What do you expect
when the contracting agency can't acocunt for $1 trillion? That's more than the rest of the world spent on their military last year. With that kind of accountability, I'm amazed any project gets over 80% done.

Re:Bored of the Rings....I find imdb's phrasing with the passive voice incredible. "It was reported that Keanu Reeves volunteered to give up a claim to a share of ticket sales amounting to around $38 million when producers feared that the film would never recoup the cost of the special effects." It was report by whom? Someone who thinks Reeves is a moron, apparently. The film made almost that the first weekend:
The Warner Bros. sequel to 1999's "The Matrix" took in an estimated $93.3 million from Friday through Sunday, capturing 59.8 percent of the total gross of the weekend's top 12 films, according to studio estimates.
The original film grossed more than $400 million. I'd bet that they expect to (and will) make a truck-load of money on this film. -
'Matrix' Geeks acting badly
Hissing 'Matrix' fans reloaded w/ tickets, popcorn
Stephanie Paterik
The Arizona Republic

Hard-core Matrix Reloaded fans threw popcorn, pounded on the projection room window and ran screaming from the theater when a projector broke during a first-night showing in Chandler.
Hundreds of people waited hours at Harkins Chandler Fashion Center to see the highly anticipated Matrix sequel at 11 p.m. on opening night Wednesday. A projector lamp broke during the heavily advertised freeway chase scene.
"The movie was ruined," said Ward Andrews, 28, of Chandler. "You're excited, you're tense and then you don't get to see the key sequence in the film."
The audio continued to roll but was drowned out by people yelling and shaking their seats. One man climbed on someone's shoulders to pound on the projection room window, said Aubrey Johnson, 22, of Chandler, who waited five hours to see the show.
The problem was fixed in 10 minutes, but it was impossible to rewind and show the missed two minutes, said Harkins' Jackie Faubus. People who left were given two movie passes each. Those who stayed got coupons for free popcorn. -
charities, surveys and calls on behalf of politici
Most charities are scams. There's no guarantee that they are completely non profit. Who gives a shit about helping other people anyway?
Surveys are meaningless too. Do we really need more demographics like this?
Why the fuck is it acceptable for politicians to call people. They sure as hell aren't going to call people themselves. It's just going to be more and more recorded greetings to vote for Joe Political Science Fag.
The worst part about telemarketers is there is nothing you can do about them. Caller ID doesn't work. Telling them not to call back does not work. The Telezapper doesn't work. You can't threaten them, or you will get in trouble. You can't sexually harass them or offend them or you will get in trouble. The only thing that sort of works now is to get a cell phone and ditch the land line. Who knows how long that solution will last though.
To all you crazy people and militant cults out there: i.e. Scientologists, the US Postal Service, Al Queada, those white guys in the woods in Michigan with all those machine guns etc.: if you are reading this, please torture and kill all telemarketers. Allah will be proud.

Re:10mbps For The Healthy
How about gold or silver?
Silver, the best conductor, would be great at improving throughput. It is also one of the modern-day snake oils in the form of "colloidal silver" which was popular during that Y2K thing as it was believed to prevent you from getting sick. Stan Jones, the libertarian senate candidate from Montana, made his own concoction and drank it. It ends up, if you consume enough, your skin will turn a pale blueish-grey and you will look like you are dead. That's what you get for beleiving Y2K hype...
Also, at Wegman's today, I saw some "7 Layer Opera Cake," topped with 23-carat gold leaf. The lady in charge of all the delicious treats asured me that the gold is in fact edible, and adds a distinct taste to the cake. Intrigued, I bought the $4USD delicacy (which was a whole 100 cubic cm in volume). It was really good, but I'm sure the gold was entirly unnecessary (I could detect no difference in the taste in the bites with the gold leaf). I should have tested the resistance of my skin with my multimeter both before and a while after eating the cake. What would really be funny is if it did in fact make a difference. Maybe I'll try again sometime.
You might want to try the cake (very yummy, even for 4 bucks), but keep away from the colloidal silver stuff. -

This article compares Gateway's 2.8 MHz P4 Profile 4 to the 800 MHz iMac. At 1,024x768 resolution, the Gateway does 66.2 fps to the iMac's 62.5 fps in Quake III arena.

