Mario, Zelda, Wario, Rayman, Super Monkey Ball does not appeal to people that enjoy action/realism like R6V, Gow, Motorstorm, etc.
Speak for yourself. I find your post Ironic in that I have each of the aforementioned Nintendo games for the Wii (if you count Mario64 as the 'Mario' game) and I beat Gear of War on Insane, Enjoy Dead Rising immensely and will eventualy get around to Rainbow 6 Vegas... (That is after I get all 120 stars in Mario64). These games are extremely fun for anyone who isn't overly concered that playing them makes then 'teh Kiddie'.
If you want to play a game 'for Kiddies' go play DoA Beach Volleyball 2 with the new, and improved 'jiggle engine'...
If your hypothetical 250,000 people each bought only one classic NES game at $5 each, that's between $500,000 and $1,000,000 of profit! I would be willing to bet that (A)they're selling significantly more than that, and (B)more than 250,000 unique users have bough a virtual console game.
Nintendo announed last month they have sold 1.5 million VC games. So even assuming they were all NES games (which they weren't), but if at least $5 each was spent, that makes your numbers a little better.
I think the issue the parent was having is that these downloads are used to satisfy the hard core, but not the casuals. Case in point, I got a Wii for my retired parents as they LOVED WiiSports and are using the other channels regularly. I personally have 10 VC games, and Can't wait to get Donkey Kong Country tonight, however there aren't [m]any VC games that are good for casuals.
Where is Suduku? / Brain Age, or even Tetris/Dr Mario? How about Ms PacMan, Frogger, or Bejewled? Strangely enough I can find most 'Arcade classics' on X-box live and not the Wii which is MUCH more 'casual gamer friendly'. The Wii is a Great system, but there is currently a lull in the software for casual people, and it wouldn't be difficult to fix if Nintendo recongnized this and posted some VC content for this crowd.
The closest thing the industry has ever had to a true standard was the PS1 and PS2. They provided a fairly generic but powerful platform upon which a variety of games could be developed.
If by powerful you didn't mean technical power (Both the PS1, and PS2 had much more powerful consoles competing with them), but 'critical mass of adoption' then yes. The NES, Original Gameboy, and GBA would also be considered as the 'Defacto Standard' since they were market dominant in their respective eras.
The Gran Turismo series has been going nowhere lately, and people are starting to catch on. GT3 sold 15 million copies, while GT4 sold 8 million. The biggest regional drop was in the Americas, where it went from 7.1 million to 2.4 million sold. Gran Turismo fans are evaporating quickly.
I for one can't wait for GT HD. Although I can't decide between versions... should I get the one without any cars? or the one without any tracks?
I remember those toys you would desperately want when you were a kid for Christmas and they were a blast Christmas day when you finally got them. And then a few days later they were abandoned off in some closet or corner after you realized you were dumb to fall for the marketing hype. What exactly are people doing with their Wii? People can't possibly still be playing WiiSports.
Hmm, this got modded flame bait for some reason, but I think its a legit point
It was meant to be flamebait, so it was modded flamebait. They made the presumption the Wii is only capable of one thing, is a passing fad, and that buying it would be a mistake. They could have phrased the question in a different manner do ask a legitimate question, but didn't. To take the flamebait out of the question and simply ask "What exactly are people doing with their Wii?"
Currently, I use the Channels (internet, weather, and news) almost daily, and the games I'm playing (currently) are WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Mario64 (on the VC), and F-Zero GX. I just bought Wii Play and will try that out tonight.
Personally I prefer the gameplay in for instance Madden on the Wii to any sports game on any other console.
Agreed. However they spent alot of time refining the motion controls (which work wonderfully), and not enough on the pointer. Why is it wonky even in menus or picking a play? I don't get it, but I love the ability to change my guy on the line to a specific player by pointing rather than cycling through them (when it works). It's not even a fault of the remote, just (IMHO not enough attention or time on that 1 aspect). If Madden 08 fixes that, and offers online play I'd be thrilled.
