I am a volunteer at a local electronics museum. We use tesla coils and van de graf generators for demonstrations. We learned long time ago that you don't use consumer hobby grade stuff for public demonstrations. During my three year (so far) tenure there, we went through three cheap van de graf generators before settling on one that is more institutional grade; costing about twice as much. That unit is still going strong.
Same goes with tools. Please don't get me going on Harbor Freight. Put it this way. A jewelry maker told me that he will not be caught dead inside a Harbor Freight store.
I feel left out. First there was darkness. Then there was C. Then there was the kernel. Then there was Linux. Then there was Android. Then, finally, there was light. Through the gift of C, the world can now see!
Thank you and you can still see them here in Bellingham, Washington and of course on my videos! I am making an average of 1 pair of new shorts per month.
I had a wonderful job at Intel as a security consultant.
But then I wanted to go back in time and work with real hardware that glows in the dark (vacuum tubes).
So I left Intel Jones Farm in Hillsboro Oregon to retire to Bellingham Washington and volunteer full time at the Spark Museum, where they have antique radios and electroncis.
So, I pirouetted off.
Here is a video of myself pirouetting out of Intel! Dancing at Intel
Many of you are too young for this and you don't know what you are missing . . .
Once upon a time a long time ago (1960's ish) Sears would publish the 'Christmas Year Book' their Christmastime catalog.
That was one druool maker! I would spend hours upon hours drooling all over that Christmas Wish Book! Wishing I could have all those wonderful toys that my family could not afford!
I was so happy that I was given the buy-out that I danced like a ballerina in the hallways of Intel's Jones Farm Campus as I left and started my retirement to Bellingham, Washington.
The cell phone stays at home. The laptop stays at home. My custom homemade clothing also stays at home. Anything of value (both hardware and data) is safely locked up at home.
I travel with one shoulder bag containing the absolute minimum clothing/toiletries that has less than $100 value.
My wallet stays in my pants pocket or on my bedside table when I am asleep. I double check everything (wallet in pocket, nothing left behind) when I leave the room.
I might as well leave the darn door open when I leave as I just don't care of the meager contents therein.
Hotel safes are also vulnerable as well as the rooms.
This will be the easiest for bicycles. Every bicycle serial number is stamped on the bottom bracket (which is the ares between the pedals). It faces down toward the street. All you need is a camera and LED embedded into the street aimed up. The serial number is right there, about 6 inches above the street level.
Something like this (diagram via ascii)

