If using the LPT, is there a problem with PWMing the LED directly? Just buffer it if you're worried about current draw. Seems to be the easiest way to do it from the computer and any semi competent programmer could whip up a computer input to PWM program in C in a couple minutes. Depending what the overall project goal is I suppose.

Not to be pedantic, but your correction, at least in symantics, is wrong. It IS bandwidth, and bandewidth IS data-transfer.

    Defined as:

    # The amount of data that can be passed along a communications channel in a given period of time.

They are both just data per time. You can have two restrictions on your bandwidth.

One beeing technical, say a maximum of 10 megabits per second.
A second more..economic? For example 100 gigabytes per month.

It doesnt cease to be bandwidth because you change the unit for time.

  15. Re:dupe? on Wireless Power Now A Reality · · Score: 1

Radio waves are alternating magnetic fields. The faster the field is alternated the more power it has and the further it travels.

Actually this is wrong. At least on the 'further it travels' aspect.

If you look up the calculation on loss as a electromagnetic wave travels, one of the components is 20log(f), f being the frequency. So as f goes up, so does loss in the same amount of distance.

Here is the full equation shamelessly taken from wikipedia.

    FreeSpaceLoss (dB) = 36.6 dB + 20*log[frequency(MHz)] + 20*log[distance(miles)]

So basically the further you get or the higher in frequency, the greater the loss.

You can off set this a bit because as the frequency goes up, the easier it is to get gain out of the same sized antenna. Get high enough and you can use parabolic dishes which really amps up the gain :D

Low frequency also has the advantage of having a much larger wave length, so the lower the frequency, the more objects such as buildings, mountains, etc become insignificant. Look at the atomic clock signal in Ft. Collins, Colorado. 60kHz and you can pick it up anywhere in northern america. Try this with 2.4 GHz!

Actually, the torrents you're referring to are old hat.

With DHT and multiple trackers a torrent is pretty much unkillable. Even if you have a lot of peers and no seeds, you usually have the entire file distributed throughout the peers and more seeds will be created.

For example on isohunt.com each torrent has maybe 5 (plus or minus) trackers associated with it. And DHT ensures that even if ALL of the trackers go down, peers will continue to find and download from each other.

It is a fairly robust download method, compared to something like http which relies on one single server or you're hooped.

That being said, more is better, and there is no reason not to augment torrent traffic with http/ftp, etc.
