Re:What I'd Like to Know
I did mention it: Apple uses HFS+, which is open source.
Apple provides read-only HFS+ drivers for Windows XP, Vista and 7 with boot camp (you can install these drivers using the Mac system's install DVD from within windows.
There are just few projects that have bothered to write a driver for it, since it is almost unheard of to use HFS+ outside of a Mac environment (and then you usually just get around it by sharing the Mac drive via SMB or NFS or something).
There are commercial tools that have built in HFS+ support though that run on Windows and other OSes, but there's nothing stopping a totally open project from including HFS+ support.
In fact, it has been done already:

Re:So this is justice in America
Are you intending to argue that listening to music that was produced by someone else (at a cost to the producer) is an inherent natural right of human beings and therefore downloading it (without compensation to the producer) constitutes no moral or ethical injustice?
Yes. That basically sums up my opinion.
Real injustice is to restrict the poor from experiencing all the culture ever produced even though it is both technically and economically (the poor can afford to pay for the copying himself by using file sharing) possible. Of course, we don't want the creators to not get paid anything for their work, but keeping a pay per copy system is simply unproductive in a world where we can make copies so easily. It is nothing more than destructive luddite behavior.
If you're a programmer, have any juicy source code for me to look at?
You can take a look at a couple of the plugins written for the SRS program of anki. I have written this program that help you to memorize go games. But I really don't feel like spending time uploading the source code to it right now unless there is some real demand for it. There is also this program (includes sourcecode) which I use to track tv episodes I have watched. It is a really outdated version so don't expect it to work for updating against the internet. But I did provide the source code so you can work it from there. I simply just picked something that was easily on my home page account.
As for source code produced for companies I work for. I won't share that here. Not because I care personally. I would gladly share it. But I could get in some real trouble for it, and while I do believe in civil disobedience, you have to weigh risk and reward.
Also, I don't really see the point of this exercise. File sharing is about copying information that has already been put out to the public and without wasting time or resources from the original creator. That is basically the opposite of me publishing never before published code (the second link) and spending time doing so.

Re:Brown?
I guess it's for all those Microsoft customers who wear brown suits and brown shoes.
Yes, I can see it now -
Sweden
I reside in Stockholm, Sweden and get about 13/1 Mbit from my provider (Bredbandsbolaget - litteraly the Broadband Company) thru DSL. It's not from the Landline-operator (Telia). I pay 399 sek, which is roughly $50 including VAT. There are cheaper operators, but I like the fact that I don't have DHCP. Prices go down to about 299 SEK ($40). I don't really know anyone surfing with less than 8Mbit either... 0,5Mbit isn't very popular here... It's dirt cheap though, $20. Much of the progress Sweden has seen in pricing and speed has been due to the goverment giving subsidies for building in rural areas and because Bredbandsbolaget seemed to make it their business to give everyone 10Mbit (this was about 6-7 years ago) thru Ethernet. A year ago they upped all their customers (Ethernet-customers) to 100/10... Thanks!

Made a java server a year ago
I made a J2ME http server a year ago.. just to test if it worked.
It can't do much though, only show one page with some info on the phone.

Re:Good Candidate for Safety Czar
hahahahaha!
It's about time the Steve Ballmer chair throwing /. cliche was replaced. And just in the nick of time, the emperor goes and saves us from tedious repetition.
Everyone pull together, if you find yourself writing "Steve Ballmer leaned towards the chair, hefted it and....", replace it with "Dick Cheney cocked his shotgun, downed a couple of beers and...."
We can make this cliche work. -
Re:1.5 million paying customers?
Let me start by disclosing that all I know about WoW is from the articles I read, and that leeroy video I saw (pretty funny, I guess). So, I'm a total n00b, or whatever.
I have a question: Doesn't WoW allow player vs. player combat? When you see a drone player running around killing the same bunny over and over, can't you just kill him? Wouldn't this solve the farmer problem? It seems like it would be a good self-regulation method. Groups of "Regulators" could form and run around the world finding and killing the farmers. Their reward would be the gold or experience the farmer has gained. -
Already in Sweden
Bredbandsbolaget in Sweden has offered 100 MBit connections for some time. The price works out to about $75 USD per month.
-
That's what I'm getting _today_.Well, not really. But I could be getting it if I wasn't too cheap.
100 MBit Internet access (both ways) is offered to apartment owners in a number of Swedish towns. This costs about 76 USD a month.
As I said before, I'm too cheap to pay for that, so I'm paying for a throttled version (10 MBit/s) of the same service putting me back about 40 USD a month.
The service has been offered for quite a few years by a company called Bredbandsbolaget. (The site is in a strange foreign language though. Be warned.)

"1, 2, 3, 14 ?! What the hell is going through your head Bono?"
Here are a few ideas.
This is probably the correct one.
"Bono said on Jo Whileys BBC Radio 1 Show that he didnt realise that it meant 14-he thought it meant 4 and that there may have been some alcohol involved at the time!" -
Thought owner?
I, for one, welcome our new thought master.

Re:hmm...
I'm using Bredbandsbolagets fibre connection. 10Mbit full duplex for about $55/month. 100Mbit is also availible for about $95/month, but it is limited to 300gb traffic each month, so I don't want it.
Still doesn't feel like its enough though. I want that Japanese shit. -
Mine from Space.com are of even higher quality

pragmatic copyleft
as a photographer, and as someone who in one way or another will try to make a living of his sense of esthetic, i've been thinking about schemes to incorporate my anarchist views with my desire to be able to, well, eat and have somewhere to sleep.
in the anarchist society (in the far off future), results of ones work (intellectual as well as manual) is available to those who want it.
today, living in a parasitic capitalist society, short of four-finger-discount it's hard to make a living if you give your work away.
so anyway, the scheme i've come up with is to copyleft work for all purposes except commercial. that is, anyone can use my images as long as i am credited and they are not making a profit in any way from using them.
but to make a living of of this, one has to charge enough to cover costs, and make an overhead.
as one poster suggested, having multiple schemes available is one solution; unlimited rights to the images, but a heap of money for the setup, or charge hefty amounts per image copy. or something else.
it's all about being pragmatic as a photographer. someone has to make it worth your wile to pack your stuff, go to a wedding, setup, shoot, eat some cake, develop, copy, deliver.
if u feel that images taken by the guests are good enough, don't hire a photographer. if u want professional photos, pay up and make sure both parties agree on the conditions.
i for one never give my negatives away, but i guess i'm coming from a different place than a wedding photographer.
if you have mainly worked with magazines (as i), you get used to being fucked over with a broom by every editor trying to get you to sign away all your rights for eternity (not kidding), for use anywhere in the universe (still not kidding - it's an actual quote), and in a situation like that i either keep my rights, or don't sign.
in a situation like that, copyright actually is the less of two evils - either restrict access to your intellectual property (sic) or become a wage slave and make it harder for others to fight for their rights (insofar as having a job preference is a right, anyway).

What country? Material in swedish available...
Although I understand you've chosen to not state your country for probably good purposes, I might have country specific material and/or links and/or people to connect you to. Just e-mail me (tord/dot/jansson/at/swipnet/dot/se) and I'll see what I can do.
However, if you are from Sweden, Norway, Denmark or Finland and therefore have a good chance of understanding Swedish (or at least knowing somebody who does) you might find this link interesting.
It's the homepage of my webzine called "Patentnytt" where I provide abstracts of and links to articles and material that is useful for anyone working against patents on software.
I have somewhat of a suspicion of who you are and that you already have mailed me though ;)
