I have the same issues with OS/2 source code. Not been able to attract new and younger programmers and many of the source code is scattered on the web with the risk of being lost.

I'm doing the following:
1) I had organized all source code I was able to find on GitHub:
- Created a Organization on github - https://github.com/os2world
- Organized the repos in "named-categories"
2) Created a Wiki to organize the catalog.

India is at 2.51. In 2007 it was at 2.81. So if this trend continues, in a couple decades it will be below replacement.

Philippines is at 3.06. Right now the Philippines has very low per capita income - roughly comparable to India and Syria. Once this rises, the birthrate will probably drop. In any case, the Philippines forms less than 2% of the world's population and is not going to drive world population growth.

So basically the main issue is Africa. And really Africa has bigger issues than overpopulation, like civil war and dictatorship and malnutrition and malaria. But all these issues are connected to each other. If you can somehow help with one issue (I'm not saying that it's easy) then Africans will have more resources to put into defeating the others.

Both standard MAME and MESS compile out of the box on all major distros, and have the advantage of not having been forked and no longer updated for well over a decade. Seriously - there are several MAME and MESS developers who run Linux as their main OSes. Both of them even still support OS/2 out of the box if you're particularly insane.

The revisionism within the Bitcoin community about Mt. Gox is astounding. The truth is that the Bitcoin "establishment", as it was, was generally pro-Mt. Gox, and indeed some parts of the system continued to promote Mt. Gox long after the company went insolvent. . Probably the most notorious example was Blockchain.info (Archive.org has a gap of archives between December and July before anyone comments, but the fact I was able to make this tweet should confirm this image was current back in March.)

The scale of the Mt. Gox disaster was a failure of the system, of the consensus driven establishment that set up and supported Bitcoins. By both refusing to accept the need for some form of regulatory environment, voluntary or by legislative fiat, and the deliberate herding of newcomers to that company, the system showed itself to have major flaws.

Moreover though, it showed flaws that the community is unwilling to address, preferring instead to either use sophistry - from arguments that Bitcoin is independent of the environment it trades in, to the pretense that you can't trust US banks to manage your dollars because banks in Sierra Leone that trade in dollars aren't regulated - or just plain pretending what happened didn't happen, the "Oh, I knew Mt. Gox was going to be a problem six months before it went bust* and nobody was recommending it and everyone's always said keep your money in your own wallet and..." argument.

BTW, that asterisk next to the word bust? Funny thing: people really do make that argument, but Mt. Gox, while not bankrupt six months before it went bankrupt (well, duh), had by that point made it hard for people to take money out of their accounts. Most of Mt. Gox's victims are likely people who were customers before anyone "noticed something was wrong". But Blockchain.info was recommending them anyway.

Yes, some libertarians laughed at those who stored money at Mt. Gox. They did it after it became too late to do anything about it. There's always a group of self-described libertarians who laugh at victims of business failures. I've never understood why.

The EPA guidelines are in line with the level of risk: very, very little. If you want to cut your mercury exposure, don't stop using CFLs, stop eating seafood.

As for the Bridges case, you should read the Maine EPA's account. CFLs were new back then, and they had decided to use her case to learn more about what sort of advice they should give for dealing with broken bulbs. So they sent someone with a meter because they wanted to learn more, not because that's standard practice. The carpet was already intended for removal as part of a rennovation. They took readings all over the room. The only place with "high" levels was right where the bulb broke - not in the ambient air, not anywhere else on the carpet, not on the toys, not even under the carpet where it broke. I say "high" because even the levels right where it broke weren't actually high, just over Maine's long-term exposure guidelines (which is obviously not applicable to a temporary event). Moving the meter even six to eight inches away rom the breakage point dropped the levels way down. She was told that the bulb breakage was "of negligible health concern". However "the homeowner expressed particular nervousness about exposures to mercury even in low numbers", so they told her what she could do if it bothered her, one of which was calling a cleanup contractor. And of course any private cleanup contractor will charge you an utter fortune. The Maine EPA came back two days later after the story hit the news, before anything had been done in the house. The area where the bulb broke had dropped down below Maine's limit.

