Re:Bluerays ? I don't think so ...
The backlash alone would be enough to destroy this entire "blacklist" justification.
Yeah, logic would certainly make you that, doesn't it ?
But I suggest you read "tepples" response. We are not their customers, the content industry is.
Mind providing a link or two to prove this stupidity is actually being used today
I guess googeling yourself for a bit first is to hard for ya ?
But here you go:
https://hackaday.com/2014/09/0...
(from the top)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
(Chapter Encryption, paragraph 5)http://www.aacsla.com/specific... <-- This is the spec itself.
(4.12 Updating Host Revocation List in Non-volatile Memory of Licensed Drive)Blu-Rays and players can do a lot. Doesn't mean every feature is used (or abused).
Its your choice to trust a consortium not to wield that power. I personally don't like to be at their mercy like that.
Also:
https://news.slashdot.org/stor...But than again, lots of people have no problem with using all kinds of stuff with attached services where they are at the full mercy of a company.
Online games come to mind.
Payment processors like PayPal that are not banks and as such are not regulated and can freeze your account for months on end.
Web-"enabled" (read: won't work without it). Expensive IoT gadgets (room temperature controllers, hue lamps, front door locks, etc).
(i)Phones which own you instead of the other way around.
Deere tractors.Human kind seems to be rather good good at chanting the "that won't happen to me" mantra.

Re:Why do you buy Sony products?
we don't buy blu-ray
Then you're ignorant, because Sony != Blu-ray. Sony is only one of many corporations that make up the AACS LA.
Blu-ray is a 4x improvement over DVD to the point and (to me) a gigantic quality improvement; why on earth would you protest Sony by not buying Blu-rays? You can buy Blu-ray players from other companies, you know. 2 years ago, Samsung was making $100 players with Netflix streaming built into them. No Sony involved.
-
Re:Was it really worth it, Sony?
their obsessive lockdown of blu-ray (which of course, was cracked)...
Here is the link to the full "obsessive lock-down technology" standard that Sony employs. Look at THAT, Sony is not the only company promoting it! Even more, if you understood the tiniest bit about the system, you would know that it's expected to be cracked: that's part of its strength.
But now they've removed a little-used and fairly innocuous Linux feature from the PS3...
They removed for obvious reasons: Geoh0t announced that he was going to crack the PS3, you can also say people were using subsidized hardware and weren't buying games... they tried to protect their cake, don't minimize the impact of the "tiny feature they removed".
I agree with the rest, though, Sony had it coming.

Re:Summary contradicts itself...
Bollocks. The Digital_Only_Token has been in the CCI information for BD for a long time. The latest relevant AACS spec that defines it is here: http://www.aacsla.com/specifications/AACS_Spec_BD_Prerecorded_Final_0.951.pdf. You and TFA make it sound like something new.

Re:So....
This is just a patent for making hacking difficult, but since when does that stop anyone?
Apparently AACS knows how to stop them. -
My idea.
I had a similar idea, but I was going to encrypt something of mine with todays date in "Monthname daynum, YYYY" format, and then go around the web posting threats everywhere the date is used.
What, some set of numbers are more magical than anothers?

Check out the AACS-LA latest news!
http://www.aacsla.com/home
Classic... every news item, from January to now (only 3 I know), talks about the various cracks.
There is not one piece of good news (for them or their customers anyway). I think if I were a movie studio, I would be a little wary of using a product that can't say anything good about itself in the last 4 months!
I think it's funny. It's essentially a banner that advertises nothing but their failures to meet customers expectations!!! LOL -

Re:"Fixed Flaws"?Will not disable...other than as described in Sections 10.3.1 through 10.3.5 above. In other words, if the events described in section 10.3.1-10.3.5 happen then it expires the keys in the device. 10.3.2 says if the key was extracted or disclosed in violation of the license agreement. That pretty much covers all the hacks I would think.
here is a description of the mechanism for updating the drive.
http://www.aacsla.com/specifications/specs091/AACS _Spec_Common_0.91.pdf
Section 4.8 and 4.9
...If the version of MKB recorded on the media is higher than the version of HRL that the drive has stored in its non volatile memory, the drive verifies the signature in the Host Revocation List Record of MKB as specified in section 3.2.5.2. If the signature is successfully verified, the drive shall replace the previously stored HRL data, if any, with the newly read HRL data...

