Re:Suggestions...
(evil browser crash ate my first answer)
I don't read Japanese and therefore don't seek out raws, so this is by no means exhaustive.a) the scanlation groups. Some of 'em post raws in their forum, (like mangashare) and others may be willing to email 'em to you 'cause you're just using 'em for education.
b) Lurk's DAN bot has a decent selection.
c) Mangahelpers provides raws for a bunch of groups
d) Shoujo world, probably not your speed, but had to throw it out there. (Chinese and Japanese raws)
e) torrents, lots floating around on torrents. (I know some scan groups get theirs off Japanese torrent sites.)

Flame Retardant Suit now equippedDisclaimer: I am an Open Source user/advocate/evangelist. So save your educating flames for someone who needs them.
Back in the day, long before we had competing FREE browsers, we had to pay for em. I for one was happy Microsoft bundled What I considered "necessary" Applications with the OS. Why should we have to plop down (back then) $4000 for a PC and then run out and spend another couple hundred to $1000 for apps, just to listen to music or browse the web.Sure like everyone else here, I wish it wasn't IE. But at least you could browse the web. It wasn't the bundling we were upset with, it was the anti competitiveness of MS to OEMs who wanted to ship Netscape.
Skip ahead to present.
Personally I hope IE phones home to see that every Windows reinstall I've ever done shows Firefox download as the very first web destination. I used to replace the Firefox icon with IE's now I replace the IE Icon with this one. That is assuming I cannot convince them to switch to Linux.
I understand Opera being upset. But I don't see where they can complain anymore. They should focus their efforts on bundling their browser with hardware, like the Wii, and cell phones. Does doing so make their position hypocritical?
How many people still code for IE? I don't. If it doesn't look good in IE, I could care less. @work I force everybody to use Firefox. We put a best viewed in Firefox badge on our sites and fret not, Saving untold # of man hours and headaches.

Re:Flash drives
The great shame with Commodore was the waste of many advanced ideas that landed on their laps - PET, C64 chipset, Amiga... Heck the C64 was still being sold with the *same* 1Mhz clock speed at the end in 1992, 10 years after release.
Which is a good idea - changing the clock speed would basically make it a different computer. I remember trying a gadget called Super-CPU which basically ran a 20MHz CPU compatible with the venerable 6502. GEOS was a dream, but most games and even application software became unusable.
But yes, i agree - Commodore had a lot of great ideas which ended up dead and rotten due to poor, poor management. Well, at least i keep my memories... :) -
Re:Color theory 101Yeah, I used to be a printer and I get in all sorts of arguments about colour theory -- primarily with family who are designers and architects, you think they'd know -- anyway, I guess that's my punishment for being a colour pedant. No! That's not blue, this is blue! lol
BTW, there's a nice colour wheel here if you need to "show" someone.

PHP 5.2.x includes standard json encode/decoding (if you don't mind the limitations). For earlier versions, json.org lists 6 ways to do it, most of which require recompiling.

Re:A couple of stunning ones
I was shocked by photos showing the rover. The rovers aren't that big so the resolution was amazing. I'd love to see some shots of the "tree" formation like that. The general belief is the are some form of ice crystals but they must be amazing looking. They were quite large on the lower res shots.
I assume you are talking about these:
http://mmmgroup.altervista.org/e-trees.html
The new orbiter is about 5-to-10 times clearer than the one that took those "tree" photos. It has a big-ass camera, so if it can get over the right area of Mars, we could have splended images of those "ice trees". -

My Mac Mini can safe sleep fine, and it was a lot less hassle to set up than suspend2 under Linux.
SuspendNow software is useful too, so you can hibernate on demand. -
FOSS ahead of the curve again...Yeah, one of the main complaints you hear about Linux is that it isn't a developed gaming platform. Quite true, but in our proprietary software days, our household burned out on games. We'd buy the newest blockbuster, play it to death for a month, and then get bored and have to go buy another one. It cost us $40-$60 every time we got bored, and we were no smarter or more enriched for the experience. And that's the problem with Windows for us: it's a great game box that sucks at everything else.
We just got a Nintendo Game Cube for Christmas, and we actually took it right back to the store without even opening it. We just looked at the side of the box and saw the same Mario they've been selling us since what, 1992? We traded it in, amongst other things, for a web programming book for my spouse's site design, a Python programming book for me, some hardware. Games? We snarf LLGP or Wolvix and play that on the PC. Linux gaming is finally showing signs of coming into it's own!

Re:I'd remain anonymous, too,I use Resier 3.6 you insensitive clod!
Well, yes. Resier is the Way. (-:
Yah, and C/C++ doesn't scratch the surface of the development support in the GNU/Linux world. But I think the tail may wag the dog on this one soon: Anybody gotten the latest CD from the Linux Live Gaming Project http://tuxgamers.altervista.org/llgp.php ? Although the CD itself has several bugs to work out (DOES ANYBODY know what goat you sacrifice to make it start in something like Fluxbox? It tried all the Knoppix options, and they passed unheeded.), there are some games on it that rock, and quite a few more that are still pretty fair. Certainly not blockbusters, but a few of them remind me of the kind of titles I have paid money for in the past. Linux gaming is mushrooming every year, (I keep telling myself). In five years, maybe it'll have a few tricks to teach the corporates.

