Why do we need
an InterPol, when we have S.P.U.T.U.M.?

Re:Like Android, don't like the G1
- It takes up less space on the PCB, which means thinner and smaller handsets.
- It allows customers to use a PHF with more than one control button without having to resort to a custom controller (a la the iPod)
- It reduces the number of ports on a phone (as you have a single one for headphones, charging and syncing) which in turn reduces the size of the ID.
OK, I understood what PCB means in this context (printed circuit board), but I'm scratching my head on PHF. Public Health Foundation? Newport News Airport? Pleasant Home Foundation? Obviously, Google is not my friend when trying to find out what this abbreviation stands for. Perhaps you meant personal hands free, which I only found on one acronym finder site. (Another such site gave much less useful results.) Perhaps this is a regionalism? Nobody that I know in the States calls it "personal hands-free," they just call it "hands free."
If you do mean a hands-free unit, then what kind of custom control are you referencing in regards to an iPod/iPhone?
Same goes for ID in this context. Integrated... somethingorother... would be my guess. Obviously not IDentifier/IDentification, nor Intelligent Design. (The acronym finders referenced above each have over 200 possible meanings for ID, several of which are applicable to consumer electronic design and/or electrical engineering.)
A little less jargon, or a handy chart of relevant TLAs (three letter abbreviations), would be appreciated.

System Naming Conventions
While it may not be the more desirable, I've always used the following or similar context in server naming:
1-3 character Company Name: CO
1-2 character City, Building, or locale: CY
1-4 character Server Function: SRV
1-3 character Identifier: 01Final Name: COCYSRV01
A more real-world example would be:
Company: Cogs Inc
City: Dallas, TX.
Server: Active Directory Server
Server ID: #2CGI D ADS 02 = CGIDADS02
If you have trouble making up a universal acronym for something, try visiting the following site: http://www.acronymfinder.com/
Regardless of the size of the company, this schema has always worked for me.

Well, we could bring out the other jokes, then.
Especially as there are way enough other meanings for SMB. "Self Mating Beam", for example, should be good for some more MS-related jokes...

Re:Why
Moderator, I'll have you know all those came from either Acronym Finder, Acronym Attic, or The Simpsons "Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind", and were all intended in humor. And in fact there was no entry for "QUILTER" at either site (I chose not to take it as QUILTer from these hits).
Also, according to Acronym Finder TROLL stands for Transmitter and Receiver Of Laser Light. -

New Political Party! What's in a name?!!From the summary: Senator On-Line [CC] will give Australian residents eligible to vote a chance to vote in on-line polls for every piece of legislation that comes to the Senate. The senator will then blindly vote in accordance with the majority. The party has no position on anything until it is voted on and has been approved by the Australian Electoral Commission as a legitimate party.
So, this would be the Senator On-Line party? Where have I heard SOL before?
;^)Not off to the most auspicious start, are they?

Re:Amazing
I assume XMB does not stand for XYBASE Message Broker? That just leaves Xtreme Math Baseball, Xtreme Math BasketBall, or Extreme Message Board as the less likely alternatives to Cross Media Bar (Sony user interface).
My PS3 is expected to arrive tomorrow, so I'm not that familiar with its features yet. I even transposed a couple letters and thought was talking about X-Windows BitMapped (XBM) graphics files. -

If you do, then there's always http://www.acronymfinder.com/ . It recognizes a surprisingly large number of acronyms, and if it doesn't recognize yours you can add it. Personally, I just add it to keyword search in firefox. -

Re:Interesting Solution
Unfortunatly, only one of those acronyms are on the Acronym Finder http://www.acronymfinder.com/
So while the original poster's text was a bit over-acronymed, I can still understand the basic jist of it. Your post however appears to lack any merrit. I hope it was made in an attempt to ridicule the original poster's excessive use of acronyms, but it would have been significantly better had you used real acronyms.

Re:how many KVMs
Now all we need is somebody to connect a KVM (switch) to a KVM (virtualisation) machine that's running a KVM (Java KVM)!
If I get to pick who gets to hook all this up, my vote goes to K. V. Mahadevan, who is also under KVM in wikipedia. Or perhaps a member of the Belgian Football Team, while visiting the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. Actually, looking at a list of Acronyms for KVM, it appears that this usage of KVM ranks second to last of the 8 that it lists, only above the Belgian Football team, Koninklijke Voetbalclub Mechelen. Pretty pathetic, if you ask me. -

re: more acronym fun
the entire article doesn't mention once what NTP means. They hinted at it but I'm still not sure. I shouldn't even have to ask but what does NTP stand for?! And better yet, why does slashdot always post articles with acronyms without explaining what they mean once before turning them into an acronym? (a basic rule of english composition) Do they just assume everyone knows every tech acronym that exists?
http://www.acronymfinder.com/ might come in handy. Although it doesn't cover company names, which this is. Maybe the company doesn't have a full name....just a few letters. -
SLES is "SuSE Linux Enterprise Server"
Am I the only one here who didn't know what this acronym meant?

Re:Acronyms
I think both examples are very symbolic.
You must be an english major, looking for symbolism among the coincidences. Do you know how small the search space for three letter acronyms is? 26*26*26 = 17,576. That's pretty damn small when you compare it to the size of the english language (about 300,000) so there's going to be some overlap on RMS. Besides, if it wasn't RMS, you would have found some other 'meaningful' acronym.

Re:What??? never heard of DSL then? You've got the first point, but you're off on the second point.
Didn't the context of the original post seem a little odd for DSL to mean Digital Subscriber Line? First time I saw DSL in a similarly confusing context, I hit Acronym Finder to figure out what the hell was going on. If Digital Subscriber Line made sense in that context, one couldn't blame your ignorance in any way. However, when basic logic skills can get you the correct acronym in a matter of minutes, there's a problem.

Recursive would be something like what the acronym LAME stands for: "LAME Ain't an MP3 Encoder."

Help them make more...
By using this link to get to the story
;-)
Interesting to note the default "google" keyword for the address bar puts the sourceid=firefox in there
As an aside, for those who want to make their own custom keywords (and don't know how to), here's an example: Bookmarks->Manage Bookmarks, click on any of the bookmarks under "quick searches", click new bookmark (top left), I made one for acronyms using acronym finder.
Name: Acronym Finder
Location: right click here, copy link location, paste (/. chews up the link)
Keyword: af
Description: You can put whatever you want here, it's optional
Then you click ok. Now when in firefox you can just search for acronyms by typing af + the acronym, for example: af HTTP
For other websites that use a link similar to the acronymfinder one, just insert %s where your query would go. In my example it's in Acronym=%s. You can also note the other default quicksearches that already exist (ex. slang for urban dictionary, dict for dictionary.com) -
