Re:Linux?It isn't just
/., etc. I read a number of political blogs every day, and I found out about all of them through other sites I frequently visit. This isn't so much a complex social phenomenon of "20% have 80% of the wealth/traffic," but a more simple word-of-mouth phenomenon. In my case, I read National Review Online's a lot, and, after 9/11, they linked to Instapundit and Andrew Sullivan quite a bit. Since NRO is a large site, I expect many other people were exposed to the excellent content of those sites as well. From the two blogs, I found links to blogs those authors find interesting, like James Lileks.I used to run a frequently updated humor website, and most of my traffic were people I knew from the Badassmofo.com forums and people they knew (this was a few years back, before "blogs" as such). This whole deal is really a word-of-mouth phenomenon based on people who trust the opinion of friends, a popular website, etc.

political blogs and E/NMost of the popular blogs deal with politics and current events, and are created by lawyers or professional writers, not techies. The Silicon Valley connection seems to relate more to blogs that descend from the E/N webpages that were popular a few years back.
E/N stood for Everything and Nothing, a "timewaster" page about silly news articles, bizarre Flash movies from Japan, and other amusing stuff the author finds on the web, plus commentary and rants that put them in context. badassmofo.com is a good example, as he's a tech worker who has time to kill scrounging the 'Net. His page used to be considered E/N a few years back, but now would be thought of as a blog.

Kill The Scientists
Lemme tell you about things that I don't trust our scientists with: the orbit of the planet. Still, do you think this is going to be the next movie craze, like the whole asteroid cataclysm thing? I can just see it now, Bruce Willis, suiting up to save the world yet again. Sharkey

Lesser of two stupids
I guess we could make the observation that Gore now wants to filter and regulate his own invention, but that'd be a bit redundant, don't you think?Personally, rather than vote for those morons, I'm going to vote for my Darth Vader Lego Keychain. He's done a bang-up job guarding my keys, and I doubt we'll notice much difference voting a hunk of plastic into office rather than a block of wood or a coke whore. Sharkey

I worked with that guy
I actually had to work with that guy at one point. At my last job we started using Pixelon's services for streaming movie trailers over the internet. Our first webmaster chose them because they broadcasted the Anaheim Ducks games. Their software was alright, but it was still only for broadband use. Anyway, I was wierded out by that guy's name, because I worked with a guy named Michael Fenne. And I remember him saying something about how his name was unique, and nobody else's in the world was spelled that way. Then we stopped using their services all of the sudden, and I wondered what the Hell was going on. So I ask my coworker Mike Fenne what happened, and he says that the feds think that he's the one that ran Pixelon. He didn't even know about the company, so obviously he was a little confused. Guess the FBI was confused too, because the names, and places of business were a little too similar to be coincidental. I guess it's a good thing that they found the impostor. He was a whack job anyway, and the company was like a rabid dog. They used to call all the time after the scandal first broke because they still needed clients. A very strange situation indeed. This made me think of something...
Would we need an entire spaceship to get all the damned unused AOL CDs off the planet? I mean, you can only use so many of them as coasters before they end up in the garbage. If everyone in America got 15-20 of those like I have, it'd take a couple of rocketships to get the billions and billions of wasted space off the ground. Still, they make effective weapons if you just sharpen the edges a little bit. Sharkey

Info on digital projection techniques
First off, the first actual live presentation (non trade show, non test environment) of a digital projection in a theatre was on June 18, 1999, Star Wars Episode 1. When I saw that show, (which wasnt that great, too pixelized at times) we spoke with the DLP projection guy to see how much info we could squeeze out of him. He said that the movie itself was around 500 Gigs, and was stretched across 15 or so hard drives. He went on about it's true XGA resolution, millions of mirrors, and whatnot. If you're really interested you can find all of the white papers here:

Depends on what you're looking for, but...OK, here's a good list to go by to start you off... Classic Anime by Hayao Miyazaki Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind
One of his first works, an amazing film, and an even better manga series. The story follows a young girl in a post-apocalyptic future, where jungles of toxic plant life has taken over. She attempt to understand and live among the forest, rather than see it destroyed by other humans. Highly reccommended. Laputa, Castle In the Sky
Again, amazing art and a fantastic story. It follows a young girl named Sheeta who holds a mystical stone that will unlock the treasures of the Laputa. This stone makes her the target of government agencies and sky pirates. Topped off with some of the greatest music in an anime that I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Princess Mononoke
Probably the most popular Miyazaki film, very easy to find here in the US, and it was in theatres (art houses) for a short while. It's sort of based on Japanese folklore, a story about man and his fight with the surrounding environment. Some of his best work to date. Here's a good review if you're interested.
Fun/Action Guyver
This is just a fun anime series to watch. No real significance in the plot, but its got some good animation and a lot of good action. A boy named Sho Fukamachi finds a Bio-Booster armor, which transforms him into an alien fighting machine. The armor belonged to an evil corporation, controlled by alien/human hybrids who want to conquer the Earth. Gundam
This one should go without saying. One of the biggest anime series' ever in Japan, plus with Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network, its easily accessible. Macross Plus
If you don't remember Robotech from your childhood, then your childhood must have sucked. Awesome stuff, not much of a fan of the movies, though.
Other Reccommended Wings of Honneamise
Amazing animation, and a great story. Sort of an alternate world story, a young boy named Shirotsu wants to become a pilot, but ends up having to join the Space Force. (sort of like joining the foreign legion, last resort kinda thing) He ends up, through a series of events, attempting to become the first man to go into space. Just avoid the crappy dubbed version if possible. The Mysterious Cities of Gold
I cant say enough good things about one of my favorite series of all time. It follows a boy named Esteban in the early 1500s, who seems to have the power to bring out the sun. He was orphaned at sea, and has lived in Spain his whole life. Through a series of events, he sets off for the New World (America) to locate El Dorado, the cities of Gold. An amazing series, somewhere around 45 episodes. Also, the greatest anime soundtrack (IMHO) ever. If you didnt catch it on Nickelodeon as a kid, you missed out. I (thankfully) have all of the episodes on tape, so I'll be able to keep it forever. If you can get copies, then you're extremely lucky, since they don't make them and never have.Thats all I can really think of right now. Those are some of the more interesting anime's I've seen. Hope it helps

