The world is not black and white, sometimes "conservatives" hold "liberal" positions and vice versa. Stop trying to label people and instead focus on the actual topic.
Yeah, but Harper and his pals don't have to tolerate being leaned upon. if they had any backbone (which we know they don't, how quickly they folded over the softwood lumber issue) they would tell the American MAFIAA to "take off, eh".
Does anyone use the Quicktime player at all? What does it do that mplayer or VLC doesn't (besides having a terrible user interface and no support for Linux)?
How does this have any relevance, let alone "insight"? The article is not advocating the elimination of all proprietary software, it is talking about the lack of transparency when using proprietary software as a component of mathematical proofs.
Your criticism rings hollow. Over the years, "average" users have had to learn all sorts of difficult workarounds to use with Windows when things didn't work 100% the way Microsoft intended. In my experience with computer-phobes, switching them to Linux has resulted in less "help my computer isn't working" phone calls than leaving them with Windows does.
How is the parent post a troll? If the moderators disagree with what the guy is saying, they should post, not hide and snipe cowardly using moderator points.
The uptime on my MythTV box is 133 days. I haven't touched the software for over a year, because it works fine and I don't want any of the new features. When I want to watch a show, I click TV->Watch Recordings and then select what I want to watch, and when commercials come up, a couple of presses of the "Fordward" button on my remote (configured to skip ahead 30 seconds) is all it takes to skip them. If I want to watch a DVD, no problem, play a game or two (kids love the old SNES games), no problem. Listen to my MP3/OGG collection, no problem. It all just works.
You do realize that the CURRENT generation of POWER5+ CPU's are already quad-core, right? Honestly, guys, you all need to read up on what makes POWER different from PowerPC. One is a server or workstation class chip, the other is a desktop class one.
Early on in the lawsuit, Daniel Lyons writing for Forbes heavily backed SCO against IBM, however like SCO they cited no evidence to back up the claim that Linux developers stole code from Unix and put it into Linux. They simply assumed that since the people behind the SCO suit were successful with lawsuits in the past they would be successful again.
And of course like many of us called it back in 2003, SCO's stock first skyrocketed on the hype from articles like Forbes' and then plummeted as it has become public knowledge that their case is completely without merit. Naturally those people in on the action early cashed out early and big, leaving the pointy hairs' who listened to Forbes holding the bag. So they may well have had some level of credibility in 2003, but the zealots wearing the blinders at Forbes called it wrong, and they didn't miss by a hair, they missed by a mile.
Indeed, Canada is actually a lot slower implementing environmental protection laws than the USA is. Despite our countries reputation as environmentally conscious, we are primarily still a resource based economy, which means public policy still favours economic interests over environmental ones.
Right, because as we all know here on slashdot, comments posted anonymously on a web page are always factual and accurate.
Nice ad hominem attack. So why should we respect your opinion over that of journalists and professors of law?

Standard operating procedure for the Conservatives.

There is also duplicity.

You should all be so lucky.

The iPhone os is not open source. If you are going to list it there, you should also list Windows Mobile.
Online Rights Canada, sponsored by the EFF
The Kamloops/Thompson district in BC made the switch and runs on all open source now.
I assume those numbers also include the copy I received (and promptly wiped) when I bought my new Thinkpad.
You better not be impugning the dignity of our REAL currency.
What hardware in particular?
I'd like to encourage anyone and everyone who has a piece of hardware not supported by Linux to report it to the LinuxDriverProject.

According to the specifications from Nokia's site, you are correct. That is disappointing, but not a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, but Bill Gates is giving all his money to charity, so that makes it okay.

Because they can.
You're young, start your own company and then SELL it to Google or Microsoft.