I beat Ikaruga on normal with 3 continues ("easy" with none)
*CLAPS LOUDLY, EVEN OBNOXIOUSLY* That sir is quite an achievement. Part of me wants to call you a liar simply because I know what that feat means, but I will take you at your word. Congratulations.
Honestly, I use my Wii pretty much Daily, and have for quite a while. I don't always play games on, it, but it is quickly replacing my computer for casual tasks like checking my hotmail, the weather and news. Also WiiToob and 'Finetune' are great for Wii's version of Opera.
The games are fun, and I have a healthy collection already of both Wii, and VC games which I think is important. Sometimes I want to play a game, but simply don't have the energy for something like Rayman, or Warioware so I fire up StreetFighter, or Mario 64.
Which is an advantage of the PS3. A hard drive and Blu-ray is good for gamers. It means games can take advantage of both knowing they will both be there.
Not nessesarily. The use of Blu-Ray nessessitates a Hard drive due to it's low read speeds. If they could improve the throughput the added capacity will be a benefit, but as it stands now we have console games requiring multi-gig installs. That should not happen.
Unfortunately Microsoft fanboys don't seem to include XBox Live as part of the cost.
Going back to modularity. Live (Gold) isn't part of the cost if you don't want it. Many people seem content with Silver (which is free), or none at all.
Online gaming is important to some people, but not to others. After all, not Every PS2 owner bought the Network adapter...
Sony could then release the PS3 Q4 of 2007, using a 65nm process and a blu-ray drive that had existed for a year for $400.
I agree. The PS3 looks like it was nothing but rushed, and that they simply couldn't wait until Q4 2007 or they would have lost all marketability. They barely had any units in 2006 in what resulted in a 'paper launch', but at least they retained mindshare, and prevented some people jumping ship to xbox (if they launched 2 years later).
Well.. you're looking at $50 for the game, $50 for a Wireless 360 controller, and another $20 for the PC Wireless adapter. That's a pretty steep cost of entry.
It isn't strictly a requirement but can enhance the experiance. Think of it like sex. 1 on 1 is fun. 4 on 4 can be more fun. Then there's the 40 person equivalent of 'last one standing'...
Yes that's right. It's only the fanboys that say that Microsoft's console is significantly cheaper than the PS3 that are dumb. They've fallen for marketing tactics and haven't taken into account the total cost of a system.
Nope. MS, and Sony simply went seperate routes. The 360 is Modular, where the PS3 is all inclusive.
Do you want HD-DVD? That's optional. Do you want online multiplayer? That's optional. Do you want a Harddrive? That's optional. Believe it or not there are people out there who do't want or need any of those...
Just like how the PS2 didn't have a HDD, a network adapter, multitap, etc... included. If you wanted it you paid extra. If you don't, you don't.
The PS3 simply went the other way and said 'You will have a Hard drive', 'you will have Blu-ray', etc... whether you want it or not and included it into the price.
But once you've gone that far, why not just spring for an authentic Red Octane controller and a PS2-USB adapter?
Or just buy the official 360 USB version when it comes out. I'm sure FoF will be quick to add support for it...
1 Master edition, and customizeable track list...

The Future of Harmonix

· Score: 1
Since only the song content would differ, it would be less costly for Harmonix/Red Octane to produce the different versions than it is to release an entirely new game.
Exactly. Why not a $20 version with the main game engine, and maybe 12 songs then you can buy the bolt on packs online? Or maybe a full $50 for a version with 40 songs (to be unlocked Via online) that are your pick? Put say 100+ tunes online that work, and each retail copy gets to unlock 40 off the bat. If you want more, just buy more...
comparing the Wii and PS3 yet is unfair because they're new.
That was the parent argument. Using the logic that 'Blu-Ray is the Winner' over HD-DVD simply using last months sales as a Metric would also mean 'Wii is the next-gen winner' over the PS3 and 360. Based on January 2007 sales that also would be true.
