Re:And people ask me why I don't use Chrome
I already had it blocked out in my custom HOSTS file (along with 1,656,592++ other KNOWN bad sites/servers/hosts-domains that serve up malicious scripts &/or malware etc.- et al).
That's the security-side of it... the other side's FASTER online websurfing (blocking adbanners & resolving hosts-domains to IP addresses of 250 of my fav. sites in it as well, which results in FAR faster resolves than calling out to a remote DNS server (which may even be compromised via redirect DNS poisoning that's been going on the past few years now)).
Between a custom HOSTS file, & using "filtering" DNS servers (that specialize in blocking out malicious script & malware serving domains + phishing/spamming ones)? I am safer, by far, than most folks are online, & FASTER too!
---
Options for "DNSBL filtered 'secured'" DNS servers:
A.) Norton DNS (198.153.192.50 and 198.153.194.50/198.153.192.40 and 198.153.194.40/198.153.192.60 and 198.153.194.60) -> http://nortondns.com/ [nortondns.com] & you can even see how it updates every few minutes vs. known malicious sites-servers, here -> http://safeweb.norton.com/buzz [norton.com] as well as get a GOOD read on how/why it works, etc.- et al, here https://dns.norton.com/dnsweb/faq.do [norton.com]
It filters vs. MANY threats online & IS UP TO DATE as is possible I'd imaging (see those links, you'll understand WHY I state that). It's part of WHY I use it as my PRIMARY DNS here...
---
B.) ScrubIT DNS (67.138.54.100 and 207.225.209.66 ) -> http://www.scrubit.com/ [scrubit.com] & here is a good read on how/why it works via its FAQ's as well -> http://www.scrubit.com/index.cfm?page=faq [scrubit.com]

& of course
C.) Open DNS (208.67.222.222 or 208.67.220.220) -> https://store.opendns.com/get/home-free [opendns.com]
---
EACH IS FREE, & WORKS vs. threats online of MANY kinds, doubtless via a form of DNSBL they use for filtering those threats out!
(E.G.-> Phishing/Spamming, Malware hosting sites/servers, Maliciously scripted hosts-domains etc./et al & more...)
* I use ALL 3 of them (mostly as "failovers" for one another, in case my primary can't resolve a host/domain name to an IP address, & w/ Norton DNS as primary)!
(I do so, in a "layered triumvirate formation" in BOTH my IP stack DNS settings in Windows (software-side), as well as in my LinkSys/CISCO router here (hardware-side))...
APK
P.S.=> Simplest principle there is, of "I can't get burned when I can't go into the malware fire", so-to-speak (and IF I were to somehow be infected? The custom HOSTS file acts as a "1 way valve" in yet ANOTHER way - the malware/exploit cannot "talk back to mama" (it's C&C server if any) either - BONUS!)...

Re:Oh come on!
Wow, I was thinking the same thing.
You're most likely a TMobile user in the USA user like me, perhaps on prepaid also, since contract members rarely bother with unattractive low-end phones thanks to subsidies.
For the record, it's a Samsung Gravity Smart (SGH-T589), running Android 2.2.2 with kernel "2.6.32.9-perfuyoung.lee@SEP-19 #1"
The phone was just $200 USD and at least they backported 2.3's Swype to it. Seeing the kernel label hint of September [2011] and having paid full price in the last quarter of 2011, I think I'll be stuck until I can justify upgrading in another 18 months. We saw a version fragmentation article months ago showing a small subset of companies that have gotten pretty bad with new release upgrades, and also that very few releasing actually give you the newest version even months after the new Android version is out. One of my friends with a pricier phone got 2.3 over the air. I've recently begun to wonder whether phones with very low free 'internal' memory even bother to download these silent updates.

Re:Physical keyboard?
My touch screen phone is my primary digital device. Period.
My computer has fallen back into niche uses like coding and writing extensively long multi-page articles.
The touch screen keyboard becomes second nature within a week of ownership. This holds true for all touch screen phones, Android, iPhone or WinPhone7.
At the end of the day, if a keyboard is so important, there are a a lot of cases that come with bluetooth keyboard. Just check this link out:

Re:Misleading to call it "non-copied"
In this case a totally false analogy.
Here is a simply business example. I want some art work a bus in front of Big Ben. They come across the original photo and dislike the framing. So now they a denied the ability to take an alternate photo and use it for the next fifty years. http://tinyurl.com/86wy5u2 well crap all london double decker buses are blue ( and look there are a bunch with buses in front of big ben, umm)
Big Ben also ain't no technicolour edifice, I'll ket you guess what colour it is. Of course what colour are the skies over London typically known for, big hint here it ain't for being clear blue.
So red double decker bus, with grey Big Ben and grey skies is a well known association used for many years by many people. So these copyright interpretation is horrific. It pretty much would force the majority of web sites on the internet to shut down until they come up with alternate layouts for their web site.
For the defence lawyer to lose this case, well, they gotta pretty much suck and the defendant should sue. All this can be demonstrated by a goggle image search, ohh look, no different on Bing http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=london+bus&qpvt=london+bus&FORM=IGRE.