Not Slashworthy...You haven't heard of them because the story I submitted was rejected. (Whine, Whine). Jimmy Buffett's label is going after artists who want more control. His hook is a $5/cd royalty rate, rather than $1-2/cd. The catch is that the label doesn't spend anything on promotion. It works for him - he's sold a million copies of his last two albums. From the article:
Mailboat's roster is growing and includes a diverse array of acts from the heavy-metal band Poison to pop-blues artist Boz Scaggs and country-rocker Maria McKee (of Lone Justice fame). Poison has already released music on Mailboat (which sells direct to retail), and the latter two acts will release their first Mailboat discs soon.

Re:This is why Apple isn't dead
The difference is that Apple want to sell me yesterday's performance at today's price. If Apple would sell me a 800 MHz G4 for what it costs to build a low-end P4/Athlon system with a budget GeForce 4 card, I might be interested.
Interesting how "yesterday's performance" stacks up to "today's performance in this comparison of P4/G4 in consumer computers.
Although most P.C.-users seem to understand how an Athlon can be faster than a P4 at higher megahertz, or that a different architechture like the Itanium can be faster than either of them at a lower megahertz, no-one seems to be able to afford this kind of understanding to the PowerPC... despite the evidence. Oh well... -

Nation Was and IS founded under God...
Now, I realize many won't agree with this. In this forum I'm sure to draw a lot of fire, but had to speak my mind. Many will dispute it, try to quote founding Father's out of historical context, not to mention tell out and out lies to attempt to discredit the notion; but this country was founded by people who believed in God and this Nation's laws and documents of governance readily proclaim it. The Constitution makes reference to a fundamental belief in God (4 times I believe). Congress & the Supreme Court makes reference to it in every session. Our money refers to it and our Pledge of Allegiance pays homage to it. The Separation of Church & State has nothing to do with the separation of "God" & "State" or "Religion" & "State". The whole point of that provision was that no "Church" would or should have dominion to dictate to the Government. That doesn't mean that as a nation we can't subscribe to a belief in a higher power.. that being God. Nor does it mean that we shouldn't promote our belief in God in our Government Processes and laws. When interpretation of the law is left to those who can't think for themselves, but rather choose to distort the Constitution for their own purposes.. it's a bit sad. What brings all of this up? (In case you just happen to stumble into this...) This surreal ruling by a S.F. Federal Judge. (Which is currently On Hold). A ruling called "ridiculous" by our President and disputed by politicians and civil servants across the gamut. I believe in a person's right to believe in God, or not. I believe in a person's freedom to make their own choices; to the extent they don't override or inhibit another person from exercising their right to do the same. That's what our forefathers spoke of when they discussed those "unalienable rights". (so noted in the Federalists Papers) I realize that the father and the ACLU are trying to make a point, and they think they're in the right, but truth be told it's the inspired laws and constitution of this land, derived by people with faith and hope in a higher power, that give them the right to "choose" to not believe. They want to separate Church & State, but have missed the entire point of the argument; which actually has precious little to do with Schools and more to do with allowing religion to influence government. People will argue that the forefathers didn't believe in God, or more specifically Christianity. Does the pledge say anything at all about a "Christian God"? It simply says "God", a higher power, someone who rules above us all, and someone whose existence is indisputable. (Though many will try and fail to belabor the point.) Benjamin Franklin has said, "Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters." The 2nd grade student (who probably didn't care one way or the other and only became distressed after being bantered on the subject by her father who is taking this issue to court to further his own personal beliefs, and to further the liberal agenda, rather than let his daughter learn and make an informed decision for herself.) was never forced to stand and recite the pledge. Sure, one could say she might be intimidated by the entire class standing, and reciting the pledge, but that's what's great about America: 1)You have the right to choose. 2)The majority of the people believe in God 3)Each of us has the right to learn to accept, respect and perhaps even revere people who think, act or choose to worship in ways different than we do; while receiving the same courtesy from them. 4)We choose our strengths, and pick our battles. 5)Only we can allow someone to make us feel inferior. This cannot be done without our consent. In this day of Political Correctness, too much emphasis is being placed on "not offending a single person" instead of learning to appreciate and celebrate the actual differences and rejoice in the striking similarities that make us humane and feeling people. Diversity does not mean that we must all think and act alike. It does not mean that we should all believe the same things. It does mean that we should appreciate and respect each other's differences. People need to be strong. They need to let more "roll off their backs" and not rise so quickly to offense and litigation. They need to think for themselves, rather than letting their social or ethnic backgrounds "tell" them how or what they should think. George Washington explained it as such, "Human rights can only be assured among a virtuous people. The general government . . . can never be in danger of degenerating into a monarchy, an oligarchy, an aristocracy, or any despotic or oppressive form so long as there is any virtue in the body of the people." I've lived outside the U.S., in a country where they did not enjoy the same liberties and freedoms that we do. A country where people were just as diverse as we are here, and yet people did not consider themselves as white, black, or yellow. They all spoke the same language and were patriots of their own country. They appreciated and respected each other. They mingled and socialized freely. It was refreshing to be accepted among them, yet here where we have more freedoms and privileges than many know how to manage, people go out of their way to be offended, when it would be so easy to think... step back... and respect... Patrick Henry once said "Bad men cannot make good citizens. It is when a people forget God that tyrants forge their chains. A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom. No free government, or the blessings of liberty, can be preserved to any people but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality, and virtue; and by a frequent recurrence to fundamental principles." If you believe in God, and agree with the pledge the way it's currently written, here's a petition you can sign. I'm sure there are others, but let your voice be heard.. write your congressperson, the president, the legislature, Congress, the President, the Mayor, the School Superintendent, whomever! Heaven help the people of the United States that the majority of us never forget God, lest we succumb to those who hate us and would make us their prisoners and hasten our demise. May the Lord bless us and inspire those that lead our nation to remain true to him, to guide us in righteousness and virtue. Until Next time... Icewedge

