Hmm I guess you don't have the flash plugin installed (or atleast not the flash player 9, which is needed to display flex and the new flash content). It should be easily installed on visiting the page if you are on the windows platform (can't say what is the state of compatibility of the newer flash players with Linux as I have been away from it for a while). If flash player 9 has no support for linux yet then I agree that there is a problem with those websites in the sense that those features can not be done using an older version of flash framework which are available to a larger set of people (but in that case also I am sure that the new player will soon be available for linux considering how Adobe is pushing flex for Linux)
No, I don't think you are a troll but if the reason turns out to be that a plugin was not(/can't be) installed then I don't think its fair to criticize those websites just because they did not work on your system.
Too bad you are just coming out as a troll saying "X sucks because I saw it here and here and it was annoying blah blah". Flash is not suited for all types of websites but luckily that thing was understood years ago by anyone working on the "web thingy".
If you actually pull your head out of the sand then you will see that people have actually started making good content using flash and the fugly era of shiny flash intros for websites is dead for the most part. Maybe you may want to take a look at Yahoo! Maps, Harley website, Picnik or the rest of the bunch where the flex framework is actually being put to good use. But I suppose its easier to just bitch about how the things were a decade back without even checking if anything has changed now.
Disclaimer: I have worked on the flash projects in the past and currently getting into flex for a new project so I maybe a bit biased.
I agree with those who have pointed out that getting a $600 console just for this game (or any game for that matter) seems very unlikely as far as the family market is concerned but I agree with the overall point of that article that LittleBigPlanet may turn out to be a console pusher.
To start with, I am single, earning a decent pay check. I have never owned a console and am thinking about getting a Wii next month. Now that aside, ever since I have seen the trailers of LittleBigPlanet, I can't wait to get my hands on that game. I will buy PS3 (most probably after I am done with Wii) just to play that particular game because right now I can afford to blow money on the most ridiculous of stuff. I am sure I am not alone in that category and that is why I think this game could turn out to be the Halo for PS3.
This thread made my day. I decided to reply to Taco's post instead of posting a new one in the thread because..well its not like you get a chance like this everyday:)
I was introduced to/. back in 99 when I had just cleared my undergrad entrance exam and was beginning to read around the tech sites a bit. I don't remember how or why I got here but I kept getting back to it for some reason. Made one id which I don't even remember now (is there a way to get the forgotten ID back if I can give out all the possible email addresses I may have used in registering it?) Created this one a few years back and have been trolling ever since.
I have nothing new to add to the wonderful posts in this thread but just wanted to say "Thanks for everything". Here is to the next 10 years.
What the grandparent post is saying is that you might not have a full sentence, nor might a full sentence even provide sufficient information to perform the translation accurately.
I think you are missing the point a bit. A native Japanese speaker will not have any problem understanding the japanese sentence even with the insufficient context(from the perspective of say an Englishman) but he will have problem with a sentence of similar sort which is in English even if he understands english quite well. The level of difficulty will depend upon his understanding of the other language. There comes a point in one's progress in a foreign language when instead of thinking in the mothertongue and translating it into the new language, we start thinking in the new language itself when dealing with it. That is the level where translation to our primary language becomes almost trivial(barring all the language based limitations ofcourse).
Maybe the future machines will come with some sort of "Mode" for different languages so that they start "thinking" in the language which they are supposed to be translating to the "primary language" just by toggling a couple of switches.
You got that exactly right. I would have modded you up if you were not already +5. Btw, you should have been modded 'Insightful' instead of 'Informative', but oh well.
Well, everyone knows that, actually anyone with an inkling of sense knows that Nuclear Power will play an important role in satisfying the energy demands of the future. Now, my question is this:
Why a country which has oil as the biggest(only?) source of income trying to develop alternative energy sources is evil only because it can be used by the radical elements to create a nuclear weapon somehow? Yeah I understand the situation with all the flashy rheoterics flying about but, from their point of view, they are taking a step in the right direction to safeguard the future when the oil runs out. Moreover, even all the oil in their land will not be able to do certain tasks (say power a space mission in some distant future) unless they have a better energy source. We like to point out their seemingly backwards looking policies and rules but when they do something like working on a nuclear reactor, its suddenly dangerous, too dangerous to let them handle it.
I am not trying to troll but can someone please point out the justification for it without getting into any religious tirade. (We can leave the whole issue of whether getting nukes does or does not give any country a sort of bargaining power or not, if that troubles anyone)
Disclaimer: No, I am not from Iran. (I am not even a muslim, not that it matters or should matter)
Those spouting the psychobabble bullshit points about playing a transgendered character in a game, please keep your own biases/insecurites to yourself. People play whatever they want to play because that seems more fun to them for N number of reasons. Heck, you don't even have to go the RPG route with a fully dolled up female character.
