I'm sorry, you're wrong, was Re: trouble...
By overriding this mechanism in nature you create a child of inferior genetic make up who would no otherwise be by natural process.
Says whom? And where is your degree from?
Firstly, there is no evidence that IVF children are genetically inferior, period. Instead, "the consensus is that there is no increased anomaly rate in IVF. In fact, the anomaly rates are lower than recorded in birth defects surveillance programs. Irrespective, U.S. studies have never shown an increase in anomalies following IVF."
Secondly, studies show that "Children born through in vitro fertilization seem to be just as healthy psychologically as other youngsters."
I think it's unfair to create a child that may have genetic defects / other problems because of their parent's own selfishness.
I think you're fucking stupid. Selfishness has nothing to do with IVF. And your criticisms have nothing to do with scientifically documented reality.

Re:Does no one object?
If an embryo is already infused with a human soul that, unconsciously on its part at first, somehow plays a part in directing the formation of the body and mind, then the embryo is already an end of creation and a person in that sense. An end of creation is not to be used or abused by another man, for the embryo has some right to develop.
Spontaneous abortion (that is to say, the pregnancy terminating itself without outside cause) rates are 50% among the general population (some studies actually say 75%). For every two children that is naturally conceived and granted a soul, one of them dies before being born. This is the way that the normal human system works. 7 out of 10 of these spontaneous abortions occur before the pregnancy is "clinically recognized." Many women never realize they were pregnant; their period is only a few days late and there is no noticeable difference when it comes.
Among young women, the spontaneous abortion rate for IVF and other technologies is equivalent to that of natural conception (50%, with ~15% being after "clinical recognition.").
(Among older women using their own eggs, the rate climbs up to 30% or more after clinical recognition. Unlike sperm, eggs suffer from entropy and their quality rapidly declines after age 30).
An article describing a study which explored this area is here.
Although it is too early for statistics, it is possible that technologies like PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis) will lower the "death" rate by ensuring that the genetically healthiest embryos are used and clearly defective ones will not be used. "Genetically healthy" does not mean Gattaca-like perfection; it means that for 9 or so of the 23 chromosomes that we can test for today, there are two of each as their should be. XX or XY, not XXY, not X, not ''. No disorders that guarantee that the child may make it to birth, but will die of a heart defect by 3 months at the latest.
If every fertilized egg has a soul, then why does God let half of them die?
If a couple gets drunk, has sex, and gets pregnant with a child they don't want, does the church oppose that?
If a couple sacrifices (yes, it is a sacrifice) their time, money, energy, health, and sanity to have a child that they want more than anything else in the world, why would the church oppose that?

IAMALBIPOSD....There are sone real gems in the complaint...
From the Statement of Facts:
19. In a diabolical scheme to deceive computer users into misdirecting their computers to Internet sites of defendant's clients...
(emphasis mine)Ya gotta love a lawyer with the balls to characerize something as "diabolical;" not merely "greedy," "unethical," or even simply "fraudulent." They called this behavior worthy of the devil himself.
From Claims:
47. Defendants knowingly and intentionally made false statements of existing material facts.
48. Defendants intended for class members to rely on their material misrepresentations as fact.Hopefully this is a slam-dunk. The fact that they disguised their "puffery" such that people didn't realize they were ads gained them more clicks, but hopefully also a level of "reliance" beyond the low level that usually shields advertizing hyperbole from fraud claims.
Hopefully it won't stop here. The $505 per plaintif ($500 punative damages and an amusing $5 compensatory damages) has some teeth, but the most wronged parties aren't the ignorant clickers, but the ISPs who are paying to shuffle this crap back and forth. I keep wondering when the ISPs are going to sue spammers and junk ad pushers for some sort of trespass/DOS. Now they'd have a case for compensatory damages...

