  1. The summary didn't say anything about... on Microsoft, Blizzard Crack Down On Piracy, Cheating · · Score: 1

    ... Blizzard and piracy.

I was really disappointed that Blizzard might be involved in that, they have been the most progressive company lately, going so far as to offer unprotected freely down loadable versions of their old (previously protected) games on the internet.

They even let you download the Mac version of a game if you already have a PC serial number.

And LAN games don't pay attention to the serial number.

I eagerly await the new Diablo and Starcraft, and fully expect to buy full-price copies of both if they continue this policy. (Full price is something I haven't done for a while, I usually wait for the price to drop and the required hardware to get cheap...)

  2. Re:Strange Complaints on Why Developers Are Switching To Macs · · Score: 2, Interesting

Not even a comparison. Windows swapping is medium, but Mac's is Horrific. It would completely shut down the computer when anything interesting happened, and you have no control over it. Try running a .5gig machine with less than a gig of disk space and to ANYTHING. At least on a PC you can fix your swap space.

Of course, the fix was $99 for 4gig ram--I haven't had a problem since!

Linux, by the way, is the other end of the spectrum. Smooth, clean swapping that allows you to do just about anything with very little memory. You'd expect the Mac to perform more like a Unix--maybe I could have it set up and use a swap partition--honestly I never even thought about that.

Note, according to the vote summary, 3/5 people have trouble with Windows suspend/resume (I know, only people with points can vote, but it should still lead to a fairly reasonable random sampling).

I'd say even 1/5 is too many (heck, any failures of major system functions are too many!)--imagine now if the OS was built to ALWAYS use it. 3/5 computers failing forever, and probably more because I bet even the 2 that voted saying their system worked have small glitches they "Forgive and Forget" every few months...

I wonder how many products could get away with a 3/5 failure rate of a major feature...

Maybe it's just dell that can't do it right? Or vendors that overwrite Microsoft's handling and break it? Do you have any advice?

  5. Exciting on Boot Windows Vista In Four Seconds · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've virtually NEVER had windows work reliably after a hibernate/resume. I acknowledge that there is probably a hardware/software combination out there that can do it, but I've never encountered one.

For me, things just get unstable, and after 2 or 3 hibernates without a full shutdown, the whole system fails (if it didn't fail on the first resume).

So although this may work on a pristine install, the thought of owning one of these after a few patches from Microsoft, installing an anti-virus and a few drivers would scare the living crap out of me.

Reliable suspend alone is the justification I used (to myself) to move to the Mac.

How about a vote? I'm willing to wager a little karma on it. If you have a similar experience, mod me up--if windows suspend/resume works perfectly for you, mod me down.

There is no reason I can imagine that the bittorrent protocol HAS to be worse than any other one as long as the packet order is chosen correctly. You could even add a variable to the torrent to indicate when the last packet will be delivered to the cloud (so that a late-starter can more accurately calculate a start time).

Cars are the same way. You don't just wake up at 16 (or 18, or 25) fully ready to drive responsibly, you kinda grow into it somewhere between 22 and 50 (Perhaps later for some, probably not earlier for many).

You can't be kept off the road until you're 50, so maybe something like this can help. Actually I think a better idea might be a black box, the ability to review exactly where the car was and how fast it moved (I know there are already devices like this) and if your kid doesn't like it--he doesn't have to drive your car!

The machine could print fake info first of all, so it would HAVE to be something I see and validate. Since it has to be a public record, it can't be tied to me by any kind of key though--so after it's printed it out for me to see, there is no saying that it doesn't print a second or third line for another candidate at some other time...
