if they are just a marketing scheme.

  19. Re:All-or-Nothing on The Economist, DVD Jon On Apple's DRM Stand · · Score: 1

I'm sure this is the case. If i was a record company (heaven forbid) I wouldn't want to have to peruse the iTunes website constantly to make sure apple was keeping up with the DRM on MY songs. It's easier for them just to lock down all the songs. Perhaps Apple could create another store with no DRM, but that's another story.

I'm sorry, but there are people out there who don't want to be stuck to an iPod (many /.ers) so they don't shop on iTunes, because they know better. But i would think that a lot (majority) of people who buy on iTunes don't give a damn if they have to use an iPod for the rest of their lives to keep those songs they bought. They want something to play their music, they like their iPod, so they see no reason to switch to another music player.

  21. Re:My eyebrows are raised.... on RIAA Says CDs Should Cost More · · Score: 2, Interesting

The Worst part (that you left out) is that there is a huge problem with companies "shelving" bands. Works like this:

Find any band that sounds like one of your premade bands (but is probably better)

Sign them into an explotative contract (that they cant get out of)

Record their album (like it says in the contract)

Shelf it and never release it (so they don't compete with your premade band)

This happens enough to be scary.

  22. Re:::sigh:: on Jobs Favors DRM-Free Music Distribution · · Score: 1

Sorry dude, but 70% of music not being available through your store isn't exactly the best way to get people to shop there. the iTunes store would have flopped without this, I mean, look at the competetors to iTunes that are DRM free. Minor, minor marketshare.

I look at this essay as a major step, the owner of the largest online music store stepping out into public and saying, "Ok music industry, It's your turn to let go now." I hope that iTunes takes a allofmp3 approach, but on a scale that is sustainable (for the musicians and those involved). Charge me with size of file, and let me pick ogg, mp3, aac, or whatever the hell I want at whatever bitrate I want, and I'll pay $1 a song.