Please note that the camera and LED need good extensive cooling to withing Dubai summer heat, especially when embedded on un-shaded street. I would suggest placement on shaded streets.
Here in Bellingham, we have the Re Store. Not much in electronics, but great for old tools and building materials. I use them for the glass for my glass engraving hobby.
I would like to please disagree with your assessment of Bellingham. I have been here two years (in retirement from being a security consultant at Intel in Oregon) and I have nothing but good experiences here. I am both a gay and a bicyclist as well as an artist (www.allyn.com) and an engineer; and I have had absolutely no problems with the Bellingham Police. About 95 percent of the people I associate with (groups that I belong to include the Spark Museum, the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, the Community Boating Center, Bellingham Access Television, among others.
I am currently undergoing radiation treatment at the cancer center here and I have nothing but good things to say about them. They are an excellent facility, especially for a city of our size (85,000).
Bellingham is excellent for outdoor activity. I live close to downtown, but I can bicycle for less that 1/2 hour and be in open countryside.
I know the job market sucks, but for a retiree like myself, I find very little fault with this town.
Bellingham (Whatcom Transit) accepts cash (20.00) for the monthly pass.
Pass is swiped on machine at entry to bus. There is no swipe upon exit from bus. All bus routes both in and out of downtown are handled the same way.
There is no deduct done on swipe as pass is fixed $20.00 per calendar month.
System knows when each card is swiped to board the bus. System does not know when you get off the bus. Swipe is via mag stripe, not presence. In fact, if you want to use credit card, you have to go to the window. Machine only takes cash.
I started to make my own clothing in 1995. I still have the very first shirt that I have made and it is in far better condition after 23 years than new clothing that I see others wear.
I have not bought new clothing since I started sewing in 1995.
Not only does it last longer, it is also a pride of creation.
If you want to see pictures of my home made clothing, you can go to www.allyn.com
Yes, and become part of the 24 percent of internet traffic that is of pirated excrement from the entertainment industry!
What the original founders of the Arpanet (predecessor of the internet) have never even thought of!
Very eloquently said 'commonclusterfuck'! I luv it! Put that one with 'All Childrent Left Behind' or 'All Of Us Left Behind' when referring to 'no child left behind'.
Seriously, when I tried to read through the no child left behind documents, I was lulled to a deep sleep and was left miles behind!!
Do you hear that high pitched whine? That's Tesla spinning in his grave. Because he may very well have been gay himself. According to the Bernard Carlson book on Tesla, he did have a romantic relationship with another man.
When I was a child, I let my first electronic watch go through the laundry several times. It took about three times through our washing machine before the watch was totally dead.
If your washing machine can destroy the watch like ours did, then there should be no concern of privacy.
Now, if the washing machine is a IOT smart appliance and it detects that the smartwatch is in the load, then that is a whole other discussion.
I was fortunate, the washing machine my parents had in the 70's was not an IOT device. It did not know that the watch was inside it's tub.
Same goes with tools. Please don't get me going on Harbor Freight. Put it this way. A jewelry maker told me that he will not be caught dead inside a Harbor Freight store.
Why have you all forgotten about the most important topic regarding use of lasers in public?!!!???
In case you guys are not aware, two volunteers were blinded permanently by mis-use of lasers at Burning Man two years or so ago.
That is why lasers are banned from the playa except for under very strictly controlled conditions.
Lasers above 5 millawatts are not allowed to be used outdoors except with very strict permits from the FAA and other agencies; let alone many states.
And now we want to put a constellation of laser satellites up?
Are facebook's lasers all under 5 milliwatts?
Will the entire Mt. Wilson area be completely off limits to all aircraft?
And liability? That one will be a real hornets nest!
And don't forget aircraft, spacecraft, the space station; and in fact, anyone on the ground if the aiming software or hardware has problems?
No. Sorry. I see this as a no-go on laser safety alone!
Cmdin: Thank you for reminding me who you are. You were the leader for the Portland World Naked Bicycle Ride, wern't you?
I feel left out. First there was darkness. Then there was C. Then there was the kernel. Then there was Linux. Then there was Android. Then, finally, there was light. Through the gift of C, the world can now see!

And do you know what! There is life outside Intel!
Here is a delightful little video of me re-enacting my behavior on my last days at Intel. A real wonderful dance!
And Arthur Rosenau' love splashed down from the heavens! and made me almost completely forget Intel until I saw this article.
Thank you to the folks at SemiAccurate for the story!
I don't care about Sirius and others.
I get a thrill making/publishing my own music and videos!
You can see a sample at: My Bellingham Jail History Video with my own music

I wish that can return!!!
The city finally took some action and have been cracking down on the companies operating these skooters.
I was so happy that I was given the buy-out that I danced like a ballerina in the hallways of Intel's Jones Farm Campus as I left and started my retirement to Bellingham, Washington.
Here is the link to a video re-enactment of my behavior during my last days at Intel's Jones Farm Campus in Hillsboro, Oregon Mark Allyn as a Plastic Wrapped Ballerina Auditioning For The Nutcracker At Intel
So happy to dance and sing in front of Slashdot's community!

My thanks to those who used technology for a very good purpose! To bring such a person to justice is a good use of technology!!!
'Oh, Fiddle Sticks!!!!'
That's what I say to you all who put in CC into something that exists only in bits glowing on a boob tooob:
Fiddle Sticks to you all!

Lines for food, airline, hotel, are too long.
Takes about 1/2 hour to get a taxi.
Takes about 1 hour for taxi ride from Venetion to the convention center
Los Vegas is not a good walking city.
The convention staff act too much like cowboys treating us like cattle. The only thing missing are the whips.
Lots of stuff that we will never see later.
And finally, the unwashed masses!
