I don't really care what their supposed motivations were. If the law is wrong than it doesn't really matter if it's not applied, even for the wrong reasons.
If drug dealers cause other problems then bust them for that assuming they are behaving in a way that is illegal.
It is "unjust" to want to not be harrassed? It is "unjust" to not want criminals hanging around your neighborhood? It is "unjust" to want criminals to be dealt with??
But anyone who only ever deals drugs isn't a criminal in my book and that's the goddamn point. If the problem is assault then get them for that. Not some drug charge.
I'll tell you what I wish I had told the hold-outs: "I hope you have a problem with drug dealers in your neightborhood. I hope you call the cops. I hope the dealer(s) gets arrested, put on trial, found Not Guilty, and put right back out on the streets by a juror just like you.
It bloody depends on what they did. If they sold cannabis or whatever that's not really a problem. If they behave illegally in other ways then the drug charge is superfluous.
And when that dealer busts in your door looking for 'who done ratted me out', maybe, just maybe, then you'll understand.
I am unlikely to rat someone out. I don't consider a decision to sell a substance that happens to be illegal as a crime.
It might happen if it was a case of battery or destruction of prooperty. But then the problem wouldn't be the drugs now would it?.
Yeah the corporations are all corporationy and it's destroying the world somehow.
There is not a finite amount of wealth in the world (yet). There was a time when everyone was equally poor and thanks to industrialization and specialization we got rich. Somehow the west got wealthy without making Africa into a giant hole in the ground. If your theory is correct then we could not have gotten where we are today without depriving some other continent of wealth. Please tell me which continent we used up to bootstrap the industrialization.
If you don't think you're benefiting from globalization then you need to open your eyes. Everything costs less that it used to due to more free trade and greater specialization and the absolute poverty continues to subside even without accounting for population increase (I think).
I'm sorry if the above is incoherent but it's three AM here and I was about to go to bed.
The last example you put forth is an example of the jury system working not the opposite. Drug laws suck for all intents and purposes. They do nothing good and have major negative effects. Being able to fuck over a law that is unjust as a juror can be a good thing. And in this case it was.
I personally do it because I consider scarceness to be a prerequisite for property. Unfortunately anything digitized is no longer scarce if it gets out even once. I believe they have the rights to extract money as best they can but not with a government granted monopoly. If they want they can use as much DRM as they want but without any protection from the law. If that leads to problems for some content then so be it. If the users/consumers don't want to pay then there will be less time for the artist to perform his art if at all.
Privacy when taking a dump seems to be a fairly recent phenomenon. At least in northern Europe. If you look at the toilets (whatever they're called in English when there's no water)they have a row of several seats. I've seen up to eight or ten "seats" in old school latrines.
If you read All Quiet on the Western Front you'll notice that the main characters spend a fair amount on the latrine together taking a dump.
I'm not saying it isn't nice to take a dump in privacy but there is no need for it.
I've read alot of Asimov's book and I'm sure that the phrase he coined was "roboticist" not robotics. At least that's what he says in one of the robot anthologies. He may have coined both but I've only seen him claim roboticist.
I for one never looks through any files I don't need to if I'm fixing a computer. If the neighbor or whatever is sitting by me (more of a lesson than fixing) I always ask before I open any file if I want to show something. I never go into any directories that might contain any private stuff. Hell I even type really fast when I enter URL:s so there's less chance that I might see anything through autocomplete even by accident. I do not want to know.
Capitalism:
2 dictatorships: Chile and perhaps China after Deng Xiaoping. Wonderful progress in those two countries in spite of the dictatorships. Good progress in all other capitalistic countries which also happen to be democracies. Also don't forget that Pincohet actually bloody resigned without a counter revolution and left a country that is substantially better off than its neighbors. The jury is still out on China though.
Communism/socialism: Cuba, CCCP, China under Mao and Cambodia. Hundreds of millions dead, destroyed economies and not one single democracy among them.
To compare those two ideologies as if they were even close to each other is such bullshit that it makes me sick. Perhaps you should start offering excuses for national socialism as well. I mean it didn't kill more than 5-10% of the ammount socialism/communism did and according to you Socialism is about the same as capitalism. National socialism isn't half bad by those standards. If a theory has evil consequences every time it's implemented is it not evil by default?
