To complement your hands on experience
I found the following 2 books quite helpful:
http://www.amazon.com/Practice-System-Network-Administration-2nd/dp/0321492668/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1
http://www.amazon.com/UNIX-System-Administration-Handbook-3rd/dp/0130206016/ref=pd_sim_b_1
Neither is a "Do A,B,C and execute, voila! $service!" type of book. They're more about understanding the concepts. Once you understand the lay of the land you're generally far better able to solve things for yourself rather than relying on someone else's tutorial.
As many others have already said, virtualization and your home network are your friends. Being able to learn in a breakable environment is excellent.

Re:A hard whack from the ol' LARTMaybe because some of us actually like to learn new things and stretch ourselves.
.The problem is that people want to learn different things.
PC gamers expect the OS to recede into the background so they can get on with the game.
They are interested in mastering Fallout 3 not the intricacies of getting the game to work under WINE or Caldega.
--- and when they are done with Fallout, they will be moving on to Warhead, Far Cry 2. The next big thing in Windows gaming, whatever that may be.

Re:Robobus vs. stupid drivers
Don't get me started on SUV drivers.
I like to refer such wankers to a passage somewhere in "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot" (which, incidentally, I highly recommend as a great book even if you don't own a VW or work on your own cars) where the author's recommendation for road safety is driving as if strapped to the front of one's vehicle like an Aztec sacrifice... -
ETQW
ETQW all the way. Aside from it being an excellent game and being DRM free, you can get a full copy of it for $15 on Amazon.
P.S. it runs on Linux. -
Re:Errata
It'd be really nice if all Christians believed the way you do; then we wouldn't have all these silly arguments about creationism, the age of the earth, etc. popping up here.
I have yet to see a thread started where a christian injected that the earth is only 6000 or so years old. Every thread on every forum that I can remember in the 15+ years I have been on the internet, it is always someone making fun of the entire 6000 year thing that starts it. So maybe if people like you wouldn't go out of your way to bring it up, it just wouldn't pop up here. It's like the old She asked for it argument but you are actually asking for conversation on the topics when you bring the topics up and replying isn't criminal or immoral.
Many people like me would have a much better opinion of Christians and Christianity in general too. Unfortunately, millions of Christians think the Bible is something that must be interpreted literally (in its King James English translation, no less), and that anything that contradicts that (like the entire field of geology) is false.
This too is something I have never came across in real life. I'm starting to wonder if you aren't making connections in your head. I'm sure that there are some people who believe the bible is a literal word but I have never met one. Even the Seventh Day Adventist seem to think parts of it are representational. I'm not worried about anyone's opinion of Christians but I truly think your creating a controversy that isn't there and drawing your own strawmans to make it happen.
BTW, the King James version of the bible is the preferred version because of works like Dr, Strong who created the Strong's exhausted concordance. There are concordances by others and ones intended to explain other versions of the bible. A concordance is a reference of every word crossed between chapters linked to the original words with definitions and so on so you can get the entire original intent. This is why churches have bible study and no bible reading classes. This is also the reasons why some denominations differ in readings then others.
You might believe that way, but there's literally millions of Americans who do not. They believe the Earth really is 6500 years old. Most of them will probably be voting for McCain/Palin, since Palin also believes the same thing.
That's nothing but a cop out. Palin seems to energize people without even mentioning the bible or any of her beliefs in association with them. This is something else that I only see others bringing it up. And even with them bringing it up, they can only find her personal life aspects of her religion. She has not put religion into politics at all except to say that evolution and creation should share a spot so they can be thoroughly discussed. Big deal, I don't know why Evolutionist are so afraid of discussion over creation and evolution. They don't even have to be in the same courses either.
But here you are making an absurd claim that Palin believe the earth is 6000 or so years old and that everyone will be voting for he because of that claim. Total hogwash. With the war on terror, taxes, the economy, government waste, government intrusions, and all of the important issues at hand and you think people are more concerned with the earth being 6000 years old.
Do yourself a favor and shut up before you look like a bigger idiot. Inventing a controversy just do you can rail on it doesn't mean it exists. and it doesn't mean your some super hero battling the forced of god either. It means your a joker making shit up then complaining that it was brought up because someone interested in the content decided to comment in a way you don't like. In the end, your attempting to pick a fight over the same stuff that science practices in this area. That large vast majority of pe

Re:Wow!
I do not understand the point of this post.
Are you showing off your subtraction skillz? In that case, congratulations! Have a cookie from Amazon.
Are you incredulous? 14 year olds are not uncommon on the Internet, even back in (whatever the year would be, I can't subtract).
Are you making a joke? Do I deserve a "whoosh?"

