I hate to be defending US carriers. But keep in mind that a wireless plan from a major US carrier buys you access to way way way way more wireless towers than your Hong Kong plan.
Also, sometime you should take a look at the Sprint 69.99 plan.
1. Unlimited SMS/MMS 2. 5GB data. 3. Unlimited mobile to mobile. Even to other wireless carriers. 4. 450 minutes of regular calls to landlines and roaming.
Almost sounds like the guy who submitted the "story" works for Microsoft. "Google *may* be sharing data with govt. Time to get super mad at Google!"
Sensationalist stuff like this really pisses me off. CmdrTaco posted the story and sure got some ad impressions as a result. But man, do you really have to sink this low?
If you don't want to feed shit to your customers, then you cannot depend on rent-a-coder or a dirt cheap offshore engineer.
If you are doing some really really basic programming then yeah this might work. But for complex stuff, forget it. My experience has shown that about 1 out of 12 offshore engineers you hire is worth anything at all. You go through a lot of shit to find one that has some basic skills to be able to help in any way. Outsourcing was a huge time sink for me. I learned a lot of lessons and I am not going back to it for some time.
I don't have too much trouble trusting Google. They haven't done anything yet that would make me lose that trust. They have a lot riding on maintaining that trust with their users. I have more of a problem trusting the smaller companies (app developers) with my data. They don't depend on my trust as much.
I am surprised that there are so many Cygwin haters out here. I install it on every Windows machine I own. Life would be very difficult without it. I did find the Windows command console that Cygwin uses, very limiting. Cut-n-paste is extremely painful. However I discovered puttycyg http://code.google.com/p/puttycyg/ that provides the putty interface for Cygwin. And now I don't have much to complain about.
For those talking about Services For Unix, does SFU provide all the tools (latest version of Subversion client/server, SSH client/server etc) that Cygwin provides? I don't think so. Is SFU under continuous development, like Cygwin? I don't think so.
Cygwin is an excellent piece of software, specially when used with puttycyg.
> Here's my unsolicited advice: buy an unlocked GSM phone from overseas.
There is no need to do that. Many unlocked Nokia phones can be bought locally, in the US for far cheaper. I bought a Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition from Amazon for $200 (after $50 rebate). http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-Navigation-Unlocked-Navigation-included-U-S/dp/B002R0DWYW?tag=slickdeals AFAIK, it would be very difficult to find this phone anywhere near this price overseas. I occasionally see Dell offer similar deals on unlocked Nokia phones.
Why then, do you continue to live? If you can provide one reason, that might begin to explain why the rest of us want to live forever.
Some of us enjoy life and all that it has to offer. If all the various challenges related to extending life could be resolved one day, we would opt for it in a heartbeat.
Take away admin access. Let them have access as regular users who do not have enough privileges to install anything.
Over the years I have figured out what software they need. I install it when I set up their machine, and that is it. After that the machine is locked down. Very seldom will they come to me and ask me to install anything else for them. Sometimes they'll ask about some silly piece of software and its easy to say "No".
I own a 2005 Prius. My wife and I have been driving it around for years and not once have we noticed a sudden acceleration. We recently bought a 2003 Toyota Sienna mini van and drove it around the country, putting several thousands of miles on it. Never noticed any sudden acceleration with that vehicle either.
This is only anecdotal evidence, but combined with all the various investigations that the govt. has done I am thinking that this is a non-issue.
Droid has GPS receiver built-in. And it caches maps. So if you are out in the wild with no cell coverage, you are still OK, if the maps are cached. Caching is explicit when you specify your origin and destination before leaving.
Hopefully the cache space is configurable. I would give it a lot of space (flash is cheap these days and getting cheaper) and this would be a non-issue.
The huge huge upside is that you dont have to mess around with manually updating map data like you have to do with standalone GPS units. And pay about $100 or so for the privilege.
> I'll bet most technical folks not involved with Linux never heard of the guy.
Mostly true. However, can you name another person in tech who you think beats Darl McBride for the title of the most hated man in tech. There may some people who are long dead that may vouch for that title, but among the people alive today, I think Darl will win.