Could you tell me why New Jersey is always taking shit? I am not an American so I don't know what's so wrong about that state. I don't know how many times I've seen New Jersey getting compared to hell in sitcoms and animated shows. I don't get why though.
I was using heavy sarcasm against the parent. The reason we aren't having famines in the western world is part free market and part industrialization.
I agree with you completely. To say that industrialization is bad in any other way than the shortest term is madness (it may also be Sparta according to a recent documentary I saw).
I've seen two keyboards go wonky from water. One case where I got a little drunk and pured about 100ml of water into the numpad area and didn't notice it. And another which got beer spilled over it and was promptly given a thorough wash. Both had part their conductive surfaces discolored and rendered useless.
If I was going to clean a keyboard in the dishwasher I would remove the innards first. It's a fairly trivial thing to do but might take a while. I would say there are eighteen or so screws in the logitech models I've seen. But beware of the cheap keyboards with idividual rubber domes. They are a nightmare to reassemble.
I would say that it's the falling cost of memory that is the greatest justification for modularity. Buy exactly what you need today and get much more memory later for less money.
I live in the archipelago just outside of Stockholm and I currently have 8/1 ADSL and could get 24/1 if I wanted to. It's a fairly small island with about 200 permanent families but with lots of summer homes. If you live in some serious backwaters I don't think you could get ADSL. In the suburbs (more like sprawl) around Stockholm broad band penetration is good.
This is all anecdotal as I haven't seen any numbers. But I was the last person to get ADSL in my social circle. I think we got ADSL out here in 2003 which is pretty goddamn late.
The Island located between Vaxholm and Varmdö. I'm not sure if you can find it with a text search on google maps or whatever.
I may have that recording. That's one of the few classical songs that I really would like to see more compressed. You turn the volume way up on the quiet parts because you're so used to flat music and then the goddamn cannon try to blast your eardrums out. It's a wonderful piece as long as you don't abuse the knob.
It's called "Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra - Erich Kunzel - [Tchaikovshy 1812 Overture - Telarc 1979 Digital Recording #01] 1812" in my playlist. Wikipedia confirms that Eric Kunzel was one of the first to actually use cannon as intended by the composer.
Are people really this retarded? I'm currently supporting three total computer noobs and none of them has had any problems in six month at the least and a year at the most. I install firewalls, antispyware, Firefox and Thunderbird. Then I give them some general guidelines of what to do and what not to do. Not very support intesive at all. Please note that this is the kind of newbies that think you're some kind of wizard because you know the keyboard shortcut for copy and paste, the kind that twitches whenever you use a shortcut and wonder what just happened.
Then we have the Internet gaming friends who know enough to fuck their computers up but generally know how to fix them themselves if you just tell them what programs to download. I can't really se the kind of newbie that isn't afraid to destroy things and still has the ability to seriously destroy their installation over and over.
Lingonberries contain vast amounts of what I thought was sodium benzoate but appears to be benzoic acid. I'm not sure if some of the benzoic acid turns to sodium benzoate but I'm not a chemist. Does this report mean that lingonberries are bad for you?
ATM I've got about 25 tabs open and Firefox is using 148MB. But I do close it several times a day because it can be set to save the tabs you have open. Before that you could use an extension for the same functionality. The only reason I can think of for not closing FF is loading streaming video and not wanting to reload the data. If you're not doing that just close the goddamn program when it's not needed.
I've got the Adblock plus, video downloader, RIP, linkification, gmail, distrust, dict, quick note and filterset g updater extensions installed and running currently.
Pick up a piece of lettuce and try to pronounce the ingredients in that. Kudos to you if you can even pronounce everything correctly.

I was going to post this as AC but fuck it.
Thank you.

So it is the US fault that the Cuban government imprisons political opponents? Pray tell how the US accomplishes such a thing.
But that has nothing to do with the parent. He stated facts about Cuba that has absolutely nothing to do with the US.
Who the hell moderated this flamebait?
Can someone who agrees that this is flamebait please tell me why they consider it flamebait?

I agree with you completely. To say that industrialization is bad in any other way than the shortest term is madness (it may also be Sparta according to a recent documentary I saw).
Yes, the numbers are clear. Industrialization causes famine.