Re:"Fixed Flaws"?
Would you like to point us to the part of the AACS specs that specify this functionality?
Stick a new disk in your old player with the revoked keys and see what happens. It doen't play the new disk and won't play the old ones either until the player is upgraded.
Anyway Page 58 of the agreement near the bottom of the page..
http://www.aacsla.com/support/AACS_Interim_Adopter _Agreement_060215.pdf
It's easy to find. Do a search of the PDF for disable
It's the part where they describe disable products or devices where the security of the AACS Technology has been compromised by 3rd parties. -
Re:Corporate Spin
That would be a reasonable expansion, but according to the AACS organization, AACS is really Advanced Access Content System, however stupid it is.
-
Re:I don't completely get it.Your description of device keys and such is accurate if simplified, but how do you KNOW that this is all that is involved in the update? The Intervideo site says This update includes security enhancements as well as updated licensing keys that will be required to view both newly purchased HD DVD/BD titles and those in your existing HD DVD/BD collections.[Emphasis mine] That last part wouldn't be true if all they were doing is switching to a new set of device keys. Also this part: Please be aware that failure to apply the update will result in AACS-protected HD DVD and BD playback being disabled. would not be true either.
I'll also point to the AACS site, where they say, Through this online update process, manufacturers are also able to see that consumers update their player implementations prior to distribution of encryption key expiration information via new movie discs. That phrase, "distribution of encryption key expiration information via new movie discs" sounds a lot like distribution of an HRL.
Granted, the situation is ambiguous. But it seems to me that this could indicate that as part of the Media Key Block update on new disks, a new HRL will be distributed to invalidate the old WinDVD host key, in addition to the changes for the new WinDVD device key. That would be more consistent with what all these parties are describing. -
Re:I don't completely get it.once you put in a disc which says "Hey, you're supposed to be revoked" that player will stop working until you get an upgrade. This myth appears to have originated...
It's not a myth at all. Try reading section 4.8 of the AACS Introduction and Common Cryptographic Elements spec:An AACS licensed drive shall retain in non-volatile storage, the most recent Host Revocation List (HRL) data which it encounters and has verified. To do this, for the first AACS drive authentication to the media inserted, the drive shall read an MKB recorded on the media to check if its version is higher than the version of HRL that it has stored in its non-volatile memory... If the version of MKB recorded on the media is higher than the version of HRL that the drive has stored in its non volatile memory, the drive verifies the signature in the Host Revocation List Record of MKB as specified in section 3.2.5.2. If the signature is successfully verified, the drive shall replace the previously stored HRL data, if any, with the newly read HRL data.
What this means is that disks are distributed with Host Revocation Lists on them, cryptographically signed by AACS. Whenever a disk is inserted, the drive checks to see if the HRL on the disk is newer than the one it has in nonvolatile memory, and if so, it checks the AACS signature on the new one and stores it in memory. This allows a drive to refuse to talk to a given host software. Likewise there is a drive revocation list that the hosts are supposed to hold which tells them not to talk to certain drive versions, in case an attack is found in some models of drives. -

Misleading Post
I can't find the takedown notice, but no where in the forums or anything i've been reading does it say that they are requiring the utility to be removed because it can possibly circumvent hd dvd encryption.
if anything, they're requiring the tool be removed because it is an implementation of the technology and its not licensed by AACS, which it clearly states is required on the third page of this document http://www.aacsla.com/specifications/specs091/AACS _Spec_Common_0.91.pdf -

Re:Nope, it's really cracked
Not that anyone is reading this anymore, but:
Reading the spec it seems to me that once you play a new disk with your revoked device, the device knows. The device is required to maintain the most current revoked list in non-volatile memory. Therefore, once it knows it's revoked, it won't even play old disks. Even if you have the title keys.
Also, it's not as crazy for the AACS-LA to revoke a device as everyone seems to think - it doesn't revoke every device of the same model. Due to the multiple device keys and the way the subset-difference method of choosing processing keys works, they can revoke just yours. Or maybe just a few. Everyone else's will still work. -
Re:Yes, someone walk us through this.
Remember, too, you aren't necessarily defending against just the Doom9 people (regardless of their actual intelligence level), but against many other potentially smarter opponents with resources far beyond what a typical home user would have.
What makes you claim this?My example of the engineering student. Colleges often have equipment laying around that students are free to use during off-hours. Not just scanning electron microscopes, but other advanced equipment that wouldn't be available on the consumer market, some of which may even be prototypes built by professors and their research assistants.
In practice, this means that your hardware implementation guidelines can't assume an attacker will just have off-the-shelf electronic analysis equipment, like logic probes and oscilloscopes. You'll have to be at least partially resistant to equipment that you may not know exists. That's a tough problem to design against.
Further, it only takes one slip-up in one software or hardware implementation to break everything.
I don't see how that would be the case. Please elaborate on what kind of slip-up would "break everything".As examples, a software player which doesn't obfuscate the key locations (which is what happened here), or a hardware player where the title keys are easily sniffed while passing through the traces.
DeCSS was built because of a poor implementation of one software player (Xing), which broke the entire system. IMHO, AACS is sophisticated enough that we probably won't see such a fundamental breakdown, but that sophistication also means there are more places to attack. In practice, this may have the same effect as breaking it completely.
I'll admit I haven't looked into the AACS specs enough to see how exactly the processing key works, but I seriously doubt this would be true. AACS is well-designed, and very much built around the possiblity that keys will be broken in mind. Even if changing it would break playback, I was under the impression that only software players use the processing key, and they are already equipped to be able to quickly update keys (as their keys are supposed to be revoked every six months even if they are not compromised), so updating them for this (if it is actually necessary) is trivial.
Looking over the AACS Introduction and Common Cryptographic Elements (PDF link), section 3.2.4, the processing key is important for the generation of the media key, which would need to work with either software or hardware players.
Revoking AACS keys isn't a technical problem, but a public relations problem.