Re:This again?
So, switch to other specialization. How about men and nursing?? Or how about men and kindergarden teacher??
Sorry, but if there is an issue of sexual harassment in one's workplace, maybe that needs to be addressed. It certainly is easier to get this problem addressed today for women than it is for men.
http://www.bing.com/search?q=men+kindergarden+teacher&form=OSDSRC
and first result,
I know it is 2009 and all, but I don't think men should be kindergarten teachers. They are just not patient and capable of dealing with small children.

Re:But will they abandon it
This is google we are talking about. They steal data about you and then sell it to the highest bidder. This is why I only trust bing.com when I need to search for things.

Re:Improve results
I've seen many people claim this. What, exactly, are you searching for that it doesn't come up quickly? 90% of the things I search for are answered in the first 3-4 links. The only time I even have to go to the second page is if it is an obscure and/or very specific piece of information that I'm looking for. Facts are usually answered directly by Google even before the first link. Out of curiosity I did a quick comparison of searches for two facts (release date of The Darkness 2, one of the first things to spring to mind) by searching them on Google and Bing. Google knew the answer without my even visiting a link and told me what websites had the information. Bing didn't. I'd say that is pretty much a win.
For fun, I also did an Altavista search. Google is considerably better IMO.
-
Thanks, fellow AC (got ya on specifics)... apk
However - Is it as SIMPLE to edit/add/remove entries as the HOSTS file is though?
* That's LITERALLY "take out ANY text editor & have @ it" easy!
(Well, as long as you understand IP addresses - to - host-domain name equations (& most HOSTS have examples of entries, edits, & what-not in them by default (Microsoft ones do @ least))).
APK
P.S.=> To each his own & whatever works... me? I pretty much use it "all" as far as "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" here, per this guide's points:

Easy way around that -> The "inuse" reskit tool:
http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22InUse%22+and+%22reskit%22&go=&qs=ns&form=QBRE
OR
By doing a rename of the file in use & copying in a NEW one (the latter doesn't always work, especially with executables which page BACK TO THEMSELVES (which is WHY you still see "paging" operations even IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PAGING FILE))
APK

"NTFS is a very stable and secure filesystem." - by man_of_mr_e (217855) on Sunday January 01, @01:59PM (#38557510)
I'm with you that NTFS is a great filesystem: It is, but? I didn't KNOW you could delete files that are locked by other apps (especially for example/again - libraries OR again, exe's paging back into themselves on disk) in an inode filesystem - "live & learn", not a wasted day! apk

Don't use IE then, or secure your rig!
ANDROID though? Face it - Linux based or not, it's being exploited... & thus, it's NOT secure, & the other 86++ or so security issues I posted on ANDROID show that much... kernel level or not, the problems in security ARE there and yes, serious ones (money is the biggest)!
Plus, IE BHO's are easy to take out (browser helper objects) from IE's options (IE9 even recommends you disable some for more speed when you start it up, which allows a user to IMMEDIATELY investigate what's up there).

They start out free. Then they start charging.
Google once offered access to their search engine via a SOAP API. That disappeared years ago. Then they offered more limited access with the "Google Web Search API", which came with an obfusicated interface, a restrictive EULA which permitted its use only for widgets on a web page, and is now closed to new users. Now they have the Custom Search API, where you get only 100 queries a day before you have to pay.
Yahoo used to have a Yahoo Search API, which was free. Then they had the Yahoo BOSS API, which was also free. Now they only have a pay API.
Bing's search API remains free, but you have to sign up with Bing first, and Microsoft reserves the right to start charging.

LMAO - it's FAR from "lame" & FINALLY? Microsoft's even going to put a variation of what I've been doing since around 1995 or so on Windows NT-based OS into Windows 8 (tuning for performance, & part of it's trimming off services you don't REALLY need!) - shut off services that aren't needed (they will do this in Windows 8, "automagically" without user intervention!).
MS knows it lessens CPU cycle usage, memory, & other forms of I/O (mainly in the scheduler, avoiding "process churn")... it works!
Yes - it's done MORE for performance' sake actually (saving RAM, CPU cycles, & other forms of I/O spent on services you DON'T REALLY NEED TO RUN (this varies by users' requirements), however - cutting off potentially vulnerable services can function for security also!