Interesting. Its not very common for me to run into a Darl McBride sympathizer. The man after all is one of the worst scums the Linux community has ever encountered. He probably is the most hated man in technology. And you don't attain that title for just causing some uncertainty in the market.
The man lied and continued to lie for years. Filed frivolous lawsuits and dragged innocent people into court for years. And illegally pumped his company's worthless stock so that it could be dumped on unsuspecting investors. Essentially called all Linux users thieves and told them that he was coming for them. The list of his crimes and his victim is very long. And there are two suicides related to this case. You do not appear to have followed this scum as closely as many others here. This guy is a con artist of the highest order.
Calling Sarah Palin a moron is insulting to morons everywhere.
Palin is the assumed leader of a highly retarded group of people. When she speaks of death panels or really anything, the rest of us talk about it, sure. But we are mostly laughing at her while we wondering how could she possibly be this retarded. Trust me, this is not a good thing and nothing to be proud of.
Someone here is ignoring one of the biggest draw of Windows. People can run *their programs* on Windows. They wont be able to do that with Windows on ARM. Then they might as well be running Chrome OS or some other variant of Linux. At least with most variants of Linux they'll have huge selection of software that runs on ARM.
I am a customer of their FIOS service. 50Mbps down/20Mbps up. For about $190/month with static IPs and no blocked ports. Nobody and I mean nobody can come close to matching this in Oregon. I hate Verizon with a passion. But there has to be another viable option in my area, for me to switch to. Unfortunately there is none. So I grudgingly hand over my money every month to these monkeys.
The day a viable alternative becomes available is the day I say good riddance to Verizon.
AT&T does the same for their broadband customers. Free wifi at McDonald's, Starbucks and many other places. The biggest difference is that you do not need any specially dumb software to connect.
sits in the background and continuously scans for a Verizon wifi hotspot. Who comes up with these brain-dead ideas to slow down customers' computers?
BTW, I am a Verizon FIOS customer and I tried to place a comment on their blog entry, linked above. I could not do that, even after I logged in using my Verizon credentials. They kept asking me to login. But I am already logged in, you dumbasses. Sometimes I wonder how is it that Verizon can stay in business. These people are utterly clueless. And dont get me started on their "customer portal". A bunch of monkey can put together a better user interface than that. I sometimes have to use it to pay bills/update credit card on file etc. And I cringe at the thought of ever having to use it.
I quit my job a couple of years ago to start a software consultancy. I signed up for Linked-in and added all my co-workers from the previous company. I did not put any more work into it than this. Few months later I got a very lucrative consulting contract through it.
I am not sure what the downside of putting my resume out there for all to see is. I cannot think of any. The upside is certainly very clear to me.
The only time I value my privacy online is when I am dishing out my honest opinion on a subject that might offend some people. Potential employers included. Most other times I do not care if people find out my name, where I work and what I do for a living.
Timothy the Slashdot Editor> Prototype or not, it's a cool project.
A jet engine on a lawn mower does not make an F-16 fighter. Yes this is project is that stupid!

This has got to be quite competitive with your Hong Kong plan. Given the amount of geographical area of wireless coverage.
> Are you a minor, convicted felon, or illegal alien? No? Then you probably have the right to vote...
There are a plenty of legal aliens who are not allowed to vote. People with green cards (resident aliens) for example cannot vote.

It won't be out until June. However the specs are amazing and might be worth waiting for.

> It was dictated by God and written down by the Prophet Mohammed. Is education really that bad where you are?
Sorry, the local madrassa closed down a few years ago.
> Try walking down the streets of Malmo or Rotterdam wearing a T-shirt saying that the Koran was not written by Mohammed, and see how far you get.
Are you 12 years old?
State of Utah has more than its fair share of investment scams:
Here is one of several articles I have seen on the topic:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4188/is_20070107/ai_n17107556/
And after story about the inflatable car, I got the impression that these people were looking to scam investors, and/or the federal govt.
You forgot "Twins". One of my favorite Arnold movies.
Granted I was a kid when I watched it and may not like it as a grown-up. Something that happened to me with "Electric Dreams", Knight Rider etc. etc.

The perl script works more reliably.