Can anyone clarify how it works?
I believe that you're correct (and Wikipedia agrees with you at the moment, saying "the fully automated solution for decrypting HDDVD/BluRay is yet to be done with this approach"), however I've yet to see a really good explanation of how today's crack actually works. There seems to be a lot of conflicting terminology at work; VUK, "processing key," "media key," etc.
My understanding of AACS, gleaned from Wikipedia and other sources, is as follows: the whole thing begins with several keys. One is a title key, which is generated for each movie (or one pressing of a particular movie), and is actually used to encrypt the video stream. Then, there is a Volume Identifier, which is basically a serial number on each pressed disc, located on a part of the disc which can't be written to by consumer disc writers (just like on DVD discs). The Volume ID and the title key are combined (or hashed); I think this combination of the two is what's being called the "Volume Unique Key" (VUK).
In order to make sure that only approved players can decrypt this whole thing, the VUK is encrypted using a randomly generated, per-title key provided by the AACS people. This key (the one used to encrypt the VUK) is called the Media Key, and it's not provided on the disc in the clear at all. It's provided as part of a "Media Key Block," which is the Media Key, encrypted with all the current player keys (so, it's there several hundred times at least, one for every model of approved player).
On the receiving end, the player reads the disc and extracts the Volume ID, the encrypted VUK (which the AACS documentation refers to as the Encrypted Title Key), and the Media Key Block. It gets the Media Key from the Media Key Block by using its secret Device Key, and then uses the Media Key and the Volume ID to decrypt the Encrypted Title Key, and get the Title Key. And from there, plays the video.
What I don't quite get, though -- and it would be great if anyone could fill me in, here -- is how today's crack fits into this whole scheme. What the crack seems to provide, is a way of producing a VUK for any disk, given the Volume ID, which is transmitted from the drive to the host computer in the clear (and is stored on the disc in the clear). But I don't see how this is possible, since the VUK also depends on the Title Key -- and if you know the Title Key, you're already done.
Anyone want to take a stab at explaining how the whole thing works, in something approaching understandable (or at least consistent, defined) terms? The Wikipedia article is not a lot of help right now. -
Re:Investment in DRM vs. Investment to crack
I'd be willing to bet that the cost to produce AACS was pretty high in the grand scheme of things. AACS was created by a consortium consisting of IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Disney, and Warner Brothers. Granted that huge corporations like those can afford to throw tons of money and resources at a project like AACS, but the bottom line is that it probably cost a pretty penny. Consider the person-hours involved in just high level meetings among all those companies to hash out the AACS specification. If you get one person from each of those 8 companies to spend one full week of work (assuming 8 hour days) just on hammering out the specification then you're talking about 320 person-hours. Assuming those people have average annual salaries of $80,000 (SWAG) and work 40 hour weeks then that's over $1500 a week for their salaries, or $38/hour. 320 person-hours at $38/hour equates to $12,160.
Now obviously I'm pulling all these numbers out of you-know-where, but the point is that these companies invested a lot of manpower and a lot of time to create AACS. It may not seem like a lot to their respective bottom lines, but it does add up to a lot of salaries paid specifically on AACS, and most likely a lot of investment in hardware for development, testing, etc. It certianly wouldn't have been an insignificant ammount if you could do a full audit of all their books. I'd say (another SWAG) that the total cost of developing and implementing AACS would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,000,000 when you include hardware & software design/development as well as the salaries, etc. of the people involved.