Re:Blowing away your points (point-by-point)
How'd I "depend on Linux" though? I wasn't solely using a firewalling router alone for security, per MOST of ALL of what I do, listed here that uses "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" -> http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP%22&go=&qs=ns&form=QBLH
Linux also doesn't run "every firewalling router" under the sun out there... though it's useful there too (saves the oem costs too by using a "freebie" core OS for them, I'll give it that... which leads to my next point of course!)
You can post ALL THE STATS YOU LIKE about Linux usership/marketshare, but, it's common-knowledge that on PC's &/or Servers COMBINED, Windows "rules the roost" with almost 95% of the market!
Painful FACT is, where Linux does get used the most, is that it is NO COST - This is the ONLY reason it's used by so many websites (like any business, they often have to 'pinch pennies' in order to remain profitable & competitive... especially "smallish 'mom & pop shop'" type sites).
* Funniest part is how you're trying to "tell me how the internet works", & buddy? I strongly wager I was writing code + networking systems onto the net while you were still in diapers quite possibly (e.g. -> During the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 professionally for BellSouth, & all thru the 1980's whilst I was in academia using timesharing terminals from midranges &/or mainframes on *NIX systems + VAX machines!)

Runaway1956 - I do BOTH (& FAR more)
A.) Blocking @ the HOSTS file layer (tcpip.sys)
B.) Software Firewall layer (ipnat.sys)
C.) HARDWARE ROUTER FIREWALL Layer (LinkSys-CISCO tech model here, but I have lists in my firewall, gui driven (pretty easy/easier than
.conf file edits - but, to each his own))...D.) I also combine in things/layer in defenses like:
a. Opera's URLFILTER.INI file
b. FireFox's own native blocklist (plus adblock & noscript)
c. IE's Restricted Zones + TPL's (IE9 only) too!* Why do I do that @ so many levels of defense for online security (& MORE per these guides I've authored since 1997 for online security & speed -> http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP%22&go=&qs=ns&form=QBLH )?
SIMPLE: The concept of "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" - the BEST THING WE HAVE CURRENTLY GOING in computer security!
APK
-
You'd laugh @ LAYERS of defense I use then
URLFILTER.INI - Yes, Opera has that (correct) & yes, that's a way, & one I use too (combined w/ others like it + my own HOSTS file + DNSBL data I use too imported into those (same with TPL's for IE9) albeit, duplicates removed of course)
However - HERE's ONLY PART OF THE REST OF WHAT I DO FOR SECURITY ONLINE!
(Again - this is ONLY PART mind you, there's a LOT more in the URL's below this one next)
http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2579684&cid=38412576
Which ought to make you laugh because of your viewpoint - more minimalist than my own (which is why I omit using proxy servers setups here or DNS servers setups here (powerbill mainly)
Yes, YOU may laugh... especially because you seem more "mimalist" than I, (seeing what's in my 'p.s.' @ the bottom especially):
* Plus, & don't laugh? LOL, I do all that, & FAR MORE, for 2 reasons - more speed, & more security, online... & it works.
The rest of how I secure an OS is here (guide you might wish to look @ sometime, get a few ideas (or not, you may know it all there for all I know)):
http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP%22&go=&qs=bs&form=QBLH
APK
P.S.=> WHY would I do all that? Seems to work's why & for decades now here + for friends of mine I've secured up this way...
All by a simple concept that seems to work & is the BEST THING WE HAVE GOING FOR SECURITY ONLINE TODAY:
"Layered-Security"/"Defense-In-Depth"... apk
-
AdBlock 4 Opera exists (I use HOSTS & more)
There is an AdBlock addon 4 Opera too -> http://www.bing.com/search?q=AdBlock+for+Opera&go=&qs=bs&form=QBLH )
Plus? Well:
You can even Right-Click on pages & select "Block Content" & that can "do the job" easily enough on adbanners & more on ANY page...
However, Opera has PLENTY of BUILT-IN NATIVE OPTIONS for control of things in its GLOBAL & OVERRIDE/BY SITE menu options for what you mention:
1.) Tools Menu
2.) Preferences
3.) General tab has "popup control" (a source of malware sometimes)
4.) Advanced tab has
a.) Cookies
b.) Plugins
c.) Security (security protocols like BETTER THAN TLS 1.x)
d.) Certificates control
e.) Trusted Website mgt.
f.) Master Password controls( & more)
5.) Network section has
a.) Proxy control
b.) Network referrer control
c.) Geolocation control( & more)
6.) MOST IMPORTANTLY vs. Javascript &/or Plugins?
Opera's CONTENT TAB controls java, javascript, plugins (only on demand setting too optional), style options (where you can use your own PROTECTIVE css filters even, which I do, alongside HOSTS &/or PAC files).
Pretty much ALL YOU NEED to stop yourself from being bombarded by ads, OR WORSE, being infested/infected by malware thru them!
* OPERA ROCKS - & only just got better in 64-bit, & right in time for Christmas too...
APK
P.S.=> Nicest part is, it has an overrides section where you can MAKE EXCEPTIONS, by site (in bysite preferences of the same area above)...