Well, not really
TFA suggests that they only need a warrant to obtain this information from the mobile carrier, but in some cases this information is available from the devices themselves. The iPhone is a good example of this - software can easily be installed on the device (kind of like a LoJack) to report back GPS location, and the iPhone itself apparently keeps logs of GPS positioning, based on this book's claims. I would argue that this form of surveillance would be just as loosely managed as police placing GPS transponders on vehicles.

Re:Humanity groupthink?
If websites were voted on, I'm wondering if the web will turn into one giant human group think. The folks who are fringe would be buried into oblivion.
Yet, that's the base for the Google PageRank algorithm. The key difference is that individuals do not vote directly, but by linking in web sites.

The myth: Linux doesn't sell well
The Truth: Yes, it does. It is on half of the most popular netbooks on Amazon.com right now.
Westlake I suggest you get the facts before you post this "Windoze owns the market" nonsense again because it's provably false and lying in such an obvious way does not move your message at all. Not here where we know better.

Re:Lemme think...
>> So let me get this straight - you think that you are using the words "sanity" and "robbery" in the same way that most people would? Because that is what I'm talking about here.
If you're going to live here you should learn to speak the language. No I don't think most people in America would consider taxation robbery. Most people in America are raving psychotics with anti-social personalities. Just because something is popular doesn't make it right or even correct. On the contrary, when something is popular, that is a near certain guarantee that it is wrong. That should be obvious to any sane person who has ever opened his/her eyes and taken a look around:
http://www.amazon.com/Public-Opinion-Walter-Lippmann/dp/1605979201/
"But I can't be wrong! I am just like everyone else!" Of all of the ridiculous, ego-based babble that mental midgets use to justify their delusions, this is by far the most pathetic. Congratulations! You're just as out of your mind and stupid as the rest of these blundering bovines. I agree. You are definitely average, and your grasp of the English language is indeed indicative of the invalid level of semantic refinement in this country and on planet earth in general.
Robbery? I believe I defined the term when I used it. And the definition is consistent with its historical usage (check a dictionary). Robbery is defined as the aggressive act of taking someones property by force. Again:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rob
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/theft
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/steal
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/graftI could have also called it terrorism:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/terrorism
Taxation is the expropriation of wealth through violence (a.k.a. robbery to anyone with a 5th grade comprehension of English). If you don't think that it is, try not paying your taxes and see what happens or try finding a gallon of gas (or any other product) that hasn't already had taxes built into the price. If you don't like English, start your own language or use another. Call it "fdasjl;lfdsjlj" for all I care, it still doesn't change the fact that you are taking peoples property though brutal acts of violence.
You are the one playing semantic games, but you twist events 180 degrees until your guilt for your actions has been projected on to an agent of truth. This is the logic of psychotic projection, all things reversed until they are completely opposite. The reason they always hit the complete opposite is that people with diminutive and defective semantic circuitry are unable to think logically in more than one dimension: true and false. Since they can't accept true (without shrinking their ego), the only other outlet is false.
What is going on here is that you think what the state does is justified by the fact that it is being carried out by the state or by a ruthless mob under the rubric of "democracy". You cannot handle the fact that a word that you have negative connotations associated with (e.g. robbery) has been attributed an action committed by the state. To do so would force you to admit that in the past you have been a terrible human being by supporting such actions.
I know it's scary. You think that the ego and patterns of behavior that you have been programmed with are actually you. They aren't. Where does your ego come from? Is it really you? A menacing coward who expresses his impotence behind the cover and concealment of a voting booth because he doesn't have the fortitude or integrity to commit his crimes directly? Or is that just what you have been up until now? If you let it go, I p

Windows Driver Foundation vs. WDM
Microsoft could do something about it. It would just take dumping an entire driver model and replacing it something better though.
This is exactly what Microsoft did with WDF, released in December 2005 and shipped with all of the Windows Driver Kits released since then (including all of the Vista Beta kits).
WDF has two components: KMDF (kernel-mode) and UMDF (user-mode). In a nutshell, they are well-documented object-oriented libraries which implement much of the complicated synchronization logic and rules imposed by WDM architecture, freeing the driver developer to focus only on aspects unique to their hardware. WDF drivers generally have fewer lines of code, because thousands of lines of bug-prone WDM code is already implemented by the framework.
The transition process from WDM to WDF will take time. There are countless old WDM drivers written for Windows for nearly every conceivable device you can use on a PC (in fact, some consider this Windows greatest strength). It would be stupid to ditch all of this code. But for NEW drivers, this is the way to go.
Developer education is one key aspect. Now there is a book on WDF for driver developers that requires no previous WDM experience.