Decryption algorithm needs an experts touch...
This is a shameless appeal for some coders with HDDVD or BluRay drives to come out of the Slashdot woodwork and finish what muslix64 started. He said he will not finish the AACS decryption tool beyond where it stands, and it has some some serious problems:

7B 10 3C ...
Found an even better on in 7B103C5DCB08C4E51A27B01799053BD9:
"A 128-bit input Device Key (which may be a subsidiary Device Key) is denoted 'k'; in this diagram. This loop is executed three times to produce 384 output bits, incrementing the seed register by one each time. The output of AES-128D is XORed with the seed registers output at each step. For each AES-G3 calculation, the seed register is initialized by the 128-bit value s0, which is given by the following constant: 7B103C5DCB08C4E51A27B01799053BD9"
Chapter 3.4 explains how this AES-G3 calculation is iterated until a suitable device key is derived. Hiding the constants and calculations in a soft implementation may make for interesting work.

Re:Not really cracked, more like circumvented
As best as I've been able to gather from what I've read today, the very clever fellow just implemented that publicly available decryption routine, and also discovered an (as of yet unreleased) method for obtaining decryption keys. It seems very likely from everything I've read that he is pulling the keys from the PowerDVD program - perhaps they're left unencrypted similar to the original DeCSS obtained a key from the Xing player?
Exactly. I've read the source code he released and it's less than 500 lines of Java. All it does is open each file on an HD-DVD and call the built-in Java AES decryption functions on each "pack" of HD data. There's a slight bit of handling for the pack format and all, but it's straight from the AACS spec.
Now the interesting thing I found from the "pre-recorded video book" spec were these two quotes (page 18):A licensed product shall treat its Device Keys as highly confidential, as defined in the license agreement.
andExcept where otherwise provided for in these specifications, the values used to enable playback of AACS content (e.g. Title Keys and Volume ID) shall be discarded upon removal of the instance of media from which they were retrieved. Any derived or intermediate cryptographic values shall also be discarded.
So it seems that PowerDVD (or whatever player was used) was fully within the spec to no protect the Title Keys that are assumed to have be swipped by this prog. -
Re:Am I the only one who thinks Talledaga nights .
both the blue ray and the hd-dvd units can be bricked at will by the content providers,
Prove it.
Lots of idiots have been ranting on it, but it's almost certainly based upon one rather mundane sentence in a Reuters article, which is being widely speculated about, and probably completely misinterperated.
Their own docs and specifications make no mention of any such feature: http://www.aacsla.com/specifications/
etc.
If you want to make crazy claims, get at least some proof to back them up. -
Alternatives to actual region coding
Could the region coding not be included a different way, maybe as part of the encryption. If each drive requires a key to decrypt the disc content, players for certain regions could contain certain keys while other areas contain different keys. Just from a quick glance at the AACS specifications http://www.aacsla.com/specifications/specificatio
n s.htm/ it does seem there would be ways to restrict playback to specific regions. -
HD-DVD has already *GONE* down that road
The HD-DVD peoples published the specs on their DRM scheme months and months ago.
Meanwhile to counterpart Blu-Ray's "interesting" copy control features, at least as the standard stands, HD-DVD discs MUST CONTAIN DRM in order to be played in an HD-DVD player AT ALL. This is not like DVD, where CSS was an option which disc creators could choose to follow or not follow and you could just freely stick into a DVD player a DVD-R you burned. An HD-DVD drive is not allowed, by the current compliance rules, to play ANY HD-DVD disc which doesn't have a digital watermark granted directly by the central HD-DVD authority. Interestingly these watermarks include a "banned" list-- HD-DVDs keep an internal list of watermarks that have been "revoked", and every new HD-DVD printed will contain an up-to-date copy of that "revoked" list which the HD-DVD player must update every time you put in an HD-DVD. If the HD-DVD player sees a disc whose watermark has been placed on the "banned" list, it refuses to play it. -
Blu Ray Java based on iTV GEM? Blu Ray DRM basedI have been looking at developments in interactive TV (OCAP/ACAP/MHP, etc.) and I noticed that this site (http://www.mhp.org/mhp_technology/gem/) had indicated that the Blu Ray organization was looking at using the Java-based GEM spec as the basis for interactive applications in Blu Ray media.
GEM also appears to be at the heart of the convergence efforts for iTV (DVB-MHP, OCAP, ACAP, and ARIB - otherwise known as the digital broadcast standards for Europe, North America, and Japan for over-the-air and cable TV).
One iTV standard would certainly simplify life for content developers, cable companies and broadcasters - but Microsoft and Toshiba are now pushing a Microsoft
.NET based approach for HD DVD - and MS may be putting an HD DVD drives intothe Xbox 360 http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.php?option=conte nt&task=view&id=1473), coupled with MS's IPTV efforts - a unified iTV technology will be elusive. That said, there may be a unified DRM technology between HD DVD and Blu Ray based on AACS. See this site http://www.aacsla.com/ for the specications. Apparently, we would be able to download and burn DRM'd content to HD media.
Fun fun fun.
