Re:The problem with monopoly
It is a problem when you can't boycott the "do no evil" company because there is no competition.
There is Baidu.

Re:Partly their own fault
Don't get me wrong. I think Google should fry if they're blocking competing search engines from their browser. But:
Google also owns duck.com and points it directly at Google search, which consistently confuses DuckDuckGo users.
They wouldn't be so easily confused if the DuckDuckGo landing page didn't look nearly identical to Google's landing page. Contrast to Bing, Yahoo, Ask, Startpage, Qwant, Yandex (#1 in Russia), Naver (#1 in South Korea). The only other major search engine which makes the same mistake of copying Google too closely is Baidu (#1 in China).
Because there's just so many ways to visually format a search website.

Re:good, and more of that is needed
You must speak to very special people, or be a liar Among the Chinese I meet frequently ( in China ), they have very good knowledge of things, and has their ow opinions for sure. They are well informed regarding Tianmen square, Ai Weiwei, Liu Xiaobo, Taiwan etcetc. - No they are not writing an article in a newspaper about it. But claiming they are unknowing is not true. As traveling in both China and US frequently, I often feel the Chinese are better informed than the Americans. And better at seeing their own flaws, and understand them. I know more brainwashed Americans than brainwashed Chinese. And for Liu Xiaobo, you can just use www.baidu.cn ( Chinese "Google" ) and search for his name. 431000 hits. http://www.baidu.com/s?ie=utf-...

Re: No - Much ado about nothing
Yes but Chinese companies like Baidu, TenCent and Alibaba are comparable to Google, Facebook, and Amazon
Baidu's main AI lab is in California.
Most of the researchers there are Americans. -
Re:Save us President Trump from outsourcing
Save us President Trump from outsourcing most of our tech manufacturing to China!
You have it backwards. The Chinese are outsourcing to America. The biggest Chinese AI researcher is Baidu. Baidu's AI research lab is in Sunnyvale, California.
-
Re:I would expect that to be somewhere in China.
What does the USA have to offer anymore?
A productive and cooperative workforce. I lived and worked in China for several years. They spend way more time on backstabbing and petty office politics. Organizational loyalty is rare. Since the company doesn't trust the workers, information and decisions are compartmentalized, which degrades productivity even more.
If you need someone to turn a wrench on an assembly line, China is great. If you need innovation and teamwork, America is a much better choice. Even Chinese companies like Baidu have their research division in California.

Re:Close Up Shop
I would hope that corporations faced with these unreasonable demands simply close up shop in the country. Google CEO going to go to jail? Well, Google pulls out of France and has no presence. Good luck French people with your search queries. If a corporation caves to one country then it will just embolden then next country. Better to draw a line in the sand and tell them to fuck off.
Yeah that worked well in China didn't it.

Come on, click on that link in TFS! Or try using a search engine first if a term isn't familiar. Even Baidu has it. First link: English Wikipedia article, second link: Human flesh search, ban or not China.

Baidu
What do you mean by "all major services" have you forgotten Baidu. The do search, user submitted videos, cloud storage, cloud service hosting, etc. etc. I can even download Dr. Who episodes.

Re:Past their time
The X5 is exported from US to China, because BMW tend to set up production lines for most of its models in just one factory, they are also prohibitively expensive in China (cheapest model is US $95K) (baidu search here). You will also notice the Axis powers tend to set up their factories in "right to work" states, so no unions to speak of.
Interestingly, I have been in a Chinese sensor factory and chatted with the managers about what make them different from the other supplier of that part, a company in Germany. In the manufacturing floor which had a total of one worker watching the machines, I was told "This machine comes from Austria, this from France and this from Germany. There is no savings from running them here rather than Europe." Then I was taken to the testing/testing floor, with 200-300 identically dressed women with a oscilloscope on their desk and a vernier calliper in their hand. "Here's where we make 100% of our money, either the Europeans don't test by hand and we win on quality, or they do and we win on price." So the Chinese understand the merits of automation and do use it, but they also keenly realise 100% automation is not usually in their favour economically. Another thing about Chinese companies is they have a very small lead time on production compared to anyone else because they are far more willing to use man power to make up for the lack of a jig or any other gap in automated manufacturing. The Chinese will do things in very painful, labour intensive ways if they think it will achieve their goals, especially if that job can be delegated away from the decision makers.