Re:right vs wrong and legal vs illegal
(Note, I am very libertarian)
I would disagree with you on that.
Laws should only intervene when your actions directly harm another person. So, only a subset of "wrong" should be illegal.
When talking about psychological harm "wrong" gets very muddy. Does protecting people under 18 from any sexual information help or hurt?
Is it wrong to be rude to someone? Should that be illegal?

Religion
This is really old news. I think I even read about in a Richard Dawkins book from the 80s. Daniel Dennette goes into it further in Breaking the Spell. You could say pretty much all of our beliefs have evolved and have some links, however minor, to our tribal origins. Religion and superstition are very closely linked. Religion is a group of superstitions that have been combined and given a back story. There are a lot of examples of how religious morality is linked to good evolutionary qualities, so it stands to reason that the superstitions that tribes had have turned into the modern incarnations of religion and other superstitions.

Re:You are using the Zune as an example?
The revised zune has taken the mp3 market by storm has it? Taken a chunk out of iPod sales? Oh wait, it hasn't.
Just to quantify that statement, as of this writing, Amazon's bestselling MP3 player list has iPods in the top 5 places, and 16 out of the top 25. There are also 2 Creative players and 6 SanDisks, along with a Zune at #16.
I don't think Apple is too worried just yet.
(PS: I don't own an iPod, so "fanboi!" whines don't hold much traction.)

Have you tried showing the publisher the Groklaw analysis? Or tried getting a real lawyer (not NYCL) to write up an opinion on how the ruling impacts your book?
There are also self publishing options, either through Amazon or through someone else.

Re:Racial Bigotry
Ok. Honestly, the best source I have found on the subject was this book, (lousy title, I know) but I don't have it available.
Anyways, on the logistics of all the animals fitting on the ark and feeding them, I think I will point you towards this page:
The author puts more theism into it than I would (paragraphs 2-5 are the most level-headed and have most of the relevant information), but the basic concept is the same as presented in the book I mentioned.
There was also a mention of floating islands in the book as possible refuges for some animals (I don't know how seaworthy they are, though). One thing he does not elaborate on very well is the hibernating (and the fact that the animals would need less food during that time, which I brought up in my previous post). The hibernating also takes care of most of the waste control problem (less food in means less waste out) and the predator/prey conflicts (you don't need to hunt if you are well-fed and sleeping alot).
As for disease control, I am not sure exactly how much weight to apply to that argument. I'm not a vet. I do know that I rarely get sick (and I am not the most sanitary of people), so maybe they were just lucky.

Re:And so my book won't be published either
Your publisher is a moron. The Lexicon book failed because it stole too many quotes from her books and failed to provide enough commentary to justify the practice. Your book sounds rather similar to this one, which is quite acceptable (and highly rated). Find yourself another publisher.

Re:I really need to change my fonts!Try reading these reviews. Notice a 1 star pattern? Maybe they got herpes.
An excerpt from the seemingly favorite:First of all, the game incorporates a draconian DRM system that requires you to activate over the internet, and limits you to a grand total of 3 activations. If you reach that limit, then you'll have to call EA in order to add one extra activation. That's not as simple as it sounds, since when you reach that point EA will assume that you, the paying customer, are a filthy pirating thief. You will need to provide proof of purchase, reasons why the limit was reached, etc, etc (it has all happened before with another recent EA product, Mass Effect). EA, of course, is not obligated to grant you that extra activation or even provide that service. In a couple of years they might very well even shut down the general activation servers, because "it's not financially feasible" to keep them running. What you will be left with is a nice, colorful $50 coaster. And you will be required to pay for another copy/license if you want to continue playing.
-
Re:It maters not what the review says
Comment needs to remain upmodded, as it looks like the backlash (presumably from EA) has begun. Apparently, Gamespot is now censoring reviews critical of DRM. Does EA buy advertising here at Slashdot?

Re:WWII
Perhaps they're still embarrassed by the Alan Turing fiasco, and don't want to ever bring it up again?
I think you've nailed it there.
Bletchly Park was the best British minds triumphing over the the best German minds.
Why else would they want to bury it, but for shame of Turing's treatment?Every time this comes up, I am compelled to recommend The Code Book by Simon Singh.
It has a gripping account of Turing's life and the cracking of Enigma. -

Re:http://thepiratebay.org/search/Spore/0/99/0
BACK TO TOPIC: Look at all the negative reviews on amazon (link) : http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000FKBCX4
I didn't understand the issue until I read this: "You get three installs. That's it. No install returned for uninstallation, or anything else. You install it three times, then you're out $50." I agree one-hundred percent. As a gamer who still plays ancient games like Red Storm Rising or Pirates or Populous, the last thing I want is a game that will stop working after I upgrade to my next computer (about two years time).
I want something to keep forever, not a rental.
-
The reviews
I've been reading the reviews at the Amazon.com review page and they've been coming in faster than I can read them! Almost all of them are hugely negative, citing shallow gameplay and draconian DRM. One guy posted a story about how he used up all 3 activations in his first day (different computers/partitions). There are only a small handful of positive reviews, and they read like paid advertisements. Each contains a statement to the effect that anyone who doesn't love the DRM is obviously an evil pirate.
I skipped Bioshock because of SecuROM. I pirated Mass Effect because of SecuROM. I think I'm going to skip Spore for the same reason.