Plus, pretty much everyone here knows who I am (been around here since 2003-2004) by this timeframe... many of the "penguins" around here can't stand me because I use documented undeniable current information, like in the 1st post of mine here you replied to!
(However, I imagine the slashdot editors & owners just LOVE me, because controversy generates pageviews, which I pretty much always "generate" here by using facts Penguins can't deny w/out their std. effete retaliatory trolling off topic illogical adhominem based attacks they have to resort to when they cannot disprove the facts I use, does that much, easily!)
Also, as far as registering?
Hey - I honestly don't feel I actually gain anything by having a "registered 'luser'" account here really!

I've been writing guides for that since 1997 in fact, & yes, they CAN & DO actually work (e.g.-> I haven't been "hit" by a malware since 1996, & because of what's in the guide - in fact, I WROTE IT because of that (really PISSED ME OFF is why, & when that happens, with anything? Also, neither have my friends, family, or paying customers that apply + follow its principles.
To "immunize" a Windows system, I effectively use the principles in "layered security" possibles!

Re:Nobody said "LINUX SHOULD DIE" etc.
has less drivers of high quality (makes sense, PC makers & parts makers KNOW what drives the PC world is why)
Granted. Linux has drivers for a bunch of other platforms Windows has never touched, though, obviously.
NOW - Thing is?
Well - Neither DELL nor HP is doing that... lol! Show me where they said they are "locking out Linux" (especially intentionally), ok??
1) They're obviously never going to admit to doing it, regardless of whether they are or not.
2) The people the guy talked to were not really in a position to be knowledgeable about this stuff, from the sounds of it.
3) The general consensus from the posts here is that article author is hardly an unbiased, reliable source himself. Quite the opposite. That ALL said & aside:
Linux folks asking vendors TURN OFF a VALUABLE & EFFECTIVE security measure, especially for layered security
Yeah, why would Linux want to turn off a "VALUABLE & EFFECTIVE security measure" that prevents it categorically from being booted? Linux people have no problem with the security itself, just that Linux is probably going to be "coincidentally" left out in the cold by it.
It really sounds like a terrible idea to begin with. If they won't give customers the keys to sign the stuff with (which seems to be the whole point of the system in the first place), either 1) Linux booting is disallowed, or 2) they make the secure boot disable-able, which completely defeats the whole purpose of it to begin with if all anybody has to do to bypass it is toggle an option in the BIOS (well, I suppose you could lock down your BIOS so maybe not). Sure, it's great if all you care about is running Windows...at least until a bug creeps in and Windows accidentally its own signature...or the first h/cr/acker figures out how to invalidate the signature...(which I am QUITE expert on, see here http://www.google.com/search?sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&site=&source=hp&q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000/XP%22&btnG=Search&gbv=1&ei=UA-zTsH5GqrX0QGV8L3TBA , OR here http://www.bing.com/search?q=HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP&go=&qs=ns&form=QBLH
... I practically "wrote the book" on how to do that & have since 1997... )Well, you wrote *a* book. Damn, dude: nobody's ever going to accuse you of being terse! As for being an expert, I guess I'll just have to take your word on that one.
Why don't they adapt for it? Nobody's stopping them!
Um, yeah, that's kind of the point...
Perhaps they are unable to??
They may eventually, yeah, but it'll suck in the short term if it goes the way it looks like it's going to.
Again - I didn't see vendors STATE they were locking out Linux! Show me where they have... ok?
See above.
APK
P.S.=> As far as "hack Windows", & it being done by Penguins? Yes, I said it - what BETTER WAY for they to discredit MS!
Yay stereotyping. Like I said, this is about being able to boot Linux, period. Yes, there are some people who may use that ability maliciously, but there's also a hell of a lot of people who don't.
& judging by the "anti-microsoft/anti-windows" sentiments around here
Okay, yes, I'll give you that one. Diversity of opinions and plenty of people on both sides, etc., etc....but yeah.
