I think the biggest issue with this idea is that it fails to address the big Why? Why do I want to do everything in a web browser? Given that I have a laptop with all my data and all the software i need. And given that I can use this software to do my work regardless of my internet connection, why would the "google dream" be better?
It seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
Thank you for posting this. I've been searching around, and it's amazing that nobody is talking about this section. If I had mod points, i'd mod you up.
Regarding your description of free trade vs. state corporatism at your website, How can we prevent the propagation of Multinational corporations without resorting to government regulation? Is that form of Government regulation a necessary evil, or is there a method for preventing the formation of huge multinationals and monopolies without the government restricting free trade? If so, how would this method be implemented?
The democrats wanted to deny Estrada a judgeship not only because he was conservative, but because he was a latino. The republicans don't give a damn about the color of a person's skin - they'll give anyone who's qualified a position, so long as they deserve it. Has anyone appointed more minorities to meaningful positions than bush?
I would be fascinated if you could provide evidence of that assertion.
I have actually read this book, and disagree completely about the motives of the author. The characters are portrayed to enjoy their empty, meaningless lives. But the writing is such that the reader realizes that the world they are livining in is not happy at all. By the end of the book, the reader is desperate for the characters to realize what is happening to them and learn to think for themselves. But this will never occur. The message of the book is not that man should become sheep, it is that we can end up in a nightmarish situation in which we are sheep, and cannot help but bleat and graze along with the rest of humanity.
So we need to update the infrastructure so that it totally supports VoIP. Is there a really good reason why VoIP numbers have trouble getting into phone books? Is it an inate problem with the technology, or is it simply the phone book technologies getting stuck in a rut?
I was thinking of American history. In the early 20th century, there was a tremendous amount of immigration into the United States. Many people were sharply critical of this, arguing that america was by and for only Americans. The immigrants argued that it was as much their country as the native citizens.
Fast forward to 2004, Orkut, a community that was originally primarily english speaking recieves huge influx of brazilian "immagrents" The english speakers argue that their community was by and for English speakers. The brazillians argue that they were invited and that the community is now also theirs.
It's interesting, Orkut seems to be mimicing "real world" human society. This fight over languages looks a lot like the conflits over immigration that happen in every country. If anything, I would take this latest conflict as proof that internet forums can function as true communities, analogous to those in the physical world. In that sense, I consider this development to be an accomplishment for Orkut.
It's funny, people made such a big deal about how google parses your emails on the server. Of course, everyone who sends mail through a server with spamassasin installed has their messages parsed in a similar way.
Perhaps the AV people just like to convince themselves that the virus writers are bad coders, rather than live with the apparent reality that some of them are actually quite good.
My question is how long will it take to get all the barcodes reassigned, and all the barcode hardware changed. I seem to recall that a large portion of US barcode readers are hardcoded to 12 digits. How much will this new bit of regulation cost?
I'll bite. Slashdot is not a single entity. There are what, about 790,000 registered users, right? Ok, so why would all those people have the same opinion. Some of them won't have a problem with DRM, some will hate it with all their soul, and some (probably most) Won't mind it until it interferes with what they want to do. Since ITMS doesn't interfere with what most people want to do with their music. Most people don't care about it.
I would personally rather that a music store with minimal DRM become popular, rather than have a "1 copy, rent your music" model become prevalent.
I have never taken hallucinagens, so I cannot comment from personal experience, but I have always wondered whether the "new modes of conciousness" so often reported are actually new ways of looking at the world, or merely hallucinations themselves.
As a reference point, I would suggest reading the book Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman by Physicist Richard Feynman. One chapter in particular discusses the authors experiences with halluncination in a sensory depravation chamber.
During one experience in the chamber, Feynman came to understand exactly how memories were organized in the brain. It made perfect sense, however, upon leaving the chamber, he realized that what had made perfect sense an hour ago, was absolutly rediculous. His understanding had been no more real than the things he was seeing in the chamber.
I was thinking something along the lines of no pins at all, rather just use flat contacts. there would be a clip that would hold processor in place on motherboard.
(or maybe that wouldn't work, i'm not a processor engineer.)
Most apps can be installed simply by decompressing them and moving the application icon wherever you want. To uninstall you just delete the one Icon, all the associated files are packaged together inside it.
Some apps use a very simple wizard. You open it, click yes on the EULA, select the partition you want to install to, and click next.
If the system sucks, wouldn't a company come in and compete with it?
Thats an incredibly obtuse way of looking at DRM. Fraunhofer's patent does not dictate what you, the end user, can do with your mp3s.
Although it would be nice if Apple supported ogg...

I don't see apple specifically preventing users of PearPC from using System Update

DNS for phone numbers, now that would be cool. data entry would be a problem though, take longer to type them in. maybe a voice recognition system?

Notice a parallel?

not until Duke Nukem forever and Longhorn come out. Then things get frosty

Or maybe I'm to cynical.

If you're running a site that might get killed, wouldn't it be a good idea to mirror it ahead of time?

I pull the CF/SD card out and stick it into a USB2/IDE/SCSI flash reader. How is that a "drastically slower sync interface"?
If I recall correctly, flash memory writes at 4 MB/s, much less then a firewire linked harddrive.
I might be wrong though.
I was thinking something along the lines of no pins at all, rather just use flat contacts. there would be a clip that would hold processor in place on motherboard.
(or maybe that wouldn't work, i'm not a processor engineer.)
I did not, of course RTFA, but if they had a way of introducing noise into the disk after every burn, the disk would quickly become unusable.
If I make every 1000th 1 a 0, the 0 isn't "less good", it's just wrong.
OSX does it in a couple ways:
Most apps can be installed simply by decompressing them and moving the application icon wherever you want. To uninstall you just delete the one Icon, all the associated files are packaged together inside it.
Some apps use a very simple wizard. You open it, click yes on the EULA, select the partition you want to install to, and click next.
I've noticed the same thing, I have yet to see anything good from a .ws
the ATI windows drivers allow you to do real transparency on your windows.