Watch out, old bastards!
Well, I'm a webmaster, and have been since before I was twenty. Been doing it for awhile now, and I havent really seen any web programmers over 30. Although, at my current job, there's nothing but database programmers who are over 40. I havent seen one younger than 40 yet. But all the techs, web programmers, and newer technologies go to the younger guys. I guess it could be that we grew up doing nothing but sitting in front of a computer screen, but I've learned almost everything I know either from self teachings or by an older coder showing me the ways. I ain't one fer' that fancy book learnin'. Hopefully the ages will naturally balance themselves out over the next decade, or I'll be out of a job soon

Metallica ain't winning any new friendsAs if people needed any more reasons to hate Metallica.
(For added effect, it handed the names over on 60,000 pages of paper instead of simply using a few floppy disks.)
I saw a news report on that this morning, and how the guys from Napster took one look at the stack of paper, and said, "Uh... give these to us on a disk, and maybe this process wont take two years, dumbass." If you ever see Lars in an interview about it, he's a total idiot. He has no idea what he's talking about, he's basically quoting what the lawyers told him. I'd imagine that they were just following their record label's lead with the whole thing, it got blown out of proportion, and now they can't just back out. I say good, maybe now they'll stop tarnishing their former glory with the repeated piles of crap that they produce today. Sharkey

"You've got your fiber layer, and you're going to carry some number of wavelengths on each fiber -- the term that is used is lambda for wavelength, so lambda means color, really. One fiber can carry a number of colors -- there could be as many as a hundred, maybe even more. Make sure that processor is blazin' fast
And an assload of RAM doesnt hurt either. Ive done editing on a Mac with a 500MHz processor and 256 Megs of RAM and had it run pretty smooth, and I've edited on a 233 Pentium with 64 Megs of RAM and have it eat shit on anything over a Gig spacewise. Premiere is a pretty damn good program, if you're into Adobe products you should be in love with the software. Some interface issues, but overall the best I've worked with. For compatibility issues alone, Id go with Windows/Premeire. Sorry, I love love Linux as much as the next guy, but not for digital video editing. Sharkey

This is the start of something...
This was a fairly informative article, and it brought up a good point. How are they going to regulate information and services which are illegal in some areas and legal in others? There are quite a few ways that this whole thing could go, this isnt the first time that a new medium has had trouble on a global scale. I think that the most likely course of action to be taken, is that individual nations will have to work together when governing Internet relations. Joel is right, I can't see a single orginization on Earth that could effectively govern the Internet. But it could (possibly) work if the Internet-capable nations of the world worked together, instead of for themselves, as the author pointed out. Sharkey

Paying Bills has worked for me so farI've been paying bills online through my bank for awhile now, so has my roommate, we havent experienced any problems. The only problem I could forsee is data loss and then the resulting final notices and repossesions. Oh the HORROR! Ah, its a pretty good system thus far, and their privacy statement makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, doesnt it?
The privacy and security of your personal information is the foremost consideration of the Paytrust service. Paytrust will never sell any of your personal information -- contact, financial, bill history -- to any other company, period. Unlike many billers who routinely sell their customers to direct marketing organizations, Paytrust keeps all subscriber lists confidential. And, unlike many other web sites, Paytrust does not depend on advertising for revenue. Paytrust is completely committed to safeguarding your personal information and protecting your privacy.

SPAM... MMMmmm....
You know, people are seriously over-critical of Spam. Its never going to be eliminated, and only those who aren't super-protective of their e-mail will get it. But that's the same with junk mail, isnt it? I mean, that's what P.O. Boxes are for, right? Anonymity and filtering? Same deal with Spam. I have public e-mail accounts for the inevitable Spam to go through, and more private e-mail accounts for only the messages that I want. Holy Crap, we're all gonna get sued
Man, dont a few thousand websites do that sort of thing? How the Hell can Amazon think of patenting such a broad idea? I remember when Amazon first came about, I was happy because now I could buy books online, and this would usher in more online stores for everyone's convenience. Then big businesses took over the web and are trying to ruin it for everyone. I work for a company as a webmaster, and I constantly get proposals from companies who want to provide a particular service, as long as they get exclusive access to distribute our data. But what these chumps dont understand is that you can't put a hamper on information over the Internet. It's like trying to plug a showerhead with chewing gum. It ain't gonna stick, kids. Same deal with Amazon. Putting retarded patents on broadly generalized ideas is just going to piss everyone else off. Damn lawyers have to screw up everything. Sharkey
