I'm sure Tor would love to cut margins and sell all their content direct as does Baen in my original post, but their books get far more exposure being sold through the Kindle store or iBook store.

The masses are not geeks and nerds who will stray from their primary download source, even with sci-fi/fantasy books.

  4. DRM Free... from where? on Sci-Fi Publisher Tor Ditches DRM For E-Books · · Score: 1

This sounds great and all, but...

Would they really be able to convince Amazon or Apple or Sony to sell the books DRM free from their marketplaces?

One of the authors I read publishes through Baen books, DRM free (Or at least in multiple formats emailed to you), but you have to download from the Baen website because Amazon won't have any of it.

I suspect there will be a place you will be able to download DRM free TOR books, but from the markets themselves we'll still have DRM. Who knows though? TOR has some clout and some A list authors so they may be able to push their weight around.

By using the general term PC they shield themselves. Kinda like how Bathroom Tissue and Paper Towel companies compare themselves to "The other leading Brand" and not Bounty or Royal specifically.

    Confused?

So is that a scale of 1 (Good) to 10 (Bad)? Or 1 (Bad) to 10 (Good)?

I'd hope not, as I don't see how anyone could rate the new BSG bad. Of course Farscape fans have different tastes.

If you're a Farscape fan you'll enjoy SG1, especially the last 2 seasons, but it may not be hokey enough for you.

If you're a BSG fan you'll enjoy SG1, but it may not be gritty and dramatic enough for you, except a few episodes here and there.

Stargate would fall kind of in the middle, not hokey and not overly dramatic.

As the writers of the show have said:

"Stargate, unbeknownst to our fans, is actually a comedy... And thats what makes it so good!"

My scale: 1 Good to 10 Bad

    1: BSG
    2: Heroes
    3: Stargate SG1
    4: Stargate Atlantis

  17. MMORPGS - When you don't want to make a story on Firefly MMORPG Announced · · Score: 2, Insightful

This seems to be a running theme for TV shows and movies. The Studio execs don't want to spend the money or think that video games just can't handle a good story so they make a MMO without a solid storyline. Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Matrix, Firefly, the list goes on. The reason these series and movies did well, for the most part, was compeling stories. I know for some they just get sucked into the lore and they'll be happy with a bland repetitive facade of a game that esentially is the same as the others with tiny variation and a different theme. But some of us want stories. I send out a plea to Studio Executives. Please support in depth games with compeling stories! Let your writers work on the video game story lines. There is still a massive audience that like to play games with stories.

  18. Hire a writer on The Lameness of Warcraft · · Score: 1

Hire a writer to make weekly content that flows with the world. Integrate player actions into the story. Change things in the world based upon players actions. This is one of the reasons I don't play MMORPG's and stick to standard RPG's. To me, online RPG's have a complete lack of purpose where there may be baby step goals, but they keep dangling the carrot just out of reach and there will never be any resolution. Plus I don't have time to waste on such things. The MMO I would jump on would be one that has a weekly running story I affect and that I can play for a couple hours a night and not miss too much if I miss a day.

  19. App Servers? on Landscape Is Changing For Microsoft and Google · · Score: 1

Corporations will not want their data filtered out onto the internet, but developments in this area may lead back to a dummy terminal model. Corporations could run an application server that can serve the programs through a browser like interface. No need for loading any apps on the dummy terminals, no need for letting users load anything except that which the application server is serving up. With client side scripting taking half the weight and server side processing taking the other, the split makes it less taxing on the server.

  20. 3D Detracts from Productivity on Metaverse the Next Big Thing? · · Score: 1

The only way that 3D can be a benefit to productivity and multitasking is if it is completely immersive in a holodeck like fashion. If you could pop up websites to the left and right, or open up a view of the solar system that fills your entire field of vision 360 degrees then it would benefit in almost any environment. *In reality the bridge in start trek should have had a rotational 3 dimensional view of everything around the ship. When you pipe your 3d through a two dimensional element (Your monitor), you lose any advantage it offers. The only way a metaverse will develop is through existing 3d constructs such as MMORPGS and other realms like Second Life. It may take some people away from things like IRC and IM programs, but there will likely still be a place for those. IM programs and IRC are convenient, quick to load and easy to use while you're surfing the web, writing code and reading slashdot.

And this one was horrible) it takes far far less than 40 hours. I actually see a trend lately of publishers putting in lame stopgaps that extend game time to the expense of fun. The latest Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider have been the shortest games (that have a story) that I have played of late.

  23. Tax the Internet! on A Working Economy Without DRM? · · Score: 1

This would be the simplest solution.

    1) Tax the internet. At first very little, but as CDs, DVDs, etc sell less and downloads increase, the tax would go up

    2) Split the tax into various segments, movie, tv, commercial literature (ie books that would be printed) and distribute them accordingly

    3) Include voluntary exemption. If you as an individual or your business do not download media, you can be exempt from paying the tax, by your burden of proof. This would likelly be arranged by ISP records proving that there is no media traffic through your route and may include audits, much like financial accounting.

    4) Distribute accured tax based upon tracking of downloads. This would be up to the company producing goods to prove, much like financial accounting. And of course there would be audits and whatnot to make sure people don't fudge the numbers.

People may freak out about the suggestion about taxing the internet, but if implemented correctly this could work. And, I don't know about you, but I don't mind paying a slight increase more per month for my internet in exchange for free access to content of all kinds.

This would also open up the market for smaller production studios and artists to produce goods.
