    Hirobo is a well known manufacturer of R/C helicopters, one of their model, the X.R.B Lama is a small indoor one, you can see a video of it in action, it seems really great! It works with two counter rotating rotors, and has a cable to get power/signal so it's not true R/C, but still funny, imagine flying over your neighbour's cubicle :o). There is a review at RC Universe.

    You're not the only one. My WinCE-based (please stop throwing things at me) Cassiopeia E-100 can run PocketMVP which can play MP3/Ogg audio, and MPEG/DivX videos.

    The only problem is (as I see it) that a 32MB CF card (which should hold a full CD at almost CD quality "-q0") currently costs $15. On the other hand, Minidiscs are about $1 per disc, hold more than a CD, can record live audio (analog or digital--no computer required) in realtime, can edit the tracks on the fly, has better sound quality than Ogg at even the highest quality settings, has a longer battery life, puts off less heat, never skips, can be rewritten more times than a CF card, are more physically durable than a CF card, etc.

    ...people should learn the joys of browsers like Mozilla and Opera.

    I recently updated IE (it has a problem with Cartoon Network's gToons game) so I could do a little gaming. I noticed when I bumped it up to 5.5 that it gave me a list of things to install along with it, including Media Player, Outlook and Script Support. Script Support? Isn't that IE's problem in the first place? You'ld think they'd take that sorta crap out. Long story short, I unchecked everything but the browser update, and sat back while my painfully slow 56K connection chugged away.

    After about an hour (damn Adelphia), I ran the update and of course, rebooted. Once I was back in Windows, I fired up IE, only to be greeted with an alert window telling me "Hey! You need to get Script Support!" Now, didn't I tell it that I didn't want that in the first place? After telling it that I never want that crap installed on my machine, things have been fine, but I still can't play gToons. Not to mention the damned thing made itself my default browser again without asknig my permission...

    Crap like this Xupiter nonsense is exactly why either Microsoft needs to clean up it's act (script support is usually what starts up web-based virii), or people need to actually try and learn something about computers instead of sticking with the Beast for the easy factor.

    I had many of the same requirements when I started working on my own digital jukebox. Today, the hardware is operational in my living room and all of the foundation code is in place. Before everybody berates me for not using Linux, I am happy with WindowsXP for this application... I am using Tomcat... Both my wife and I find ourselves actually listening to our large music collection more frequently since I connected the jukebox to our stereo. The on-screen menu system makes access to the collection easy and the digital audio out produces excellent sound quality to my (non-audiophilic) ears.

    BTW - yes I am even using the HomeTheater Master MX-500 universal remote..

    I built a small case from standard parts out of aluminum bar.

    Here is a link to some Pictures of it.

    It looks big in the pictures, but it really is quite small. That is a DVD rom in between the network card and sound card.

    You want to know why I don't have broadband? Because despite living within 10 miles from AOL, PSINet, WorldCom, as well as big corp. offices of several other well known firms, there is still no viable broadband for most people out here in Loudoun County.

    Rumour is, eastern Loudoun was a failed experiment in "fibre to the curb" a few years back. There's more fiber out here than in a Metamucil factory. Thus -- no DSL.

    "Fine," you say, "what about cable?"
    Well, we're in a real jiffy of a situation in that aspect too. As if the fact that we've got Adelphia out here isn't bad enough, the bit of broadband roll-out that they are doing is going west-to-east -- leaving the areas with the highest population densities out in the cold.

    Finally, since you likely live in a TH/Condo out here -- myself included -- unless you have access to southern skies, you have no satellite options.

    A while back, I wrote a letter to my local Representative about the fact that they lured all the high-tech companies out here w/o having the infrastructure in place for high-tech workers. His reponse was typically clueless.

    Verizon themselves also recieved an angry letter from me, very recently, as they incessantly flood my mailbox with DSL ads, despite the fact that I can't get it.

    Bitter? No, not at all...

    It's FREE with SOURCE, but I'd highly recommend you DONATE for continued development of the project.

    As for all the stupid "but it won't play a 700MB DivX movie" comments, well no shit! Considering most PDAs have screen res.'s of 320x240 and crap audio capabilities, what's the point in playing a DVD-quality encoded movie? You have to RE-ENCODE IT!

    Advisable settings for re-encoding for PocketPC (and probably other PDAs) - using VirtualDub:
    Resize to 320x240 (bicubic) and decimate the framerate by 2 (so if your source was 30FPS it'll now be 15FPS). By all means try at 25FPS though, it may work, but if not and you want to keep the framerate then make the video smaller, eg. 160x120
    Sharpen moderately (to counteract the softening effect of the resize)
    Use 2-pass encoding, and aim for around 192-256KBPS bit-rate.
    Encode audio using a decent MP3 codec NOT the default DivX codec (well certainly not DivX 4's audio codec, as it used WMA and will eat the PPC's CPU). Personally I'd just go for 16 bit mono 22KHz at 24kbps, but if you want stereo then experiment a bit to see what works best.

    Remember when you're encoding that you're trading off one thing for another, ie. video size vs. video FPS vs. video bitrate vs. audio stereo/mono vs. audio bitrate, so experiment until you find a combination that works for you.

    Personally I've got a high-quality 2hr movie onto a 256MB CF card no problems, at 320x240 25fps with audio, so it's definitely possible.

