I'm not saying the parent was wrong or right, but it is strange to me that you focused on how he represented the google name instead of the entire point he was trying to make. What was that about?
regardless of whether you believe my Amazon story, are you actually saying you have NEVER heard of a company giving someone the 'run around'???
This happens all the time, with all major corporations. I can't figure out of you are trolling or putting Amazon on some type of pedestal.
Yes, it can happen with local mom and pop stores as well, but in my experience, local stores will take a hit before any large corporation will. (hence the guy who brought up Best Buy's horrendous return policies)
And you have somewhere to return it. And someone to complain to directly.
The premium you pay is more like a warranty of sorts. Someone/something is more accountable than an invisible mega-corp who mysteriously ships things to you.
Have you ever had an Amazon shipment not show up? It's horrendous trying to get your money back (or a new set of items). Amazon blames UPS, UPS blames Amazon. It sucks hard. It takes weeks beyond what you wanted to wait.
Solitary confinement is banned under Common Article Three of the Geneva Conventions as it amounts to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
I take it you didnt actually RTFA. Because if you had, I think you'd at least want this 22 year old KID to be able to interact with some other prisoners.
FTFA:
"EEG studies going back to the nineteen-sixties have shown diffuse slowing of brain waves in prisoners after a week or more of solitary confinement." Medical tests conducted in 1992 on Yugoslavian prisoners subjected to an average of six months of isolation -- roughly the amount to which Manning has now been subjected -- "revealed brain abnormalities months afterward; the most severe were found in prisoners who had endured either head trauma sufficient to render them unconscious or solitary confinement.
Until he is convicted of something...this is unreal. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY. I hope you never get charged with Rape or Homicide incorrectly and the police beat the living shit out of you, fuck your mind up, and then find out it was somebody else.
I doubt you will accept their 'you have a tiny mind' rhetoric as an excuse.

Yea I hear ya. 2-3 years is actually a really short timespan. If anything broke within that time frame (barring someone smashing it or dropping it), I doubt I would buy from that manufacturer again.
But at the same time, you can't discredit the 'big business' logic above. They only want it to last long enough so that you feel compelled to buy another one from them when it does eventually die.

This LCD craze does have its downsides
See, this is where my conspiracy theories kick in. It's actually a good business model if you make a monitor that only lasts 2-3 years opposed to one that lasts decades. TV/Monitor manufactures may very well skimp on several areas, knowing full well you will be replacing your device much sooner than before.
I don't think the entire world is evil, I just think all corporations are.
I love how the prototype looks like crap. Seriously, it made me smile. Generally prototypes are so polished and finalized, they aren't even prototypes anymore. They are more like "2 seconds away from production" prototypes.
a proxy outside your network would work. it's not like firesheep is a new concept or anything, just a tool that makes it even easier to snoop than before.
No, I rarely write SQL queries in code anymore. Occasionally there might be something I can't do in Linq to SQL, but you aren't losing functionality, you're adding another layer.
You could call stored procedures the old fashioned way if it was appropriate to do so.
Being able to create objects from tables without writing tons of wrapper code is awesome, it's unfortunate NHibernate isn't getting better reviews.
I was going to reply to the parent because we don't use NHibernate, but we do use Linq to SQL.
Since the majority of my database calls are Select statements, LINQ to SQL has made my code a lot cleaner. Include things like improved readability, intellisense, and the flexibility to change my database tables around while just updating a graph, has been a god-send.
Granted, I've been in the IT-world for a while and I have seen what happens when you let the computer automate 'too much' for you. So I can feel the parents pain. But at the moment, I get a heck of a lot more done in a lot less time than I used to when I was writing SQL queries by hand and then passing the results to a DataReader.
I like to bash Comcast as much as the next guy, but 30-40 kbit/sec....exactly when did you switch?? I've had Comcast for over 8 years in 2 different cities and have always maintained faster upload rates than that. By a number of multiples!!
meh, whatever. I like staying current on games. You can live in the past all you want. We probably wouldn't be friends in real life anyway, so this helps avoid that conflict.
I was just typing a quick joke. His response proves even further that I should stay away from VB programmers FOREVER.
I thought it was a Trick Question!
Professional and VB in the same sentence is incorrect grammar, right?
nice, I wish I could mod you +6 Insightful.
Although you were modded up, the parent has a good point.
500 Million is an astronomical number for a SQL database.

Good point...Best Buy is certainly an exception to a mom and pop store.

How about ANYONE who hates the US Government?
There are plenty of people who want the government to look evil.
yea, I probably fall into that category.
i guess i should start assuming all stupid posts are meant to be sarcastic?

**replying to myself. just ran speedtest.net and got 15 mbit down, and 2.6mbit up. I am on the standard internet plan.
30-40kbit, comeon...lets try to be somewhat accurate on this website please.
I can also attest to pulling torrents down at similar speeds, so I do find SpeedTest.net to be an accurate indicator of bandwidth.

No thanks. I enjoy playing against humans on this thing called 'the internet'.
I'm sure you'll reply, saying people still play Q3A and Team Fortress, but not as many as Modern Warfare 2 / Halo Reach.
I wouldn't mind booting up Serious Sam 2 for nostalgia, but that only lasts a few hours.
