I think Apple is more organized when launching a new OS , Microsoft is jas noisy as any makle, loud and with bragging rights but has premature ejaculation problems.
Would you consider buying a new PC with XP installed after Vista hits the shelves?
Simple answer...YES.
And if Dell (for one example) is anything like they have been in the past, you will be able to CHOOSE XP as your OS of choice for at least a little while, although I'm sure it'll default your OS to Vista.
That said, I build all my systems, but if I were to go with Dell/HP/Gateway/etc. I would choose XP, period.
Sorry, but your understanding of Linux is about a decade out of date. On Linux, you just select "Install Software" from the System menu and click on the package(s) you want. That's it.
Sure...*IF* the package you want is already available in a pre-packaged form for your distro.
I really like Linux a lot, but it has a LONG way to go before being as simple as you describe for EVERYTHING you would want.
That being said...I also like Windows (HOLY SHIT...THE HORROR...SOMEONE LIKES LINUX ***AND*** WINDOWS??!?!?!?!?!?!?!? You can't do that on/.!!!!!) It has it's strengths and its weaknesses...but so does Linux...and so does OS/X.
One other point, which is not directed towards you, is that everyone goes on about how everything is available in other forms for Linux. No, that is not true. Also, if I'm COMFORTABLE using the program in Windows...and I've already *PAID* for it...I don't want to go to some other piece of software (free or pay) and relearn when what I have already WORKS FOR ME.
Most of the postings telling people "Leave windows...go to Linux" just don't take that into account. There are people (like myself) who already have invested a LOT of money in software that we use on a daily basis. (Not all people on/. are pirates.) Many of these programs are not available on Linux. Am I supposed to just say "Fuck windows...I'm going to go use Linux...even though this $300 package won't work that I need...and oh yeah...this $100 program won't run either...and, oh yeah...most of the games I want to play won't work..." Yeah...that sounds like a GRAND idea to me.
Let me preface this by saying I am 100% against DRM.
Please explain the "horribleness" of the DRM on the Playstation 3? I don't see why DRM implemented on a closed system matters? You put a game disc in, it plays. BFD.
My God...am I the *ONLY* person who can't stand rumble? The *FIRST* thing I do when I start a game and it starts vibrating the controller in my hand is...go to the menu...turn that shit *OFF* and continue the game.
Not buying a console because it's overly expensive? Common sense...
Not buying a console because the fucking CONTROLLERS DON'T VIBRATE?!?!? Stupid. (IMHO)
I think this is a great idea, personally. Compatibility stays 100%, and if you want to uninstall a program, it's back to DOS days...delete the folder it's contained in. You've deleted everything. No problem of "This shared library might be used by 10,000 other programs...do you wish to delete?" Dumb luser presses "Yes" by ACCIDENT...many programs stop working. (Yes, I realize there's the whole registry issue...but if programs are written correctly, they should be able to clean up the registry pretty easily.)
The only problem I see with this is that you'd have programs potentially running older dll's with security holes in them...but there could at LEAST be a window that pops up letting you know this when starting the program, or some such.
> Wrong. Vinyl deteriorates with plays. CDs have a shelf life of 70+ years regardless of usage.
Riiiiiight....that's why I've got quite a few CD's of approximate 10 year age that can't be played any longer...and it's not because they weren't taken care of, either. They aren't scratched to hell...in fact they've got very few scratches at all if any. Hold them up to a nice bright light and guess what?? You can see all sorts of nice holes through them. Get enough of those holes and gee...it don't play no more.
I've seriously been wondering when advertisers would start figuring out how to create actual blipverts...
I guess if people start exploding, we'll know.
If only they had...I had an Amiga and only switched to an "IBM Compatible" PC once it was thrown away by Commodore (and it was a while after that, actually).
Loved the computer...would be using it still if I only had the desk space.
If I were to name my top 5 games of all time, I'd have trouble figuring out 4 of the 5, but one of them would *HAVE* to be M.U.L.E. Awesome game...had more fun playing this game with friends than I can remember with most other games.
Get me some Crystite!!!
Doubleback...as in the game on the Color Computer? I *LOVED* that game...I wish a similar game with it's simplicity and addictiveness would be available on the PC.
If this were a Windows PC, everyone of you would be jumping all over this...
But it's an Apple, so let's make every POSSIBLE excuse as to why the it can't be Apple's fault, that Apple is such a GREAT company...blah blah blah...
I'm sure I'll be modded to Troll, but this had to be said.
Could you rephrase that in English, please?

MULE is only fun with several players...single player MULE just is NOT the same.

I must be missing something, here.
Wait...if you're true arcade geek, you'd build your own arcade cabinet for all your MAME needs.
:)
I did.
On what planet does "Too Long/Didn't Read" get pushed to Score: 2???
Oh wait...I forgot...this is Slashdot.

Uhhh....am I the only one who thought "WTF?" after reading the above?
Having spent hundreds of hours on Doubleback

2GB is enough to store almost 7 days of UNCOMPRESSED cd quality digital audio: 2^31 bytes / (44,100 * 2) bytes per second...
Really?? Hmm...then how come when I digitize audio at 44.1k...I get only 4 HOURS of uncompressed audio in that space?!?!?! Methinks you are not right.
Pardon for being a spelling nazi...but HOLY SHIT, BATMAN!!! "redention as human beens"??
I would *THINK* you meant "REDEMPTION as human BEINGS"...
Then again, maybe you meant "human beans"...but we may never know.
While I can forgive you for redemption...the other is fucking ridiculous!

5. Why doesn't the kill -9 equivalent always work?
Probably for some of the same reasons kill -9 doesn't always work in Linix/Unix/etc.
