Re:I'm on a 100% music CD boycott
No DRM and 44100 samples per second and two channels are good enough for me.
So is this.

Apple buys crapload of Flash
This would fit in with their buying of 40 percent of Samsung's second finanical half output of flash memory.
Even a 1 gig phone with my iPod would be pretty nice. Now if only they used allofmp3.com instead of the iTunes music store. -
iTMS?
How 2004. I get all my music from here and pay about $10/gig.

AllOfMp3 rules!
I live in Canada where downloading music offa P2P is not illegal. Allofmp3.com is kinda like p2p except the audio quality and selection are superior.
I'm not advocating breaking any laws (it's copyright infringement anyways, isn't it?) but Allofmp3.com is awesome and anybody who doesn't use Allofmp3 is a knucklehead. -
Re:Is P2P traffic really THAT high?
What, you don't remember how suprnova.org Bittorrent traffic accounted for a healthy percentage (hint: 35%) of ALL international traffic?
Come on, man. I get about 100k of Email per day, unless there are meaningful attachments. I go to my favorite MP3 site and chew thru a week's email (including attachments) in about 15 minutes.
No, I don't do "copyright infringing" P2P anymore, unless it appears to be at least reasonably legit.
And for those that do, it gets huge. FAST. (PS: How much of P2P is over HTTP? Napster was P2P HTTP... and so is GnuTella, if I recall... -
Re:Well, I'm confused..
The part where the RIAA would never let anybody, including Real, sell unprotected music.* So, they had to come up with a protection scheme. On the iPod, your file format choices are either MP3 (unprotected) or Apple's version of AAC, with DRM.
Real reverse-engineered Apple's FairPlay DRM, and doesn't want Apple to sue them for doing it, since Apple no longer has a monopoly on where iPod owners legally get music.*
*Of course, there are ....international... options, such as http://www.allofmp3.com/ -
Re:"You can get anything you want.." - iTunes
Some power user you are. You can get it from the Russians [allofmp3.com] for a buck 46.

Re:I don't like the subscription model
But what about AllOfMP3.com? It's apparently legal, (Russian copyright laws regarding broadcast) They have a great selection, the prices are good ($1-$3 per album) and download speed is nice, tool. (I routinely hit 1 Mb on my downloads!)
-
.99 per song is too expensive
I've bought and downloaded whole albums for $1.24, and songs for as low as $.06 at AllOfMP3.com. You have to commit to purchasing at least $10 worth of music, but my money has gone a long way. I even downloaded several albums I owned in the past but lost over time, for example "green Mind" by Dinosaur Jr. I don't think I could even find that album in most music stores anymore!

Re:The artists do get paid!
Museekster have investigated them and found that they do all their business legally. They have even won an award.
Besides, that Russian organization is licensed for that task in Russia, not the U.S., Canada, or the EU. Royalty percentages in Rubles versus Dollars (or Euros) is not exactly fair.
Rubbish! AllOfMp3.com do all transactions in US dollars. I am sure that the artists can request to receive their royalties in dollars too. -
Its allofmp3
Russia's federal space agency is really just a front for allofmp3.com. They need the money to buy more CDs. Check out the FAQ

Hi.

Re:My experiences purchasing and downloading mp3s
Come to think of it, they are probably going to sue you since you linked to it as well.
You must be joking - you can't actually be so stupid. First, I live in Canada where the courts have ruled it's not illegal to download music from p2p networks (too lazy to dig up a news link). Second, as a previous poster mentioned, AllofMp3.com is in full accordance with Russian and international law, so nothing I am doing is wrong. Maybe the RIAA isn't getting what they feel is their cut, but I could care less. I'll always try and do the right thing (TM), and follow the dictates of my conscience.
-
I feel you brother
When you're financialy killed like you and I are, you gotta make the cutbacks. Paying for music would be top on my list for such cost-cutting.
However, if you live in Canada, don't worry about it anyway. Music downloading is not illegal in any way, as determined by the courts. Copyright infringement? Maybe, but copyrights are never read, unenforcable and nebulous in regards to their legality.
I recommend checking out AllOfMp3 if you either can't find the song you want on the p2p networks or want to download legally. It's cheap, it operates in full accordance with Russian and international law and super user-friendly. You don't even have to use your credit card number. Instead buy a prepaid code from XROST/PayPal and enter that code into allofmp3.
Just a thought. I know what it's like to scrape by! -
Re:My experiences purchasing and downloading mp3s
If you like AllofMp3, you'll probably be interested in the latest attempt by the music industry to sue people who link to it.
That, my friend, is definetely not fair! -