Selling pretty well
A quick read through the Amazon reviews of Spore seems to suggest that the negative comments are already putting people off from buying the game.
This line from the product page seems to suggest otherwise:
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #1 in Video Games

Any way to transcode to divx on Linux?
While we're on the subject, is there any way to transcode DVDs to divx with a
.avi container on linux systems?I'm trying to create
.avi files similar to what I can download from torrents that will play on a DVD player that can also play Ultra Divx files. (see this player: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVP5140-Multiformat-Windows-Support/dp/B000F2KUK8/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1220573310&sr=8-1 ) -
Well, we know that other countries will.
Well, whether we put new vehicles into service or not, we can be damned sure that other countries will keep on motoring along. A few people in this thread have mentioned the Chinese space program. I would have *thought* that somebody would remember that the ESA has been launching craft for years now. But, for that matter, so have the Japanese. And India's program is going nicely. The Brazilian space program is a bit gunshy these days, but, make no mistake, they'll be launching more rockets some time soon. Though we have to wonder how they feel about the Guyanese launch capability, which has been a pretty serious thing for over ten years now.
Folks, there are more governments with space programs then there are well-known Linux distros these days. And plenty of them have or are well on the way to developing their own launch vehicles and facilities. And that doesn't even begin to address all the possible private actors. How many of y'all know how many organizations were vying for the original X Prize? A hell of a lot more than the three or four that most media outlets are aware of. And even that doesn't include some relevant players.
We're entering a world where many space programs are becoming more like seventies Silicon Valley startups than like NASA. For anybody to think that they understand what will be available in three or four years and how just shows that they either haven't looked into it, that they're very warped by Big Company Think, or that they've got their head so far up their ass that they're seeing daylight up their throat. -
Re:Place your bets now!
Er, no. The website you cited is Pakistani state sponsored historical revisionism and propaganda, and is widely disseminated by the Pakistan lobby for the purposes of self-comfort and glorification. Those are not the facts. Islam has no vested interest in segregating themselves from non Muslims. It's far more in tune with Islam that they coexist with infidels and wage demographic warfare until they become the majority and then impose Islamic dhimmi laws upon non Muslim subjects (as they have done for centuries). Read some more scholarly renditions of South Asian history, particularly that of secular scholars like Pakistan's own Ayesha Jalal and her book :
"Democracy and Authoritarianism in South Asia"
http://www.amazon.com/Democracy-Authoritarianism-South-Asia-Contemporary/dp/0521478626
Jinnah (the so-called "founder" of Pakistan) was using the "Two Nation Theory" as a ploy to gain political mileage. Most of the Deobandi-schooled militant Islamists in British India, led by the dangerously fascist Jamaat-e-Islami under Maulana Abul Ala Mawdudi (who, by his own words, wanted to implement an "Islamic Theodemocracy" in South Asia modelled on Fascist Italy with an Islamic face), were opposed to partition. When it became obvious as to what the Islamic agenda for opposing partition really was, the people turned in favor of the idea.

"Most mentions of Mario only have a deleterious effect on same."
Wrong. It's not the fact that you are into anything, it's whether you let it consume your life. i.e. do you do other things besides play games?

Re:more money than sense
People like to compare IBM to MS, and see MS slowing down, but then ultimately being successful like IBM. What people fail to realize is that IBM spent the money to make rock solid products.
Actually, IBM went from being a hardware company to a services company. When MSFT helps you design, install and optimize competitive products like IGS does with setting up Solaris servers connecting to EMC disk arrays. Realizing that money can be made off of more than just software licensing, then they'll be successful like IBM.
Go read ex-CEO Louis Gerstner's book, it wasn't typewriters, the mainframe or PCs.

How about Amazon...
I know Newegg is popular, but I've always felt their restocking fees were basically insulting.
Which makes me wonder how competitive a shopping list you could get using another company which has a much better return policy (something I find I appreciate a bit more for my components). -
Re:Mandatory short answer:
This can stream to a 360 via Windows media 11. Yes you need all the DRM bells and whistles to make it happen, but maybe not a bad deal if your in for it anyway: http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/ontv/ontv/ref=sv_atv_2 Has all the details for you.