The case was ridiculously blown out of proportion.

One thing I found interesting right at the beginning was about whether information and knowledge should be free.

Later on they talk about a (presumably LCARS) Tricorder-like app disappearing from "the" app store, stongarmed by CBS without any criticism (and also genuinely wonder why there are no bluetooth sets shaped like Uhura's earpiece). So they seem "on board" with a strong "intellectual property" regime or at least put it in the "things fall down", "a hot stove hurts when you touch it", everyday-thruths-that-just-are-and-not-given-a-second-thought category.

Which brings us to the information that really should be free. Like JSTOR. Remember Aaron Schwartz? The biggest thing standing in the way of the dream of freely accessible knowledge is the crazy long copyright term. Now THAT is something to hold a discussion about! How many times on the various Star Trek shows does an "entire civilisation's collection of knowledge and culture" get uploaded to the Enterprise's computer, or the Earth's/Federation's science and cultural works uploaded by the Enterprise to an adversary that suddenly decides humanity is worthy after all?

The real reason why GOG doesn't include these films is three-fold:

1) There are already sites doing this (for free), e.g. the Internet Archive.

2) The quality of the original prints is often poor, restoring old movies requires great skill and is very expensive, and existing restorations are not public domain.

3) Most importantly, it's besides the point. GOG is trying to get the film industry to recognize the value of selling DRM-free movies, like the music industry did before them. Selling public domain movies would be plain counter-productive.

Here's hoping they'll succeed where others have failed before them.

For the cops on the front lines of the War on Drugs, the federal government's fixation with marijuana was deeply perplexing. As they saw it, the problem wasn't pot but the drug-related violence that accompanied cocaine and other hard drugs. After the crack epidemic in the late 1980s, police commissioners around the country, like Lee Brown in Houston, began adding more officers and developing computer mapping to target neighborhoods where crime was on the rise. The crime rate dropped. But by the mid-1990s, police in some cities were beginning to realize there was a certain level that they couldn't get crime below. Mass jailings weren't doing the trick: Only fifteen percent of those convicted of federal drug crimes were actual traffickers; the rest were nothing but street-level dealers and mules, who could always be replaced.

Police in Boston, concerned about violence between youth drug gangs, turned for assistance to a group of academics. Among them was a Harvard criminologist named David Kennedy. Working together, the academics and members of the department's anti-gang unit came up with what Kennedy calls a "quirky" strategy and convinced senior police commanders to give it a try. The result, which began in 1995, was the Boston Gun Project, a collaborative effort among ministers and community leaders and the police to try to break the link between the drug trade and violent crime. First, the project tracked a particular drug-dealing gang, mapping out its membership and operations in detail. Then, in an effort called Operation Ceasefire, the dealers were called into a meeting with preachers and parents and social-service providers, and offered a deal: Stop the violence, or the police will crack down with a vengeance. "We know the seventeen guys you run with," the gangbangers were told. "If anyone in your group shoots somebody, we'll arrest every last one of you." The project also extended drug treatment and other assistance to anyone who wanted it.

The effort worked: The rates of homicide and violence among young men in Boston dropped by two-thirds. Drug dealing didn't stop -- "people continued what they were doing," Kennedy concedes, "but they put their guns down." As Kennedy reflected on the success of the Boston project, which ran for five years, he wondered if he had discovered a deeper truth about drug-related violence. If the murders weren't a necessary component of the drug trade -- if it was possible to separate the two -- perhaps cities could find a way to reduce the violence, even if they could do nothing about the drugs.

In 2001, Kennedy got a call from the mayor of San Francisco that gave him a chance to examine his theories in a new setting. The city had experienced a recent spike in its murder rate, much of it caused by an ongoing feud between two drug-dealing gangs -- Big Block and West Mob -- that had resulted in dozens of murders over the years. Could Kennedy, the mayor asked, help police figure out how to stop the killings?

Kennedy flew out to San Francisco and met with police. But as he researched the history of the violence, it seemed to confirm his findings in Boston. Though both Big Block and West Mob were involved in dealing drugs, the shootings were not really drug-related -- the two groups occupied different territories and were not battling over turf.