My experiences purchasing and downloading mp3s
I've experimented with three of the top mp3 downloading services: iTunes, AllOfMp3 and Napster. And of the three, AllOfMp3.com was clearly the fairest with the best selection.
I guess calling them "music" downloading services is more accurate, because iTunes distributes songs in the mpeg4 format (I'm guessing only the iPod can play mpeg4's, because my MuVo mp3 player won't). Other annoyances include a circa 20 mg application I had to download and install just to have the privilege to shop at iTunes, the rather weak selection (I was looking for tracks off the new Seether album "Karma and Effect", which they didn't have) and lastly the .99 cost per track which is a little expensive. Nice interface though.
Napster is so friggin' annoying, from the splash page to the pathetic selection (unless you like rap like R. Kelly *gag*) that I had to bail. They too didn't have any of the tracks I was looking for.
Happily, AllOfMp3.com did have all the tracks I wanted, and each track costs about 12 to 20 cents! This is by far the best deal I could find. The "catch" is you have to commit $10 from your credit card, but I easily got more than an album's worth of music I really wanted, and I'll continue to shop there for all my fist raising, head banging needs. The interface was simple enough to navigate (could be streamlined more, but I'm nit-picking) and I was able to download in mp3 format at various levels of quality. Highly configurable. IMHO, it's the best music download service on the internet.

Have you tried AllOfMP3.com?
It sounds like you want http://www.allofmp3.com/. They're just like iTunes except:
1) They charge by the amount transferred
2) They're ten times cheaper
3) They let you choose what kind of encoding you want
4) They're technically legal (thanks to Russia's "mandatory licensing" laws)
5) If you use it you piss of the RIAA.
If you run Windows they even have a client that's not unlike iTunes. Other OSes will need to use their web interface. -
Re:I already got Beethoven.
Well, hmmm... yes. But www.allofmp3.com has a nice collection of classic music too (besides other things).

iTunes release once again breaks fairkeysSadly this release once again breaks fairkeys and DeDRMS by Jon Lech Johanson. And with him employed by Apple now, he can't re-break them because it would be divulging a trade secret.
It is legal to reverse engineer for compatibility if you don't have inside information. It is not ok if you do. It is sad, but a good move for Apple.
RIP DRM Free iTunes, Viva allofmp3

Re:I'm not surprised
I regularly buy albumns in a lossy but no-drm format for $1.50. Easy searching, nice recommended titles, and no hassle. A few years back I was searching for Americaned themed songs for a 4th of July party song mix. It was a PITA searching for them on Gnutella.
-
Re:I'm not surprised
I know music stores will never consider selling music using a lossless codec without DRM
AllOfMP3 already does. -
Re:Still a little bit expensive

Need more be said? -
Re:Backwards compatable?Use allofmp3.com.
It will cost you $0.02 per MB downloaded, and you can choose the bitrate yourself. The instant gratification is the same as iTunes, but there's no DRM.
The RIAA could learn a lot from allofmp3.com. The answers to their problems are (1) pricepoint and (2) not fucking the consumer around.

Re:my favorite quotePossibly an equally useful quote:
"The Internet treats censorship as damage, and routes around it."
- John Gilmore, cyber-libertarianTo that end, I'd like to point anyone to allofmp3.
I discovered them a few days ago, when I was trying to find a copy of one of my favorite albums of all time. My only copy was a worn-out cassette tape; the CD is not available under iTunes nor Amazon nor anywhere else as far as I can tell. I googled, found allofmp3, and $1.75 later, the freely copyable MP3s were mine.
No, I don't get a commission and no, I'm not affiliated with allofmp3 in any way. Sheesh. I just thought I'd share something with you.

