    I agree that SCSI is much more expensive than the SATA stuff. So, we have a new standard: RAID and RAED (Inexpensive vs. Expensive). Pronounced "RADE" and "RED".

    Try accounting or HR, which is usually filled mostly by women, anyway (at least in the firms I've worked). Yeah, dealing with debits and credits or with a complaint about someone's body odor is WAYYY more exciting than setting up an OBSD firewall or watching a script kiddie trying to break in. Gosh, can I transfer departments???

    What I've found is that the bean counters don't know jack about IT, which is why they ask us how to save money in the realm of What We Do. They don't teach IT fundamentals in an MBA program - they teach accounting, management case studies, business law, etc...

    Except that I went from well paying job with NO undergrad degree, quitting and going back to school getting my undergrad degrees. I'll wind up with CS and Math.

    Some things to expect:

    Expect that you'll be mentally rusty, but it shakes off after about a month. IOW, you'll have to study hard at first.

    Your maturity will serve you well.

    Your experience will serve you well.

    Take it easy on your nest egg (if you have one)... it disappears quickly.

    First of all - Bravo to your answer. That guy reminds me of the occasional A-hole you find on the openBSD list.

    I'm also a CS/Math (returning to school after 9 years in IT) student and thought that Fedora Core X would make a great OS for any small business... from the desktop to the servers.     I'm a student here. Anyway, we have Linux and Windows labs, laptops you can check out in the Library, wireless connectivity in the buildings, wired dorms, webmail, and complete online administrative control (unless we need a sig to register for a class). We also have a VERY serious Math dep't. I'll miss this place when I graduate... back to finals prep now.

I, too, quit a six-figure job to go back to school to get a CS and Math degree because it was really obvious to me that if I wanted to go on to bigger and better jobs, then I would have to be Pedigreed. To whomever reads this post: don't be swayed by the few degree-less wonders out there. Stay the course and stay in school.
