Picturing Ballmer in Lars' place is damn funny ~~ For those who are thinking I must be on drugs. -
Re:Weird Al vs MC Lars
Lars... yah, what an asshat. I used to be a big metalica fan, then the whole mess with napster and live recordings and etc... I lost all respect for them as a band, they're trying to get rid of everything that initially 'made' them as a band. F'that.
Napster BAD! (as if you haven't seen it)
I can understand that artists want to get the money for the work they're doing... I respect that. Hell, I've even mailed artists money in the mail when I've downloaded songs I really liked (prior to itunes mostly) and I've had some good responses back from them doing that and some interesting t-shirts and signed stuff too I might add. Shrug, the whole drm, screw our fans, etc... it just gets on my nerves.
In the end the fans aren't the only ones hurt the bands are too. -

Re:Backed by John Conyers
How can he not realize that if you outlaw devices except those that follow instructions from content owners, you've effectively eliminated any use except those they decide to give you -- fair or not?
A prime example, one I demonstrate to my friends regularly, is the DVD format. Obviously there's the whole "region" crap, but even beyond that, there's a flag the "content creators" can set to mark a specific "chapter" as "unskippable".
This flag was created specifically so the creators can add the FBI warning (you know, that notice that incorrectly informs you that you'll face criminal charges if you attempt to copy the content, even though realistically it would wind up a civil case). Now days I find this flag also used to force the viewer to watch previews of upcoming DVD releases, or other advertising material.
So, not only are they lying about their rights and how they are enforced, they are now using this flag to require you to view whatever content they feel you should see -- often for their own profit.
Of course the DVD player manufacturers comply with the content industry's wishes, because hell, they are the only ones who can license the ability to decode DVDs (legally) in the first place. So bottom line is, you're forced to watch a bogus warning that attempts to scare you out of copying, as well as some previews and whatever else the content producers feel you should be forced to watch, even on a DVD you purchased.
To quote the grandparent: "many - many - artists have come directly to me saying that piracy is threatening their ability to make a living."
This reminds me of a couple of things. First, the Napster, Bad! videos published by CampChaos a few years ago. Also, somewhat more recently, South Park did their bit to put this into perspective.
The fact is this: most artists make very little from album sales; the labels rake in most of that revenue. Artists tend to make most of their living from concert tickets, T-Shirts, etc... Sure, by downloading an album you may take a tiny bit from the artist, but you're certainly not breaking them. Album sales make an artist known (via radio play etc) but touring & merchandise is where the artist actually makes most of their revenue. The label should be compensated to some extent of course (usually the label fronts the cash to spot the talent, record & release the album, and to publicise the result via radio or MTV)... but even with piracy in its current state the label makes out big time, while the artist barely breaks even repaying the label...
These are of course just my opinions, so I should just post anon... -

Re:This is sick
I remember back in the day, when there was a boycott on tuna. Now, it was my understanding that boycotts actually do something to indicate that consumers want a change in the moral practices of a business.
Now, considering what we know of boycotts, it would lead me to believe that saying "fsck you, RIAA!" and downloading music illegally is exactly the wrong thing to do if we want to bring down the RIAA, or get them to change their ways, e.g. price fixing, promoting crap music, etc. If the RIAA promotes crap music, why are you downloading it illegally and listening to it? Quit supporting the RIAA by doing without the music that is backed by the RIAA. Quit going to RIAA-backed concerts, quit buying RIAA-backed CDs, and quit downloading RIAA-backed music! Just like people did without their tuna in the '80s, you can suck it up and do without your Metallica. It is not unreasonable to expect the masses to get pissed and start demonstrating a little activism. -
Whatever happened to boycotts?

Re:Wow, just like slashdot.
I think this comment misses Bruce's point.
Maybe so. I certainly couldn't detect a point in there- he just likes to bash on nuclear power, and the article was a fine target.
and that Lovelock offers no practical solution to actually make any of this happen
Wha? Sterling is the one who has no inkling of a concrete solution. Lovelock at least gives a partial solution- Bruce does nothing but attempt to knock it down with invalid objections.
Sterling: Do you have the clout to give us one of those
Of course no one human has the "clout" to accomplish anything like realigning the international economic/industrial system. Lovelock isn't Superman. All any individual can do is share his views and try to convince others of the same.
Lovelock believes that nuclear power is the only energy source that can come close to replacing petrofuel, and he's honestly saying so. But Sterling comes along and yells "No! Nukes bad Nukes BAD!"- how does that help anything?
And then, at the end of the piece: ... what we need is genuine industrial policy agreed on by the powers-that be. A new Kyoto, genuine international agreement with coherent steps to deal with the menace.
So what he essentially says is "We need somebody to solve this problem". Uh, duh... can you say "Content-free platitude"? Of course we need a solution, and somebody will have to figure it out. That doesn't mean that anyone who isn't the president of an industrialized state is forbidden to talk about it.
The only way we'll get a "genuine international agreement" is if the people of earth start to care about solving it- and while Lovelock has tried to advance the debate, Sterling is the one knocking him down with a pessimistic attitude: "You can't do everything, so why do anything?" -

