Something like: Did I actually kill someone or just dream about it? It's usually easy enough to flag that with a "not reality" bit quickly. Although I have to say it is rather disturbing for those first few minutes of consciousness. Maybe this is the side effect of playing certain games immediately before sleep.

  7. Re:The most retarded story ever? on Vista Hackers Get Busy · · Score: 1

That actually makes me wonder about some companies which provide customization options. Somewhere toward the bottom of the list you usually find this little drop down menu that lists off a couple OS options, which usually look something like this:

    Windows XP Home Edition (-$46)
    Windows XP Professional Edition (+$0)

The question now is how is Vista going to fit in there. Will XP Pro become a -$ option or perhaps even a +$ option. Of course Vista already contributes an insane amount of confusion to the issue with it's like 5 different versions anyway.

  8. Re:Uhh... on How Often Do You Replace Your Hard Drives? · · Score: 1

Sounds like you are referring to the chances of "Infant Mortality" (or whatever the correct technical term is when referring to hardware). That is when a device dies early on in it's life. Most factories do some kind of burn-in test to make sure the device meets some minimum standard of "working". This imposes a small depredation in device life, but also results in many more satisfied customers not having to deal with immediately returning merchandise failing from a manufacturing flaw. Once you are past that, the device is in it's normal life cycle, where it's assumed to not have any serious manufacturing flaw which could cause failure, but is still subject to the mean time to failure curve. The older it gets, eventually it will likely fail no matter what in the very long term.

I can't even think of reading TFA based on the summary. I thought Warrior Within was the best in the current Trilogy. I found all the improvements made completely up to my expectations. The Prince's dark and brooding attitude of impending doom made it even more thrilling than the first. The mask of the wraith was a really neat plot device and mode of game play... although some of the temporal inconsistencies it introduced were a bit disturbing.

Overall, I'd highly recommend Warrior Within as a fitting and appropriate sequel. The Two Thrones was a bit of a step back to the original in terms of the Prince's temperament, but worth playing through.

I actually got confused when going to buy a chip thinking AM2 was compatible with a socket 939 since the chips seemed to be named almost identically. Fortunately I realized it was actually different when I glanced over some other review raving about ddr2 and AM2.

Maybe make the last digit of the number a 2 like Athlon X2 4002+. That would clearly differentiate between that and the socket 939 flavor of the same chip. I suppose most vendors specify the socket type right in the item name so maybe it's not necessary. Still, just glancing over things and I got a completely false idea like the 2 would be compatible.

  18. Re:Sounds like so much BS to me. on Blue-ray 'Not a Burden' For Sony · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yea... but remember a vital restriction on the disc swapping setup. The fact that disc swap games are at least to a point, linear. And that is what allows them to set up the game like that.

Take a final fantasy game for example. At some point in a disc change, some content becomes unavailiable. Now I'm sure a fair amount of that space is FMV's, and most of the game engine / world can be duplicated (more wasted space btw since it has to be on every disc). As a general rule, most FMV's also only play a single time as they are typically plot advancing in nature rather than some repetitive situation the player would find themselves in. I can think of maybe a couple spots where they would reuse one, but usually it's a one time viewing thing.

Now lets say we want to make a game where the player has access to essentially all content at the same time, and to populate the entire world we need say 4 DVD's to do so. Lets assume that there is a large world map, with many towns on it, and the player can rapidly fly to any town in an airship in a short amount of time. Lets assume a single disc can hold 10 towns and 10 dungeons worth of information in any combination, and that players can be expected to go to any random location at any point in time. Imagine that in the worst case scenario every time you enter a town or go to a dungeon you are asked to swap discs. Doesn't exactly sound like fun does it?

  19. Re:The bookstore has more than just "regular" book on Sony Reader Now Available · · Score: 1

The problem with adding compression could be the CPU overhead. If something as simple as changing pages slowed down even a little I think people would get annoyed. If the device had enough ram to always keep the entire document in an uncompressed form it would be a good way to save on storage space and the compression ratio on text is likely pretty high. But with how cheap storage is now, I'd be more concerned with speed on an embedded device.