This is why I get my mp3s from allofmp3.comFrom the website:
I hated buying CDs and only liking one song, and the big music companies stopped selling singles, so when I heard about iTunes Music Store selling songs for only 99 cents, I was pretty pumped. I bought about 60 songs, but was pretty peeved when I tried to put them on my mp3 player (not an iPod) and found that iTunes only works with the iPod! I paid for the songs! Why can't I play them where I want?
This, boys and girls, is why I get my mp3s from allofmp3.com. The problem is that record companies no longer sell singles; I don't know why they gave up this staple of income. Since people wanted singles, they got them for free off of the internet. Since record companies won't allow people to download files in an open format, because of unfounded fears of piracy (Clue: Piracy is rampant on the internet, and there is not a thing the record companies can do to stop it), people are pirating more.I would much rather buy songs at a rate that benefits the record companies ($1 or $2 a song in the mp3/aac/whatever format of my choice), but as long as they insist on being so posessive about their songs, my only option is barely legal sites like allofmp3.

The world is geting smaller...
Personally, I buy all of my music from a Russian company myself...
-
Re:Wow
iTunes and other DRMed pay-per-download services are a fun curiosity. More music gets traded in an hour on KaZaA than gets downloaded from iTunes in a month.
Hell, even the Russian mafia does a better job of music distribution than Apple does these days. -

Re:Won't play on my MP3 players
Exactly, not to name the other digital media players that play MP3 (the defacto standard). I do not own the money to buy an iPod (and I find it quite overprized), but I bought an MP3 player which was like $80.
As for buying music?, after buying music in here I have not seen any other store that gives me the an approximatley so good service.

Re:Apple's arrival here in Australia..
Apple's is less restrictive. Try and find any music service with that range with zero DRM. I'll take the one that I can use in iTunes and burn to CD as many times as I want.
www.allofmp3.com. 0.02 USD per MB, choose from MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC, WMA and APE and select your bitrate of choice. All files correctly tagged. Zero DRM.
It's not a legal to buy from them everywhere in the world (at least not in the US), but if it's legal in your country go ahead and use the IMHO worlds best online music store... -
Re:Dear music industry..
You're absolutely right. If only the music and movie industry would turn into something like Allofmp3, I'd be a loyal and happy customer. With such easy downloading, a choice of encoding formats, and the option to encode on the fly to a bitrate of my choice, I wouldn't mind paying a buck a song, which seems to be the price for "official" online music.

Celebrating world intellectual property day
A person I know wanted to celebrate WIPD by legally purchasing music from Allofmp3.com. Deal w/ it biatches!
-
Re:consumers voicing their opinion?
Have you heard about Allofmp3, I find this place the best in balancing Quality/Price as you can have your CD in any format, I think you can download some Lossless format, even WAV and the price is proportional to the size (MB) of your download.
Having say that, some people find it offensive because of the good price, the legality is being questioned in U.S. but if you are outside I think it is alright. -
Re:What the hell is wrong with Canada?
Actually, whenever I knew I was going to be making a trip to Canada I would make a list of all the CD's I wanted to buy. CD's in Canada would be around $12 CDN, which back when the US dollar was a little stronger meant they were about $8 US. Now, the savings isn't so dramaitic, if at all.
Oh well, at least we can still import music from allofmp3.com. -
They did get one thing right
At least they have the best online music store in the world. That's got to count for something.
-
Thank goodness for the Russians!
All of MP3 is a viable replacement for these bittorrent sites offering music. I wish they'd offer first-run movies as well...

Indeed. The MPAA and RIAA could learn a lot from these guys.

I au contraire will advice you to go to allofmp3 and buy your music in a lossless format (or a very good ogg) without DRM or any other thing.

club.mp3search.comhttp://club.mp3search.com/also http://allofmp3.com/.
Heck, you can record all the streams you want with Replay-Radio. It was good enough that I bought it. Then I was finally convinced to shell out $10/month for a subscription to Rhapsody. Now I can record everything I want from Rhapsody. And I was a HARD CORE file sharer before. So there is indeed a price-point at which I'm willing to pay for music.