Double standards
Wasn't it just a few months ago that we were bitching about the fact that a member of N'Sync was trying to get into space any way he could? Interestingly, he recently had minor heart surgery with a possible motivation to be prepping for training. Sure you'd pay millions to go... but would you also go under the knife?

Milk is NOT better for 70% of the world...Did you know that 70% of the world's population is lactose intolerant?
Milk is not better for you than Coke, because, from an evolutionary standpoint, mammals have internal mechanisms that prevent them from properly digesting lactose after they are a certain age. It's a natural weaning process. This is discussed in most evolution/natural science college classes. The reason 30% of our population is able to digest milk is that that percentage of the population had ancestors in northern Europe who were goat herders -- those ancestors needed to be able to digest milk at any time. Yes, almost all of the people who are able to digest lots of milk at any age are white and originally from Europe.
The milk commercials, however, neglect to tell people this, and instead label the vast majority of our population "lactose intolerant", like it's some kind of disease or something. (They even sell a "cure" in the form of Lactaid and other pills!) Americans/Europeans also don't often realize that sending milk in CARE packages to other countries makes people sick more often than not.
I know this is a little offtopic, but it's an important fact that most people don't realize, and the brainwashing of those damned milk commercials doesn't help. I would also like to state that I agree with the poster's main point. The commercials for milk even prove it: TV sells you what you want to hear and not necessarily what is the truth.

The Bert hidden in the poster was a covert infidel detection mechanism...anyone that saw it and started laughing is obviously a spy...
This makes me wonder if the poster-maker is related to the guy who set himself on fire while burning the American flag. -

Re:Campaign finance reformWhile I absolutely agree with you about the importance of campaign finance reform, I'm not so sure about McCain. Like you, I like the fact that he stands so strongly on the campaign finance reform issue but I'm reluctant to forget his membership in the infamous keating five