Re:it's the children that suffer
China is a bit behind, but it isn't in the 1850's. Child labor (defined as employment of people under 16 years of age) is illegal, and there exists compulsory education for children (as best as can be implemented in practice, of course), the same as any modern country* I'm quite certain that Apple and the Chinese government are on the same page with regard to their moral/legal stance on child labor. What bugs me is that there's no mention of the local government taking charge on the issue, and that Apple is tasked with doing what the government should be doing.

He said it: stop the business in China altogether. That'll show 'em chinese oppressors, they'll suffer! Because chinese overlords really need Google, and it's not like there's any other search engines in China where people will flock despite it being censored as well.
Oh, I know, if Google's gonna not just talk the talk about not being evil, they should walk the walk, create a mercenary army and overthrow chinese government.
(On a side note, $any_corporation_name + mercenary army capable of overthrowing governments sounds like a nice scenario for a distopia)

What the... How is Baidu independent?
If you don't want your search results filtered by US, use Yandex or alternatively Baidu.
Yes, if you rather have your search results filtered by Russia or China. Yeah, communist shadow filtering where you can't see the invisible hand hiding sites is SO much better than most US court filtering that are open enough to actually be published, and not themselves censored.
Yandex and Baidu are completely independant search engines.
Maybe on Bizarro World, not on Earth. Independent from aggregate results of other engines, but not independent from censorship. Baidu might possibly the most heavily filtered site on the planet.

For non US-filtered search results
If you don't want your search results filtered by US, use Yandex or alternatively Baidu.
There is also European StartPage / Ixquick, but it's more for privacy. It aggregates results from Google and other search engines, so US censors still apply. Yandex and Baidu are completely independant search engines.
Sadly, this is what US has become. -
Re:Google vs China
That is a possibility I hadn't been too concerned about. If we were to assume that all traffic originating from the IP range starting with 119.63.196 and identifying as "Baidu" is legit, then all the "Baidu spider" traffic I have seen thus far has indeed been from the Baidu spider.
Of course, that may or may not be a reasonable assumption. I can't read Chinese anywhere near well enough to read the Baidu web page that has more information on how their spider works. I also don't know how IP addresses are distributed in China; that seems like a pretty large block to me so there may well be some addresses in that range that are not theirs. Currently I am not seeing any readable text (in any language) when I look at the page their spider tells me to read.
I could of course check my ssh logs to see what IP addresses liked to try to hack my system the most often - frequently I saw Chinese IPs those times - and compare it to the presumed range of Baidu to look for overlap. But I'm not that concerned about this right now, and most script kiddies just spend time bashing away mindlessly at common passwords for root, which aren't useful when ssh is set to not allow root login anyways (which they would know if they read my sshd banner). -
The IE market share in the PRC won't last
because Baidu, the most popular search engine over there, is working on a browser of its own which guessing by the screenshots is based on Chrom{-e, -ium}.

Wrong search
Google "Chinese ghost cities" and take a look. Strange stuff going on over there.
It's China we're talking about, you insensitive Western clod. Baidu for "Chinese ghost cities" and hopefully you'll see "better" information.

Censorship Example
For fun, go to Baidu.com and search for "Falun Gong". The site will become unresponsive and will be down for you for a few minutes and I think doing it a few more times will cause it do go down for 24 hours. I've heard that doing this while in China will not only prevent baidu.com from working, but your entire Internet connection becomes inoperable.

Re:As always...
Microsoft has been changing a lot in the recent years and they're doing lots of interesting stuff. They're also been really successful with Windows 7, Xbox 360 and many other products. I just wish open source guys would move on from the 90's already.

Re:One serious question: Why?
To understand this one must first understand Baidu (the top Chinese search engine)'s business model.
For a specific search term, the top results shown in Baidu search are paid for, which means the websites in question pay Baidu for prioritizing their sites and every time a user clicks the result (this may sound 'innovative' at first but I assure you it does more harm than good, considering putting names of random diseases in Baidu these days results in a full page of dodgy websites offering expensive (yet often ineffective) treatment courses).
To increase revenue, Baidu encourages equally dodgy 'vendors' to lead users into clicking these links by giving a small kick-back for each successful hit. The whole thing sounds like borderline fraud to me but hell somehow it's legal.
The trojan, HongTouTou (or 'Phantom Clicker'), is the result of such business model as a certain vendor tries to profit by creating artificial traffic.
This an actual URL generated by the malware: http://wap.baidu.com/s?word=%E8%9D%8E%E5%AD%90&vit=uni&from=963a_w1 (don't click or you'll be generating revenue for them.)
Notice the 'from' parameter, 963a_w1 being the vendor ID.
An in-depth analysis can be found here:

Oh, Chinese language knowledge required. -
Re:It's spamming Google Trends / Suggest / Instant
Yeah search master? You sure it's not using Baidu?
From the source..
After few http requests sent back and forth, it gets a URL to connect in the background (in this case analyzed): http://wap.baidu.com/s?word=%E7%83%A8%E4%B9%8B%E5%9B%BD%E5%BA%A6&vit=uni&from=961a_w1

Re:Maybe:
Baidu Search is not censored, so you can search for "liu Xiaobo" "nobel peace prize" without problem,
The only thing you can find there, is one canned response from Chinese government.
http://www.baidu.com/s?wd=%C1%F5%CF%FE%B2%A8
Other results are about different Liu Xiaobo - it's a very common name in China.
Google has done the right thing, it's better to display nothing, than to display the only thing approved by the authority.

Re:To use a Fark meme
Here's an innovation.
I wonder if this link will work :
that's the world trade centres in Beijing.
If that doesn't work go to http://maps.baidu.com/ search for beijing '', and the click the '3D' button ().
Amazing.

OMG BAIDU Porn!
I see a bunch of naked men on Baidu! So, that's what the whole pornography ban in China was all about! They're trying to assault our heterosexual christian american values!
Clearly, Baidu needs to be banned in China as well! Go get them, great leader!

Re:As compared to what?
The google translation is reasonably clear, and the last bullet point provides for what you are talking about:
Any unit or individual that Baidu search through links to third-party Web page content may be suspected of infringing the right of communication of their information network should be promptly notified to the rights of Baidu in writing and provide proof of identity, ownership and detailed proof to prove infringement. Baidu after receipt of the above legal documents, will be broken as soon as possible according to the law related links content. For details, see specific channel of the copyright statement.

for THIS, I'll boycott all US products 2010-2012
ok, because of Bush I boycotted ALL US originating products & US companies 2003-2009, but ONLY until Obama was elected.
Just my humble way of responding to the environmental and war crimes shit I see on TV.
Wonder if Baidu is usable as a search engine? At least it's not supporting US war crimes.
How strange I used to be so much pro-american.

Re:Oh really?
If Google pulls out, the Chinese will still have censored search results, but from an inferior search provider.
Except that Baidu already dominates search in in China. If Google pulls out, most people won't notice. For the few Google users, they'll move to Baidu and search like everyone else.
-
Re:why should China bother?
The Chinese people need Google. Here's why:
1. Go to Baidu.com
2. Search for "falun gong"
3. Enjoy your temporary IP ban.The internet is a great danger to any dictatorship. It allows people who are secluded to see what the outside world is really like instead of the portrait that their overlords paint for them.

there is a line on the google result page that says:'In compliance to the local laws and regulations, some search results are not displayed"

Re:Germany still censored
I wish our government would do something to piss Google off so that we could have uncensored search results
You don't need that, all you need to do is build a local search engine that is more popular than Google (Baidu in China). Google just doesn't want to play by the same rules anymore, since they lost.
-
Re:Free trade of ideas, anyone?
surprise
... no body cares about Google in China. It is Baidu http://baidu.com/ who is the number 1 and controls the majority of the market. -
Re:shut it down!
You are giving too much expectation to google. It is not the most important player in the market as it is in US. the top one is baidu http://baidu.com./ In fact, I doubt if Chinese people care at all if Google really poll out of China. So much a "thread".

Re:It's finished, dummies
Bear in mind Wikipedia may not be the site of choice for users in these countries: searches on Chinese google or Baidu don't always return wikipedia at the top. The most popular search engine, Baidu, often returns results from Baidu Encyclopedia (a clone of Wikipedia, in functionality). The Baidu Baike entry for Heilongjianghttp://baike.baidu.com/view/2647.htm?fr=ala0 is much longer and more complete, and seems to have more activity than the Chinese version. Also, Wikipedia was censored for a period of time, which might have affected usage.