Lars interview
Readers may recall this interview with Metallica's Lars Ulrich.
I always preferred this interview
-
Re:Apologies?
You know, I would have said the same thing, but I just read the linked interview (I had no idea that took place) and my opinion has changed a bit. Back in the day (around or just before the interview) they said a lot of things, but only choice quotes gained a lot of attention.
After reading the interview (which is surprisingly unedited, even for /., but I rather enjoyed it that way), I realize that some of what they said was due to lack of knowledge/experience, and some was simply taken out of context. Lars even admits to changing his opinions on a couple issues, and he does make a few good points...
I still enjoy the Camp Chaos Cartoons on the subject though ;) -
Others may recall...

Assorted Articles, Assorted comments...
On the Metallica issue, I recall a very funny series of cartoons mocking Metallica while they were driving napster into the ground. They're still funny today, and can be found here. I mean, with this new site, could they be any more hypocritical? You can find Ulrich's testimony before congress about shutting down napster here. As I recall, he came off as whiny.
On SCO, this is a neat new idea. If enough major OSS developers start a divestment strategy against SCO, if nothing else they'll be ostracized and dead sure to fall when their lawsuits start going downhill. These sort of tactics could make the OSS community a force to be reconed with in buisness as well as technical circles, and maintaining the goodwill of the OSS community more important.
On ice cream and liquid nitrogen, i have no idea what to say because the site is /.tted to hell but Sounds Yummy.

What's Next? Action Figures?
Thank you Metallica for confirming the recent confusion over your loyalties: fans or $$$?
Clearly, it's the latter.
I'm now waiting to see the Lars Urlich action figure, with its face in a permanent scowl, and its two fists raised high clutching wads of cash, and flipping twin birds.
James will be a mongoloid neanderthal with a vacant expression, and drool hanging from its mouth. And a ferrarri.
If there's a Cliff Burton doll, it should come in a casket that spins under a mock grave, to show how he would feel about all this.
Camp Chaos anyone? -
bad idea to get a tiered accountWhy do these morons get accounts that charge extra for extra bandwidth? When I bought rack space for my server I specified "if my site gets a lot of traffic, you can just slow everybody down, not charge me money", so I'm only allocated 256Kb/s. I can't get crushed by a $3000 ISP bill.
Hell, I'd host the crap if they'd make it work when javascript is disabled in the browser.
As for Ninjai, it was way better than this Broken Saints thing. Broken Saints manages to discard the big advantage of a graphic novel (ability to read at your own pace and/or dwell on an image) and completely avoid the big draw of flash (animation; zooming/panning and fade in/out don't count as animation).
Of course, I've only seen some of the first episode, so maybe the technique gets better later on.
I think Camp Chaos's Bounty Girl (warning, cheesecake) is the best implementation of a graphic novel in flash I've seen.

Making examples out of people..
Sounds like they're about to make some examples out of people. Seriously, kids, you're not going to get out of this one with a note from your mum.
Anyway, there is some footage of the raids taking place here metallicops -
Similar IssueOn the StoneTrek site, there's a piece concerning the distribution of these extraordinarily well done hybrid (Flintstones-Star Trek) cartoons. Music was one particular sticking point, as portions of both themes play in the episodes. Assuming a less restrictive copyright code (both shows are over 30 years old, right?) and a better spirit of cooperation between enterprises (not including the ship, no pun intended, either) it's a heck of a smooth effort and very entertaining, but will not see the light of day on TV or commercial distribution.
Oh, you can find StoneTrek here, to save some bandwidth on the home site.

Spumco ruled the net...One word: Spumco.
Spumco Studios did more for Flash as art form than anyone. "Weekend Pussy Hunt," "The Goddamn George Liquor Show"...great fsckn stuff. Only people in their league was Camp Chaos, famous for "Napster Bad!" and "This Thing Of Ours" which was The Sopranos before The Sopranos were The Sopranos. I think they're still around: http://www.campchaos.com/
Spumco now have the happy situation of being busy with two different projects, "The Ripping Friends" and the revival of "The Ren & Stimpy Show" so they can't really spend much more time doing online cartoons anymore. Their website isn't even up anymore, alas. But the prospect of more Ren & Stimpy episodes and more Ripping Friends episodes makes their web silence bearable.
Spumco contributed a lot of ideas to Macromedia during the evolution of the Flash product. Whether that's a good thing or not depends on what you think about Flash. But many of the improvements in the program during its evolution are directly traceable to feedback from Spumco.