Re:Hrmm
I suggest you post a sign on your front lawn saying that you refuse to own guns
I'm not sure if you were inspired by this or if it is coincidence, but . . .
The JPFO used to make just that sign. They seem to have discontinued it. I can't understand why, it seems like a popular position.
If if is a coincidence I highly recommend you check them out. You don't have to be Jewish, you just have to support all of the Bill of Rights for all citizens.
Oh, and since I am posting anyway, the guy says the projectile takes on 1.5J of energy. For comparison, the rounds in the .44 Mag under my pillow (240 grain Hydra-shoks @ 1180 fps) have a muzzle energy of 2010J. Cool hack, but some miles to go between here and practical applicability.

so you realize who we're boycotting, part two
Sony sues Sony.
I agree with Charlie that we can find a way to use their own legislation against them. It's that, or put down the Playstation, and cancel HBO, and don't go to the movies, no matter how hot Carrie-Ann Moss looks in that tight leather suit. And those CD-Rs you burn to? See 17USC1003 through 17USC1007 for the details on those royalties. -

Re:should come in handy
Much of my family emigrated out from Vietnam in the years following the war. I think they would question your 3-4 million estimate at least in terms of it's specifics. 4 million did die, but this was during the entire conflict and was evenly divided on both sides of a civil war. These are numbers released by the Vietnamese government. Let's not lose sight on the fact that the north, being supported by other communist countries such as China, was trying to take over the south, which the US was trying to protect. People seem to believe we were being aggressors invading a country.
I do however agree that our central and south american policies have been and continue to be severely flawed. There is little excuse for Pinochet.
On the other hand, your accusation that the US has done nothing to restore power to Iraq is totally without merit. As this article shows, most facilities were left intact by US assaults but were vandalized and looted afterwards. Reports yesterday indicate that the US is spending $4 billion a month on the rebuilding of Iraq. Needless to say, a large portion is going towards the restoration of utilities. -
...economics of cooperation...The economics of Open Source are something that is rarely talked about in great detail. Generally, the satisfaction of the task is more important than any (at least, immediate) financial kickbacks. But generally, when a software engineer tells his friends and family what he/she does, they never really quite get it...what is software? You create something, but it's not physical. But it's more concrete than an idea.
The more fundamental question that firms and policy makers need to be thinking about is just what type of good is software?
It may take years for people to see that software has forever altered the how goods are perceived in capitalist economies. Software is not necessarily shipped, carried, ported, but...it is installed and uninstalled...no? The RIAA-file-sharing controversy is based almost exclusively on the inability to reconcile old capitalism (physical goods, use of trucks, etc) and new capitalism (ease of using replication technologies, marginal costs/returns not really applicable). In the face of all of this, the worker (developer) faces a whole different set of challenges and seeks a whole different set of benefits...hence Open Source.
...
If we are granting special tax privileges to organizations to produce software, we as a society are saying something about the nature of that good and the nature of the markets that create it.

UNIX was way before the X86:
You said "UNIX technology was created for the x86 architecture"
First x86: "The 8086 blasted away at amazing speeds of 4.77 and eventually 8 MHz -- hardly a calculator by today's standards. All this started in 1978."

Pathfinder gives some insight...
I live near Huntsville, Alabama - where our wonderful Pathfinder mock-shuttle sits by I-565. You can view the shuttle from a very close distance by visiting the Space and Rocket Center. The external fuel tank is covered with the same foam that was in service for the Columbia.
Many visitors to the center will stand underneath the tank (toward the rear of the assembly) and throw coins into the foam (sort of like a wishing well). You can see the foam and the thousands of dents from coins with the naked eye, including quite a few coins that have managed to stick.
Many people wonder why the foam replaced the bright white paint of the fuel tanks of the extremely early flights (STS-01 and STS-02). All that paint weighs in at about 240 kilograms. While it doesn't seem much, it costs an extraordinary amount to get enough thrust to lift one pound of material into space, let alone about 110 pounds.
The aforementioned link is a good paper (from NASA) that explains the "lessons learned" approach to space flight. -

Re:How about others (AMD, Mot, IBM)
Not very uncommon, really. Here are some AMD bugs, for example. I think the deal is that the Itanium has a rather serious problem that's been undetected for a long time. Itanium based computers can cost about $20000, which is why it's a big deal. If you have such a system you probably are running something important on it.