I remember back in college when 'Quake 3 Arena' was the most popular thing on the LAN and the gf of one of the players was trying to learn the game just to spend some time with her bf and generally have fun. I was one of the better players in the college and it was a hassle to get into a game where rest of the top tier ones were not present because either the server won't start because the teams were considered imbalanced, or they will simply kick me out because well no one likes getting killed 15 times in 5 min just because the other one has even less life than him. Anyway, I got to know about this girl and started using her name to play in general servers. I started all clueless (standing still and shooting totally off the mark) and most of the other players just used to blast a rocket in my direction from time to time, dance around me and tried to chat me up(after the usual "lol j00 will get killed if you stand like that"). They even started giving me tutorials on how to play better and stuff.
The fun part came when 'the poor clueless chick' suddenly started connecting more shots than they expected. First they laughed it off ("nice!"), then got a bit uneasy ("You still there or is someone else playing?"), and finally plain angry and bitter ("Wtf! WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU! I BET YOU ARE NOT <insert name>! How the fuck did you rail me 10 times in a row? When did you learnt to do strafe jump? I DID NOT TEACH YOU THAT!") but it was still damn funny because you could still tell them to mind their language and they had to just stfu because there was still the possibility that I was actually the real girl and calling me names will really not go well.
Did this for a month before I got bored. Fun times!:)
Oh yeah. I remember that anime. It starts off a bit slow but gets interesting later on. Pretty accurate picture of a popular MMO (though with a better graphics thrown in). I wouldn't mind playing something like that where there are a unique paths to be taken instead of just following the herd.
Oh come on. Morality always depends upon the players involved in any particular situation.

Totally agree. I have been using FireFox+NoScript ever since it came out and I highly recommend that add-on. It just gets better and better with every version. With the last one there wasn't even a need to install a seperate flash blocker.
Oh and I am currently at a cafe surfing on a customized windows system (XP SP2). Sure enough the address book exploit worked as reported. Didn't even try the other one. Bah! Can't wait to get a net connection back home as soon as possible.
You guys are so dense. Arsenic this and UFO that. Pffft! Just look at the pictrue in that article. Doesn't it remind of another very VERY famous picture of similar nature? Goddammit! Do you want me to actually explain it? On/.? Really? The link under that pic says "Enlarge this" How is that for a hint?
You mean like what happened to all the buggy drivers after all those newfangled things called 'cars' became popular? Or what impact electic fans had on people who used to pull the heavy sheet on the roof with a rope to provide something similar for those who can afford to keep them? Or how the electric bulbs nearly killed the oil lamp industry? Or...
Hehe that reminds me, when I got my first proper job I was sitting at a presentation where the PHB was drawing a chart on the whiteboard explaining how his new idea will make the product sell like hot-cakes. He said something like, "The concept is so simple, yet so addictive that our sales are sure to grow exponentially" and drew a straight line at 45 degrees to the axes. Now I was just out of college so I said instantly "But thats not exponential growth. Its linear." I remember the embarrassing silence that followed to this very day. (He actually cleaned the board and said "Thats not the point. The idea is...")
Professor: Suppose there is a sugar cube sitting on the table which will vanish in 10 min, and a group of ants is moving towards it at a speed c1. They are passing over a miniature treadmill which sits just next to the sugar cube. So little Johnny, can you tell what should be the minimum angular speed of the treadmill rollers(radius=r1) so that the ants can't cross it to reach the sugarcube?
Johnny: Wtf? Who has miniature treadmills on tables? and why the hell even bother with it? Just crush the stupid ants! And how the hell can a sugarcube just "vanish"? It can melt and evaporate but not vanish ffs! Seriously professor, Experience matters too.
You missed his point. He was not saying that the machines will not decide that they don't need us. All he was saying that its not necessary that they will come to that decision. There is a difference.
Also, wasn't there an incident where Mr. Knuth went to meet someone (some bigshot at an institute) and he got up to shake his hands saying, "Mr. Knuth! Its a pleasure to meet you. I have read all your books!" and Donald Knuth shook hands, smiled and said "You are lying".
Can't remember where I read that but maybe somone else can cite a relevant source.
There is nothing called a truth value. The truth we all talk about is the one which is believed by the majority. You can read anything anywhere, watch anything anywhere, hear anything anywhere and still it may or may not be the elusive "Truth" you are searching for.
Wikipedia gives/(aims to give) you nothing more than the most generally accepted truth in most cases. If its the result of the free time tinkering by a bunch of vandals then that is what the citation links are for. If you can't trust the citation links or can't be bothered with even checking those links then why blame wikipedia? If you can believe anything showed on tv and anything you read on newspaper without even bothering to double-check their 'facts' then give wikipedia credit for giving you that option at least.