    PocketDivX kicks ass!

  16. Adelphia Has 3Mbps by suwain_2 · · Score: 2 · on 3 Megabit Cable Modems, Anyone?
    I have Adelphia's PowerLink service. For the first six months, it was up about 50% of the time, although, to their credit, they did have to do a major overhaul of the entire town's cable system. (They took over... another company that had taken over the cable system, and had left it in a sad state of disrepair.)

    I now get 3 Megabits/sec download (being a cable modem, it, of course, varies, but I'm actually slightly over this sometimes -- I once got 3333kbps). I could understand download speed changing a lot, but what I don't get is my upload -- it's capped at 128 kbps, and I've never reached it. Sometimes in speed tests, I'm below 56kbps, other times I'm near 128 kbps. The download, though, is almost always consistent.

    I do want to mention that... a.) Adelphia is now in bankruptcy, but continuing to operate; b.) Their customer support is a wee bit lacking. I'm sure there are some very knowledgable people there, but I tend to get the totally clueless ones. Teaching a computer tech what traceroute is and how you use it is painful. (And if anyone gets Adelphia, I suggest you run your own nameserver. That's a frequent cause of failure -- it arbitrarily goes down from time to time, while my connection stays up.)

    Not too significant, but I might as well mention it: Their AUP strictly forbids running any sort of server. (They explicitly name any sort of server you could possibly think of, but also mention that the list is not all-inclusive.) However, I have a server running Apache and ssh hanging out on the web, and occasionally even use it; no one has ever said anything to me. I'm guessing it's the usual "We don't really care, but if Slashdot moves out of Exodus and onto your cable modem, we're going to kick you off," which is certainly understandable.

    You ask: why does my service provider deserve more $$$s ?

    This is really very simple. Most cable companies are allowed by law to be monopolies, but in exchange their rates are limited or controlled by the authority that licensed them. Their most profitable (Cable TV) market is already saturated, so in order to make more money, with less effort, they need to do things that are within their monopoly agreement but easy.

    They did the same thing in the 70's and 80's with charging per television, until the FCC had a moment of clarity. Rather than adopt the reasonable practices of the existing bandwidth industry, they will try their old favorites first.

    As for the claim of cost of theft, they've been pushing that lie for decades. It's the same lie the BSA uses: they assume that the revenue they might have gotten, absent piracy, would have (a) all been profit, and (b) all been realized. There would be expenses incurred in collecting that profit (those expenses would be blamed on the pirates, of course), and some pirates, forced to choose between paying up and disconnecting, will disconnect. (Or in the case of software, uninstall.)

    If my cable company was willing to be honest with me about the load on my local cable network, and my upload and download caps, and could make their e-mail server work as advertised, (OK, skip the mail server, just stop blocking port 80 at the router) I would be honest with them about how many machines I have, and why I want a static IP address.

    And by the way, Adelphia, if you're reading this, grow up. The 'no porn' clause in the ToS is a joke. (Think I'm kidding? Read for yourself.))

    Im really just trying to find a replacement for the Toshiba Libretto. After Toshiba stopped making the palm top, the only real choice people had was PDAs. I really need a wireless device, If I only wanted a calendar or contact list, I have PocketNet phone with Fonesync software. But I needed a true wireless connection with a tcp/ip stack(for SSH) so I picked up a CDPD modem. But carrying around a full size laptop sucks, so I migrated to a PDA. I first started off with an wireless Palm Omnisky. Battery life was nice, upto 1 week light use, and 2 weeks if it sat im my pocket. But I wanted color and sound, I migrated to the PocketPC (Ipaq) and CDPD modem. Not bad, I can surf websites in html not wap, and even listen to mp3s. (Very important for work ya know!) Battery life is weak, and I find myself letting the battery die right when I need. Picked up a IBM Microdrive. Fast, was able to move documents from my laptop and back, neat idea, but didnt use it as much I wanted. I gotta get around to trying out the Pocket Divx Player and put a divx movie on the microdrive. (Gotta watch Red Dwarf ep with the Sock Puppet.)

    Heck, They even have PDA pr0n for those long boring conference calls. :)

    Uhm. Problems? What problems? Houston, we have a problem? Wait, no, yes, er, maybe?

    Well, save for probably 30-50 pieces of workstations and Axil hardware, everything's passed the preliminary tests.

    I can unofficially (IANACSP[1]) say that our network is 100% ready as far as the data side goes.

    We officially have 4 hours as of 4 minutes ago till the Trial By Fire, and we have an 'example' system - an Axil 320 - to see what actually happens - it's set to EST so it's one of the first to blow up - also about 5 minutes fast.

    From what I have heard from other locations and other companies, everything looks good to go. Some telcos, mostly cellphone companies and LD companies, are afraid of the load. But, all I can say is that it looks like a big NOTHING.

    That's right. Y2k is the big NOTHING.

    The technology is not relevant to the consumer -- only to the implementer. As an implementer yourself, your perspective is different from that of the consumer, and you're not seeing the same issues that we're seeing.

    In my area, DSL is out of my budget ($100 per month for 128kbit, to $500 per month(!!) for 768kbit). And Adelphia hasn't quite got around to offering their PowerLink service in my area -- but from a quick glance at their FAQ I don't want these people anywhere near my computers when they're ready. (Yes, that's computers you evil bastards.)
