..."I'll just buy a Samsung which are well priced and specced and play Ogg."
Indeed! I've had my Samsung YP-U2R (catchy huh?) a couple of years now and it still looks the business! I rip my CD's onto my PC as Ogg files because they really do sound better than MP3 (better bass I think), but not many MP3 players will play Ogg. I think this is ultimately, why the Ogg format isn't catching on. Surely the open-source Ogg codecs are free for MP3 player manufactures to incorporate into their products, so why don't they? It's not going to cost them anything is it?
Ein as the Taco Bell dog? Actually that will work better than trying to find a Corgi that can act.
I've owned a Corgi I'll tell you, there is no way you can get them to do anything they don't want to do. Besides a Corgi has many times the personality of Keanu Reeves and is in serious danger of up-staging the main actor.
But seriously, when western commercial (capitalist) software companies have been sued into oblivion over "patent infringements", we can rest assure that we can look to the east for free and cheap software.
I used to work for one of IBM's official repair vendors and spent 9 and a half years fixing Thinkpads (and PS Notes before them), and I can concour IBM Thinkpads were indeed 'built like tanks', much more overly engineered than anybody elses laptops (and I've seen them all). I'm not just talking about the cases but the circuits too. Also IBM had long warranties and kept stock of replacement parts (including plastics) for six years for each model. We also did IBM's warranty on the 701 (Butterfly) model, and we had to bend over backwards for the customers, and all Thinkpads had to go back to customers in as-good-as-new state even if we didn't receive them that way. Yes, scuffed or damaged plastics were replaced automatically and covered by the warranty. Of course this is back in the days laptops cost the price of a small car.
I don't know how Lenovo now looks after Thinkpad customers, but for my money there is only two brands I would consider when buying a PC laptop. Thinkpad and Sony (only because I didn't see many of them because they don't/didn't go wrong often.)
BTW, going back to the original story, I thought PC World ran diagnostics and anti-virus tools from Knoppix boot CDs? So whats their beef with installing Linux? Clueless jobs-worth me finks!
Article title should read, 'MS seeks patent on bad taste'.
BTW, whats Microsoft doing getting into the motor trade? Is this Bill's idea for pimping his 959?
I'm no marine biologist, but I understand some breeds of fish can change sex when there is an imbalance in their population. I also understand sharks are classified as fish. Could it not be possible that one of the other 2 female sharks, temporarily, switched sex???
Is M$ planning to produce a domestic version of the robots they currently use in their product development and programming divisions?;)
No seriously, picture it for a moment. They put out a robot which then, due to a bug or virus, kills your dog and mames the children, then have to issue a service pack to patch the fault! Doe's anyone remember that '80's film "Runaway"? That would make Gene Simmons character Ballmer wouldn't it? Eek, I've just seen the future and soiled myself!
Of course, they would have to intergrate the 3 laws of robotics, including a fourth law; "A robot must extort large amounts of cash from it's owner."
Do me a version of Vista with all your sh***y apps stripped out (Explorer, Messenger, Media player, etc., ie. a stock GUI OS* with networking enabled), and then sell it for less than the cheapest retail boxed version of Linux.
THEN I might just consider buying a copy!

Firefox Losing Its Way?

· Score: 1, Informative
Are you running Firefox on a new version of one of the more popular distros? I have noticed some newer distros are running services which you may not need (dare I say bloat). Also KDE 3.5 is more graphic intensive than previous.
Whilst I've noticed Firefox takes longer to load up under Linux, I have not observed Firefox *run* slower on my Linux boxes than my Windows box, and my Linux systems are older (and slower) hardware.
Good example, but I was thinking more like 'V for Vendetta'. Looks like 'V...' is becoming more prohetic every day.
Will somebody give Tony Blair the DVD for Xmas. He can watch it next year when he's out of office (or as Tony would say, not in power). (Of course that will be too late for him to put things right.)
I agree! Every new Windows upgrade has also required a system upgrade. Vista requires a Gig of RAM and a CPU over 1.4GHz to run happily I believe. PC makers are currently stock-piling shiny new systems in anticipation of the big release day. (Anybody else notice the recent increase in RAM and HDD prices?) Personally I run several old Linux boxes. My PC at work is a 120 MHz relic with 64MB of RAM, running Damn Small Linux with Firefox - perfectly adequate for surfing the web for semiconductor datasheet pdfs.
Nope, Microsoft is THE most un-greenist company on the planet IMHO. So folks, if you really have to upgrade to Vista and then find yourselves having to upgrade your PCs, don't bin your old box. Install Linux on them and hand them down to your kids, relatives or give them to charity or something.

I don't know if anybody has mentioned it yet, but personally, I'm still waiting for a Red Dwarf The Motion Picture.

Steve Ballmer was right. Linux IS communism!

Long live the revolution, comrades!

Ordered by the court to use Windows? Hell, if it was me, I'd rather they lock me and be some 400 pound gorilla's bitch before that happened.

I agree! But didn't they kill the cast off in the film Serenity?
Max Headroom surely was prophetic, but you must remember, we now live in the future!
My favourite line from Max Headroom goes something like "Do you know how good censorship is? No? Good isn't it."
This guy has just ripped off the 'Hudzen' android from Red Dwarf series 3 "The Last Day"!!!

This is what Ballmer wanted to happen!
Divide and conquer people!
Next thing, all the bots will be demanding their right to religion... http://www.reddwarf.nildram.co.uk/txt/thelastd.txt
Maybe we'll get a Ministry for Silly Robots ?

I wonder what Microsoft's coding for IE7 looks like?
I guess we'll never know!

Please don't throw working, perfectly usable PCs away. Thanks.