It's simply bad logic used to come up with a pre-determined ( and meaningless) conclusion.
I love Nintendo, but shoehorning their theme tunes into music games basically killed the Cube as a music game system to me. With the Wii getting DDR and Guitar Hero early in its life it seems it'll be a much more rounded music game system, but if I have to get another console to get the games with real music I'll be disappointed again.
Though I agree that I wouldn't be drawn to a GH game made up Exclusively of Nintendo themes, there are some like The Metroid Theme that would work well. If they had an exclusive 'Venue' where they played them in addition to the traditional ones, or included them as unlockables I would be thrilled.
Have you even played the game? A disgruntled Nintendo fan, I'm guessing.
Nah, he was complaining about lagging games online games due to no dedicated servers. Saddly something Wii owners don't even have the luxuray of complaining about yet. Hopefully Smash Brothers / Battalion Wars II will be great, but for now fans are stuck with waiting.
Gears looks significantly better than Resistance: Fall of Man. While I admit this isn't an entirely fair comparison (Gears is a title for a mature system, while Resistance is a launch-title), there's no denying that the level of detail in Gears goes way beyond that in Resistance.
It is an unfare comparison, not due to Gears Being a second wave game, but because the type of game. Comparing Resistance to Rainbow 6 Vegas would be a better comparison. R6V is still a better game, and I would suggest prettier, but gears was designed from the ground up (by the nature of the gameplay) to look better than anything else. Mark my words, Halo 3 won't look as good as Gears of War.
The game design was built around small environments with a limited number of people on the screen at once. It was a consious design choice that allowed the individual level of detail sky rocket while not killing the frame rate. That's why online is limited to 4 on 4. Personally I'm completely fine with that. I would just prefer to be able to take a group of 4 people I know into a ranked match against a squad of 4 people that all know eachother.
I'll admit that the game is too short (yes, 8-10 hours is probably a reasonable estimate), but what's there is great.
It is short, and we want long engaging, great games but given the alternative would you rather an 8-10 hour game that keeps you engaged, or a a 20-25 hour game that gets stale, and repetitive? My only complaint about the game was that so much of it is nonsensically thrown together. We don't need no stinking story... Bah!
"I can't see Marcus Fenix being note-worthy. The VA did a pretty good job with what he had, but the writing wasn't really there to making any special character performance possible, at least IMO."
EXACTLY!
Lester Speight had a much more memorable character in Augustus Cole. Apparently these people don't know the value of having an Office Linebacker around.:-(
you should really try F-zero GX. Its hard some courses you do have to memorize, but its really fast and its a beautiful game.
Yes, Yes, and YES! Still one of my favorite games. Hard as hell, you get immense satisfaction when you beat anything. Also as craptastic as the Story is (in Story mode) those challenges are also white knuckle inducing. Pretty game in 480p Widescreen locked at 60 Frames per second. Love it Love it Love it.
If you like challenging games like F-Zero GX, try and grab a copy of Ikaruga.
once you get past the stealth and the combat - there's nothing THERE gamewise. I thought the Wii was supposed to be about the frigging game? GTA has been a solid license for Take 2 since aside from mayhem it actually has GAMEPLAY.
Yeah, Manhunt was a total waste. However if they were too busy making GTA4 for the PS360 then could the Wii get a better game from Rockstar? How about a port of Table Tennis? That would be a start. Personally though, I would pick (and pre-order) Max Payne 3... but Manhunt? Bah...
I think they are trying to put out a product to not sell then use that as justification to not develop for the platform.

Any advice for the rest of us?

It's $40 for the 360's Wired (USB) controller.
Dude, I never said it did. Looks like you replyed to the wrong post. Mine was a joke.
It isn't strictly a requirement but can enhance the experiance. Think of it like sex. 1 on 1 is fun. 4 on 4 can be more fun. Then there's the 40 person equivalent of 'last one standing'...
