Of course servers go down. But if they are your own, you have many more levels of control than if they're in the "cloud" -- redundancy, as an obvious example. Or at least you have keys to the goddamn data center and don't have to provide the CFO's p-card to resolve the problem.
In the case of TFA, it sounds like a consumer-grade solution was applied to an enterprise-level problem. Maybe that's Google's fault, maybe that's the customer's fault -- sounds like there's plenty of stupid to go around.
If millions of dollars are on the line, you should be running your own systems. Seriously. I'm not an IT expert, data infrastructure guy or anything. I'm just a dumb nerd, and I know that. Never trust your data to a third party when millions are at stake -- let alone critical infrastructure reliability.
The building in the thumbnail is indeed 611 Folsom. The PG&E building you are referring to is Embarcadero Substation (aka Station Z), located at Fremont and Folsom. There are two nefarious looking buildings there now. The larger of the two is the original 230 kV distribution substation (Z) and the new smaller building contains GIS switchgear.
Many (not all, not most) cell systems these days will pass the tower location on to 911 along with an approximate distance from the tower, and an accuracy estimate expressed in percentage. (Tower location, 300 meters, 90% accuracy).
All true enough. But if the works get cogged up and it just becomes frustrating and impossible to deal with, people may just choose to drop all of it, Netflix, streaming, Internet... all of the home connections, just fucking drop 'em. Do your internet at work and on mobile. Fuck the rest.
I can tell you first hand that #13 on that 500 list is Windows 10 wall-to-wall at the workstation. And #41 and #368 are Win 7/10 mix. Both will remain there for the foreseeable future.
Fortune 500 companies employee 28.2 million people worldwide. Average that out, and those three examples above represent about 169,000 seats. It's a drop in the bucket, sure, but I bet if you really took an *honest* look at what F500 companies actually run internally (at the workstation) you will probably find many more that run Win 7/10, a number I would venture to say probably approaches "most".
"Autopilot" is a poor name for Tesla's driver-assist technology because most people associate the word autopilot with "totally autonomous" and aren't bothered by the nuances of the technology as applied to aircraft. To most folks, autopilot means exactly what it sounds like, and it's pretty clear that there are a number of Tesla drivers treating it as such.
The comparison to an aircraft's autopilot, while technically correct, is irrelevant to the discussion. A remarkably minuscule percentage of the human population will ever see a cockpit, let alone operate the controls. Autopilot means George Jetson era autopilot and that's that.
If you don't teach kids how to spell, then they will just use emoji to convey their thoughts. In the corporate world, this is completely unprofessional.
Name one US federal TLA agency that you do want to fuck with.
Maybe it is news to Google...

Just do it. Don't apologize. It's tacky. Ruins the bit.
How are recyclables collected from the home? Separate trash barrels for each material type?
Three stream systems.
Here is some information on how it is done in Victoria, B.C.

I see what you did there.

One can dream.
"Most" - such a weasel word.

What is "sort of almost 2 phase"?
I'm pretty sure it's because Siri can't understand the accent.
"Stupid" is not a condition limited to Apple users, I assure you.

a law that if it were enforced now would break the telephone exchange instantaneously.
Why? How? Serious question.
It's pronounced "gif".
I would guess some schools have more pressing problems they are trying too address than teaching CS.
Yeah, like "two", "to", and "too".
Translation: If you're still running Ubuntu 14.04, you can get the latest Google web browser as a self-contained package.
Then why can't he (we) just say that? All the pseudo-tech marketing horseshit reminds me of Ballmer's squirting Zune. ffs.
