He got the part about Jon Johansen all wrong. He made it sound like he was trying to defeat region coding by making region coding sound even worse than it is. Jon wasn't trying to defeat region coding. He was trying to defeat CSS, an entirely different beast altogether. Region encoding ensures you only play DVDs from your region, CSS ensures only licensed players can play DVDs regardless of region. I don't like to see misinformation propagated during the "winning people to our cause" phase...Incidentally, Norway and France share a region code.

Where I live, many people do not speak a word of English, however the radio is almost entirely English songs. People will be singing a song in English, and you can try to speak to them and they have no idea what it's saying, just how it sounds. Hearing two teenagers singing "HOO LET ZE DOGS OUT WOO WOO" still leaves me in stitches.

  15. Choice on Is the Linux Desktop Getting Heavier and Slower? · · Score: 1

The thing is that you can install any of the big Linux distros and install a lightweight desktop environment. I'm sure if you were using older versions of GNOME or KDE they had less hardware requirements as well. You have the choice-eye candy/ease of use/interoperability versus speed. This choice is as old as GUIs themselves. I still run Windowmaker on Debian on a 2.8GHz P4 because I don't use a file manager or any of the other modern niceties of GNOME or KDE. But can I fault them for that? GNOME and KDE are quite fast on my machine. I don't use them because of choice. I used the same setup on my Pentium 133 with 56MB RAM and it was just as usable. It's STILL just as usable. It's like complaining Doom 3 requires a much faster machine than Quake 3, when Quake 3 was written for the fastest hardware of the time, which now is considered dog slow. Quake 3 still runs on it though, and Windowmaker 0.8 with 2.6 is faster on that P133 than Wmaker 0.6 with 2.2.

The mods have given you flamebait, but i'll bite. Why would you make a totally unsubstantiated claim like he did if his goal was only to review as provided? If he believes it's "up to the manufacturer to make things work, not the end-user", why would he even make a comment on using another distro?
