  1. cut riaa off from the net on Legalizing Attacks on P2P Networks · · Score: 5, Interesting

Simple solution. Totally black list any riaa sites from the rest of the net. Enter their ips on the major backbone routers, and blackhole their traffic. Think about it, you dos someone, and we blackhole 100% of your traffic. No email, no vpn's, no nothing for you riaa pigs. A dos attack is an abuse of the net. And if the fascists want to abuse the net, then they simply dont need it. And i think its likely that the riaa WOULD get their net nuts cut off if they started this crap, simply because a dos is against any kind of TOS (terms of service) in existance. If your uunet, exodus, etc, would you tolerate that kind of crap on your network? i sure as hell wouldnt.

I've ordered at least $20k in parts from both places in the past 2-3 years, and both are honest reliable places with decent rma policies. I hear mwave.com is decent too, though i've never dealt with them.

More importantly, you need some technical resources. www.pcguide.com covers a LOT of good overall system information. Spend a few hours there at least.

Also very important, and often overlooked by do it yourselfers......is bios setup. www.rojakpot.com/Speed_Demonz/BIOS_Guide/BIOS_Guid e_Index.htm is a must read for optimizing your bios. This can make the difference between a stable box and a box that crashes every 10 minutes.

Last thing, i want to go to //rant mode=on
People who say dell, gateway, etc, are cheaper are ordering their parts from the wrong places. If you order all your stuff from axion or newegg, your gonna spend a lot less then a equalivent box from dell. Dont get me wrong, dell has great support (which is why i often point business or home users i dont want to support to dell). But if you feel you can take care of yourself, by all means do it yourself.
    //rant mode=off

    Good luck :)

Tom Clancy movies have a BAD habbit of being utterly massacred and turned into crappola compared to the books (The one exception being the Hunt for Red October, which i felt to be pretty decent). Now i know its hard to impossible to make a movie that follows a book perfectly. But after the foul taste of "clear and present danger", which was so far different from the book as to barely deserve the same title as the book, I dont have much hope for future clancy movies. 5. Windows 2000 - what its really suitable for on IBM Kernel Hackers Respond · · Score: 2

Windows 2k professional makes for a pretty good WORKSTATION os. IT doesnt crash very often, has a good IP stack, and a lot of apps availible for it. Windows 2000 Server is a bloated, buggy, mediocre hack of 2k professional. It tacks on a pile of services and builds them deeply inside the OS instead of treating them like daemons /normal programs that linux/unix does. And thats why Windows sucks so badly as a server. In unix/linux, if your dns/samba/whatever daemon bombs, it just bombs, it doesnt usually take out the kernel, the ip stack, other services, etc. With win2k server and active directory, if one thing goes, the whole taco goes boom.

One thing though regarding the low disk space = server crash problem. Did you enable user qouta's? Did you separate the OS partition from the share's partition? No matter what OS your running for a server, you should always separate your OS from your data.

In tom's review, clonecd was not able to handle the safedisk 2.51 (the disk2 cd) copy protection. If you check the clone cd compatibility page ( http://elby.ch/english/products/clone_cd/writers/ L.html ), you'll notice a "correct efm encoding" heading. Any burner that has two stars (well actually sheep) under this heading can handle safedisk 2.51 with no problems WITHOUT the use of clonecd's amplify weak sector feature, as the burner itself handles this at a hardware level. I have personally tested this on my computer, backing up Medal of Honor, using a liteon 163-dvd drive as the source drive and a liteon 24102b as the writer. I used Clone Cd 4.013. Tom's also used a liteon 24102b and was unable to copy safedisk 2.51 . I am not sure what they did wrong, but i suspect the source drive might of been the problem.

Then install the backup device of your choice to the server and backup the data as needed / desired. To prevent the users from screwing with their profiles, make the profiles mandatory by renaming the ntuser.dat to ntuser.man in the user profile (which if i recall, is in the active directory users and computer tool on win2k server).

  10. why i cheer amd on First Benchmarks of AMD Hammer Prototype · · Score: 5, Interesting
    Quick background:

I am a long time system designer /upgrader / hardware IT geek. I've been working on Amd /Intel boxes since the 386 days. One reason why I cheer for Amd is that in the past few years, Intel seems bent on dragging all of us back into the 286 days of hardware being propeirty. Slot 1, Rdram memory interfaces, etc. Amd seems to have more of a commitment to sticking to industry standards, like (at the time) socket 7, sdram, ddr, etc.

Another reason why i tend to prefer Amd is the cynical marketing processor known as the P-4. The vast majority of benchmarks show that unless your running software thats heavily SSE-2 optimized, the Athlon's spank the P-4. Yet the P-4's are much more $$$$ due to all those wonderful Intel commercials with dancing morons in bunny suits, or some smucks painted up like a martian with a bad head cold. Instend of wasting all that money marketing, use it to improve your designs! Amd spends virtually nothing on marketing, and yet whenever they have a good design, their products sell extremely well. And dont get me started on intel's late ddr support, or the earily 845 chipsets that were sdram only, which had PATHETIC performace.

I guess the point of my whole rant is......I use Intel or Amd, or whoever, as long as they give me a good value for my (or my customer's) dollar. Give me a nice industry standard design. Dont foist some new marketing propierty design on me. If its gotta be propierty, it better be for one of two reasons: Considerably cheaper, or considerably faster. Intel in the past few years has NOT focused on giving the customer value. Amd has. Give me a 1000 dollars, and I can build either an Intel box, or an Amd box thats 20% faster then the Intel box, and just as stable. (I dont buy the Amd isnt stable arguement, it all comes down to knowing your hardware and how to configure it properly for stable operation.)

When Intel returns to delivering a product that is worth the price Intel charges for it, I'll use Intel again. Until then, I'll continue to laugh at ridiculous marketing schemes and do my research on which product is the fastest for the least money.

Can 802.11b scale this far (or big enough to handle a good size man - thats metropolitan area network for you non networking types) ?
