I'd say,,,
that being complicit in the trafficking of TONS of cocaine which was smuggled into the US and sold to American citizens in order to fund a dirty little covert war should've spelled permanent loss of freedom for Mr Poindexter and co. Instead he gets to play havoc with our freedoms. That's real justice for you.

Ask Val?
What we need is an 'Ask Slashdot' on this topic. Collect your questions, and then ask Val what the real deal is.

But people keep buying their stuff :(
The telemarketers numbers show that people buy the junk they sell. One of the people I work with has bought tons of stuff from them, including Direct TV, Carpet Cleaner, and weight loss stuff.
So long as there are people like my co-worker, these guys are going to keep at it.
As for me, I'm using the 3 tone way.

The Homepage of Carl Laurence Gonsalves -
Ironic...
I've seen the creator of PHP give a talk on more than one occasion about the history of PHP. Every time I heard this talk he would state the same thing: PHP is not a programming language.
Now here he is with a book titled "Programming PHP". Hmmmm...

Re:I suggest getting hold of one
Nope. I've done it. here All the current Latitudes have the same motherboards as the current Inspirons. 8000 > c800. 8100 > c810. 4000 > c600, 4100 > c610 etc etc.
-
Please slashdot my website :)
Here
I have collected a lot of information about Dell Latitudes and inspirons and made a website about it. Even how to use a Latitude Dock with an Inspiron Here. Enjoy! Remember dell charges like $500 for C/dock II's but you can get them off of ebay for $50 -
aw hell
or is that Here
so much for my +5 funny... forgot the frigg'n closing quote in the parent! I'm doomed to redundantville or flamebait town now. -
Re:Old news...Sorta
Oh, forgot the shameless plug.. My website I have some info there on what cards are compatable and what Dell's can be upgraded. (Yes I know the bottom half of the list is empty) Bet you didn't know that you can flash a Pentium based Latitude CP to a Pentium II based Latitude CPiD? Info's on my site on how to do it.

Konqueror works fine.
I just tried it using Konqueror 3.0.1, and here's a screenshot of what I get when I go to the web site. After clicking continue, it prompts me again. This is similar to what I see when I come across expired certificates. After accepting the certificate despite the warnings, I see the "You've been hacked" page.

Computer go has also been extensively researched
Actually, go is a very popular game world wide, arguably more popular than chess. It's true that the areas in which go is popular aren't the most affluent in the world, but there are a great deal of programmers working on go. A very wealthy Tawainese man, the late Mr. Ing set up a foundation to award $40 million (TWD) to the first go program to beat a 1-dan player. He also set up incremental prizes for each kyu level a computer could advance to. Literally thousands of programs have competed, and none can win against a one dan amateur, even with a 9 stone handicap.
Go is very unlike chess. Chess computers improve greatly with improvements in hardware. In fact, very straight forward chess programs with simple evaluation algorithms and minimal pruning can defeat master level chess players when run on modern PCs. One example is the ever popular TSCP . Go programs on the other hand do not improve notably simply by using a brute force approach. Handtalk, the former computer go champion plays less than one kyu better on an Athlon2000 than it does on a 386. For more info, check the links on Mick's Computer Go Page

Re:Ad
You may want to try blocking ads. I have an auto proxy configuration file that I point my browsers to on my home network. Any URL that matches a known ad URL, has the URL redirected to an Apache server that just serves up empty data. Any other URL goes out direct.
To help you get started, take a look at http://home.attbi.com/~ehood/ad-blocking.html The document is somewhat old, but is still mostly applicable. It also mentions some other ad blocking techniques.

Re:Mp3's work for indie bands
Another great thing about local bands is that you can get close to them without paying Ticketmaster a chunk of money, and without buying months in advance. Local bands are often grateful if you bring a camera and take their picture, and often don't mind you recording the show. Jim Infantino of Boston band Jim's Big Ego (http://bigego.com) told me directly a few years ago, "Please Napster our stuff!" Jim is a Slashdot reader, an opponent of webcasting fees, and turns out new MP3s every month.
Another great thing is that when you go to a show, you'll be exposed to 2-3 other bands. Many of them are awful... But one in 20 is really good, and you'll end up hooked on their music, too.
Got to love live local music.

Yea, nostalgia is great isn't it? We all remember our first video game, our first great job, and of course, the first time we saw this.

What a dry personality
No sense of humor at all! This guy sounds like a real prick.

Not the first time.
Apparently, Russia thought of a plan back in 1989, proposed by NPO Energia. It was to be 716 days in length, with a crew of 4 (only 2 would go to the surface for 7 days). The craft that would go to mars would be constructed in space, and 5 Energia-class heavy-lift boosters would take it up there. Read about the plan here. Apparently, the project never got off the ground, so to speak.

TeleZapper for free..I'm about to tell you how to dramatically reduce the number of telemarketers calling you. This method is usually done with a device called a TeleZapper but you can achieve the same effect for free. What's a TeleZapper? Read on.... The TeleZapper is a device that plays the first tone in the three tones that precede the telephone company's historic "This number has been disconnected" message. The telemarketing dialer listens for that tone, and when it is present the dialer assumes the number is disconnected, The result is the telemarketing dialer will immediately disconnect and delete your phone number from it's list. I've seen the TeleZapper for 50 bucks, but you can achieve the same effect for free. How you ask? Simple, just record the "disconnected" tone at the beginning of your answering machine message or voice mail. After a few weeks of letting your answering machine screen your evening and weekend calls you'll achieve the same effect as a $50 TeleZapper. Where do you get the sound file?? Right here at this website: If you have the time read the rest of this guys site he has a lot of good stuff about getting telemarketers off your back.