Re:heh
Things you might consider:
Kubuntu Live CD (Info at Kubuntu.org)
Games Knoppix (Although the 0.2 release is accidentally missing a file manager. Also, the 0.2 version is not a "upgrade" of 0.1 - it has a different list of games, though they do overlap.)
Linux Live Game Project
All three of these are based on KDE, and so should be relatively familiar-looking for a Windows user. If you are comfortable enough with "Mac-like" theme, you can also try:
Ubuntu Live CD (Info at Ubuntulinux.org)
All of these are live CDs, which means that you can boot into them and try them out to your heart's content, without harming your existing windows installations. Those 5 CDs (Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Games-Knoppix 0.1 and 0.2 and LLGP) are what I give out to people to try out linux... Because there are games, they don't feel like it's so scary...
In order to get used to the command line (if that is one of your goals) the following may be useful:
The Command Line - The Best Newbie Interface? (an alternative perspective on the "scary" command line)
and
The CLI Series at Linux.com (Start at the last one on the last page "alias cat and pipe meet grep" and work your way up at your leisure.)

Linux Live Game Project
With all the previous comments about LiveCDs with games I felt it might be prudent to mention the Linux Live Game Project which was recently mentioned here on
/.Another useful link for people looking for Linux games is, of course, linuxgames.org
-
No FPSI don't see any first person shooters among the games include in the LiveCD. There are a handful of free -- GPL or better -- shooters around like Marathon Aleph One. Unfortunatley the one shooter entry, Cube, was removed from the current version:
I didn't wrote jet a games list, you can refer to the old list, because there are few differences. From the old list there are only few removal (Cube is the only important removal) and there are some new entries (like Wesnoth and TORCS!). I will rewrite the list soon, stay tuned!

Not a winner
Hmm, I think Linux should be promoted as much as possible, but this avenue will probably be a dead end. I dug around on the website, and found this list of supported games... admittedly it is the 'old' list, but still apparently rather accurate. Here is the URL: http://tuxgamers.altervista.org/llgp/games-0.0.1.
p hp
Now, the simple fact remains that this is insufficient, and Linux can simple not be promoted as a gaming platform at this time. This may be promising news for software developers who may elect to use the Linux platform, but I don't think I'll be able to 'convert my friends to Linux'.
Although, I must admit such samplings as 'Penguin Solitaire', 'Penguin Minesweeper', 'Galaga' and 'Pingus - Enhanced Lemmings' do sound tempting.. especially the last. I just don't see it as a show stopper, or anything special. -
Crossplatform Ruby
I actually wish I had had these details all in one place when I was looking afew months back (abit of googling eventually showed all those pages).
Personally, I have found if you are really interested in RAD w/ Ruby + QT is fine for linux.
But Wx is cross platform and free! and tools like VisualWx which has support for WxRuby certainly help.
Unfortunately it is only on windows atm AFAIK -

It is true! mmm... maybe It was true.I think that the article writer got some good point: having a soundcard working with a 2.4.x kernel is a bit tricky. No direct support in the kernel, if you have to recompile the kernel you must download alsa and then compile it etc...
But now that ALSA is nicely integrated within the 2.6.x things are much more better!
Openss is dead, long live ALSA!

Re:YMMV
This guide to moving FC1 to 2.6 covers all the bases.
I think many people just grab Arjanv's RPMs or whatever, install them, and then wonder why the system blows up in their face, there is no easy answer to moving a 2.4-based box to 2.6 without a few modifications, regardless of distro. -

Re:Palm Pilot games - palm games
That is funny - even though I had a C64 I never heard of that game. See http://ready64.altervista.org/english/misc/. Check out the picture of the family enjoying Stroker 2 on their new C64.
I guess merging Stroker with the Palm was only inevitable in this age of frictionless e-technology. -
Re:Narf? You can read the official GameSpy response in the link at the top of this story, but the short of it is this: The "buffer overruns" you refer to are not the issue that brought this on. He published those and they were corrected by GameSpy quickly. However, when GameSpy wouldn't pay "consulting fees", instead of focusing on actual security issues, he quickly turned to hacking GameSpy servers and services, including publishing cracks for GameSpy software. Hardly the behavior of a "security researcher".
The bulk of his "research" consists of Game Cracks and Game Cheats / Exploits / CDKey Generators. In particular, the brute-force CDKey generators are particularly bad - they basically pound publisher CDKey validation servers with random keys as fast as possible, to try and find valid ones - creating a DOS attack in many cases.