Yea, I'll stand by it.
Yes - I'm fairly sure that "goes on" from the "penguins" even here too
-
Nobody said "LINUX SHOULD DIE" etc.
I only pointed out that Linux isn't "adapting to change"& from the article, it seems they insinuated Windows is "locking them out" - that wouldn't be MS doing it, it's be said vendors (the 2 big ones in DELL & HP Mr. Bott spoke to).
I used Linux (KUbuntu 10.10 & patches) for MOST of 2010 in fact, & certainly ALL thru the summer... a patch blew it up on me, of all things, & I can safely say "it's not windows, not by a longshot & not in a good way"... it's less versatile, has less drivers of high quality (makes sense, PC makers & parts makers KNOW what drives the PC world is why), less high quality & less used wares on it, less games (big home market thing) etc. & more! In fact, I've used various Linux distros since 1994 (Slackware 1.02 being my 1st - yes, I look at "how the other 1/2 lives" to learn & grow!)
NOW - Thing is?
Well - Neither DELL nor HP is doing that... lol! Show me where they said they are "locking out Linux" (especially intentionally), ok??
* BOTTOM-LINE: Today, out there now? The security/hacker-cracker problem's gone NUTS... how do I know, & especially since 2004? Well, I've been populating a custom HOSTS file since 1997, & the "jump" in bad hosts/domains has shot way, Way, WAY UP since then... especially the past 2 yrs.!
That ALL said & aside:
Linux folks asking vendors TURN OFF a VALUABLE & EFFECTIVE security measure, especially for layered security (which I am QUITE expert on, see here http://www.google.com/search?sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&site=&source=hp&q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000/XP%22&btnG=Search&gbv=1&ei=UA-zTsH5GqrX0QGV8L3TBA , OR here http://www.bing.com/search?q=HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP&go=&qs=ns&form=QBLH
... I practically "wrote the book" on how to do that & have since 1997... )?VERY DUMB!
( & that's what Linux folks are basically asking for in today's "World-of-Malware-In-General Exploits" & those exploits? They're becoming FAR more dangerous, more rootkit tech (especially combined bootsect/driver ones), even dedicated partitions work if not hacking BIOS from various vendors & more!)
Why don't they adapt for it? Nobody's stopping them! Perhaps they are unable to?? Again - I didn't see vendors STATE they were locking out Linux! Show me where they have... ok?
* Lastly & by the way? I'll post in the style I like, and IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT? DON'T READ IT!
APK
P.S.=> As far as "hack Windows", & it being done by Penguins? Yes, I said it - what BETTER WAY for they to discredit MS!
Better than "FUD" is, & being caught in it, like Mr. Bott has done... good for him, about time they did in bigtime journalism in this field!
See - put it this way:
I personally know Linux folks that do it in fact OR try to, we converse on it @ times... & judging by the "anti-microsoft/anti-windows" sentiments around here (which EVERYONE here knows about worldwide no doubt, lol)??
Yea, I'll stand by it.
Yes - I'm fairly sure that "goes on" from the "penguins" even here too IF they have time & are inclined to do so... but, what they do NOT understand is, that ONLY MAKES WINDOWS STRONGER!
I.E./E.G.-> MS patches consistently, 2nd week of every month, when these things are found & IF it is quickly + reliably patchable, especially REMOTELY EXPLOITABLE ONES (which Linux is behind in/has more of, mind you)...
Heck, the 2 MS has NOT patched? EASILY WORKED AROUND! I even posted that much here as to how to go about it easily enough via workarounds, how/when/where/why ->

There's NO DENYING the current data I put up
Regarding Linux & it's "fine security" (not - ESPECIALLY ANDROID (a linux variant)), here http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2504516&cid=37914046 that's VERY CURRENT on all points I posted (of sites running linux being cracked into, including ironically enough LINUX.COM &/or KERNEL.ORG as well, amongst others... including the extremely recently breached CA's too!)

Try 40-50 different things, & over 40 of them over time online... Plus, I haven't even shown you them all, only a tiny partial list of some "favs" of mine.
I've also done 30 "enterprise class" information systems, apps that help doctors diagnose eye conditions, & far more professionally as a coder too circa 1995-presently.
